I honestly don't get the appeal of these YT golfers at all. I've never once met a golfer that wanted to buy clubs because of what people like this use. I guess if you want to corner the 12-16 year old social media obsessed kids that know nothing about golf market they might be useful lol. Micah especially I don't get. He's got to be the most overrated golfer on YT by far.

Nobodies.

Reminds of the time someone posted about Richard Rawlings.

Another nobody.

Well thanks for a constructive response Red! GolfWRX is the only social media I partake in and am not in my teens or 20s. So for me it’s a bit of a head scratcher. But I also SMH when I see kids scrolling non-stop on TikTok and Insta. But I get it. They are essentially influencers and the youts are, well influenced by them! Lol

I’d honestly be more interested in what a random Korn Ferry Tour player uses since they are, well you know, a professional golfer as opposed to a social media influencer. But hey, call me old fashioned.

I believe Rick has been offered multiple deals, however, I think he has decided to remain a free agent as it adds credibility to his reviews and allows him to play whatever fits his game.

As a viewer, it's hard to believe you are getting a true review and honest opinion of a club if the guy talking about it is getting paid by the brand.

Shiels is at a different point in his career.  He has already made great money on YouTube.  I think he has even spoke to wanting to have an unbiased opinion on clubs as well.

Like it or not a lot of the manufacturers are signing YT's to equipment contracts to increase their visibility (there's a recent article in one of the golf mags).  I think maybe Crossfield started this trend but it's extended to a lot of YT's now and that's fine with me.  Signing with a manufacturer allows for better matches and access to the pros and more interesting content.  Pretty interesting to see behind the scenes at the various manufacturer's pro fitting studios.

I Googled it after reading the thread last night and watched about 30-40 min. I had previously stumbled upon a video of the kid w/the man bun and his buddy. I now know he is another “Good Good” guy. Where they randomly approached some guy at the course and challenged him to a match. Wasn’t really sure who they were, which is why I asked my initial question in this thread. Guys are decent enough players. I’d say on par with the other 20 something “golf jocks” you see regularly around the courses. Far from a pro, definitely better than your avg random golfer. I see the appeal, especially when they hang out and challenge real professional golfers. But won’t make an effort to watch any more “content”. And i get why OEMs sponsor these guys. It’s all about impressionable eyes and wallets. And these days that’s social media. Still think it’s ridiculous anyone would be influenced by what a social media personality plays that happens to be an amateur golfer. But again understand why the OEMs do it. It’s the world we live in. To each their own.

Yeah when looking last night I saw that the two that this thread is about recently left GG. Apparently quite the drama and controversy. Came across an hour long video of a middle aged man discussing the split. I logged off after 5 min of him saying a lot and nothing at the same time to watch The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

Micah can bomb the ball and has over 200K followers.  I would 100% expect manufactures to get him on board.  Berkshire is trying to get him to do long drive comps too.

He has zero chance of ever making it on Tour OR ever winning a long drive competition. Also, plenty of people hit it long and that means absolutely nothing. The reality is Micah couldn't even win a local club championship. The only reason he's signed is because of his YT sub count and that's it. Good for him though, he's living the dream.

Pardon my ignorance. But are we talking about the guys that have golf videos on YouTube? If so, were they/are they top D1 golfers or Korn Ferry/professionals or something?? Or do we now actually care what clubs YouTube amateur golfers play??? Asking for a friend.

To be fair there’s a popular section on this website showcasing far worse golfers WITB’s haha

Got some outliers though. Crossfield is sponsored by Cleveland/Srixon and he gives a lot of high praise while testing to other brands.

I always find it funny when threads like these pop up and people are mad that “content creators” get sponsored or access to Pros. If they didn’t pull numbers they wouldn’t be getting it, some of them are more entertaining with less commercials than real golf. But I digress, a lot of Tom Petty’s here.

