If you swing an iron 75-80mph, which long clubs are you using to hold greens?

Great question. 

It's not as easy, or should I say intuitive, with a 3 or 4 hybrid but it can be done.  I had to learn and practice.  It's pretty much the same, though.  Weight forward, shoulders downhill, shorter knock down swing.

Ole guy in our group, he just turned 81, can do wonders with his hybrids AND woods. Beats anything I’ve ever seen.

The Gen 3 irons come in three different shapes - I don’t play the tour ones. And I typically play a Vice Pro which is marketed as high spin. 

On the shaft front, higher flex will increase club head speed which will generate more spin and get the ball higher. I run regular in my irons and hybrid and stiff in my driver.

I’ve resorted last several rounds to playing my SGI hybrid style irons. Have a set of old school blades normally in the bag normally. It’s been very wet last month or so. Mine are laced with Px 5.5 steel and I have no issues holding greens with 4-6 irons at all. 150-155 normal 7 iron for me. More I play them the more I’m enjoying playing them. After the 7 they begin to look more like more GI irons instead of SGI to my eye. The 4 has become a favorite of mine hit it every tee shot except a couple par 5s last round.

BTW, Vice pro is listed on the tests as a mid spin ball. I would try a true high spin ball like a Pro V1, Callaway Chrome Soft or Kirkland

A combination of taking my medicine and usually using the 5 hybrid and delofting it, ball further back in stance, and a short swing. It helps that my home course doesn't have many trees with low branches.

Adding to this ...... I'm older and slower now so launch and spin have both decreased. 

I just switched shafts in my 2021 T100....going from decent launch modus 105R 1/2" over into Project X Catalyst 80cw 5.5 ssx1 1/2" over and I'm seeing marked height with 24* T100 4 iron of about 12-15ft .....also 5 iron too.....6 iron down was good already.....because of my lowish launch and spin conditions,  my next club is a tsi2 4hy and then a stealth plus 5wd lofted down to 17* acting as a 4wd.....I only play courses sub 6200yd so really don't have many shots over 6 iron into the green . Also the 2021 ProV1 has perfect launch and spin with good feel vs other balls so that's taken into account.

My course is tight with 100 year old oak trees jammed down almost every fairway. The punch on par 5’s with distance is pretty much a must. For me, a 19 degree hybrid played on my back foot with an abbreviated low follow through is the answer.

22* hybrid. It's original rescue midtp with soft stepped s300 shaft. I hit that just over 200. 

 

I have Apex 21's with px 6.0's. Since I don't need the 4i I'm debating on pulling all shafts and soft stepping 1x. Possibly getting a DCB 5i to replace mine. My mid iron SS is low 80's  but I can go up a few more if I really need to.

Yes! For a shorter shot ,my longest iron, 8, I can keep it plenty low, back in the stance, etc.  a bit hard to fade though, far easier to hook.  For longer shots I’ll use my driver, especially when I’m in the right trees, a burner fade.  And yes the hybrids can do that too. Just have to practice a bit.  The ball doesn’t know what club you have in your hands.

My irons now only go down to a 7-iron. A 30* hybrid takes the place of my 5-6 irons and next up is an 11-wood. Both are incredibly easy to hit high and they hold the green better than my 4-5-6 irons ever did.

 

I can’t tell you how many guys ask me about my 11-wood because I hit it so well, but they would rather top a 4-iron than put one in the bag. Try the higher lofted fairways and hybrids and don’t let ego keep you from better scores and more fun.

This is the best advice ive seen for some time
My longest iron is a #6/31*, then a H5/27.5* and a H4/24*
My woods has "weak lofts", and starts with 7W/23* (more like a 9W), my 5W has 19*
It looks strange with only 1.0* difference in static loft from my H4/24* to my 7W/23* but ball speed difference and launch gives the gap i want, and thats constant 10 meters (11 yards) all the way from 5W/19 to my 53* GAP