I’m so vein I probably think this post is about me… Lol. Seriously though, I’m far from mad. Just because I find it ridiculous, doesn’t mean I’m mad or don’t get why they get deals. Celebrities have been sponsored by clothing companies for many years long before “influencers” were a thing. People are impressionable and want to be like their “heroes”. Meh

I'd also argue on a daily basis, YouTubers and influencers probably have more touch points with the audience than say their superstars. They are likely more relatable as they are normal people and they do move the needle. Youtubers are posting content almost every day to a golf brands target demographic, where the tour players are only really getting in front of people on the weekends. Mizuno grabbing Garrett and Grant was an excellent investment for the brand in the last year and now the big money deeper pocket brands want in.

Yeah, it's interesting. You look at Titleist and that brand is practically built upon the up-and-comers; the nameless, faceless, aspiring Pro, the college golfer and the serious club enthusiast. They don't really want more than 1 or 2 top names. That's not even their image. JT and Spieth are perfect for them as they're both still young. Even JT has strong ties to being a college player at Bama.

OTOH, it's hard to imagine where TaylorMade would be without their stable of top names. That's the image they're selling. Imagine TaylorMade's products without the backing of all those big names is a bit like recalling all those Nike produces that didn't catch on. Rocketballz? Really, LOL?

For instance, "twist-face" was kind of a dud for most and the new adjustable fairways with that ugly sliding weight look a lot like the old "cavity-back" Coverts. I doubt that stuff would be popular without the Pros there to push it.

Callaway has long-since been the leader in tech (somehow). Whether it's BS or not, their advanced materials, internal bracing, adjustability and AI-designed faces are all pushing boundaries (or so they claim).

Point is, all these companies have an overall "image" that appeals to a certain demographic. It's easy to see why particular YouTube content creators / influencers might do as well (or better) at conveying the brands overall appeal.

That's true, but I doubt he would say anything truly negative about Cleveland or Srixon, even if he actually felt that way about a club or ball

Yup, seeing Mikah with a TM bag on YouTube is no different than seeing Jack Harlow in a NB shirt while Googling images of him.

I don't think I've come across a more "boomer" comment on the internet lol. For what it's worth, I enjoy your takes.

You are not the only one who might be considered "old fashioned."  Count me in this fairly large group.  I understand why kids today are so enamored with Tik-Tok and Instagram.  Those do not interest me in the slightest.  I am not on FB either.  I would rather look into things to further my knowledge base, whether that is golf related, home improvement based, or knowledge based.  Different strokes I suppose.  But these youts ...... That being said, I am not too old fashioned not to watch an occasional YT golf video.  I do like watching both Micah's and Grant's videos.  I hope Micah can keep improving and earn some playing time on the Korn Ferry Tour.  On the flip side, some YT golf individuals are really not for me.  GoodGood is in that group now.  Instead of creating creative competitive content they generally resort to content which is more relatable to the Three Stooges or Jerry Lewis.  So obnoxious that I stopped watching their videos when I am looking for simple entertainment.

My only issue is he mentioned gaining 15-20 yards upon switching to TM driver-whether  true or not, kind of a slap in the face to Mizuno, and how many of his “followers bought a Mizuno driver… 🤷‍♂️. I wouldnt trust them in anything they say regarding equipment. Its good marketing for TM because eyes will be on their products.

Funny. In this thread I’m the old guy yelling at the cloud and in the JT wearing joggers threads I’m telling the guys that say he looks ridiculous in those “ladies pants” to get with the current times… so I’m the guy yelling at people to get off my lawn while wearing very stylish joggers! Its a conundrum

+1 on this. Micah is trying on mini tour and Grant is a former college player. So these guys, at least, got game.

Taylormade is increasingly sponsoring top junior golfers, e.g. as young as 9, 10 years old. If you are young, you probably consume social media and you see influencers play Taylormade. And if you compete with your fellow junior golfers, the best of them also play Taylormade. And if you turn on TV, Rory and Nelly also play Taylormade. And what are you gonna buy?

Vokey wedges after seeing Rory play them while he’s sponsored by TM!
