Hotmelt for sound??

R5Two

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I am currently experimenting with a Mizuno STG 2020 driver and I really like my results. On thing I would like to explore is adding hotmelt to dial down the high pitch sound of the head. I have high SS and it is LOUD! How would I ask a local shop to apply hotmelt to change this a little, or is that a fools errand?

@Peoples Golf send it to him. You can message him here or on instagram.

Most local shops don't nor do you want them to even attempt to mess with it. Also, make sure you make a plan for redistributing the weight once they put the hot melt in the head.

Hope this helps!

I think it's a long answer to a short question.  The answer is yes, it can help mute the sound and it does matter where you put it.  I've had good luck putting a small amount (1-1.5 grams) near the hosel and face.  If you have a good swing weight already be careful.  It doesn't take much to increase it and once it's in there---it's not coming out.

@Peoples Golf is the one I would send it to.

What's ballpark price I should be looking for if I'm trying to get this done? Contemplating going back to my stock SIM2 weight in the back and adding hotmelt. Is 4g of hotmelt too much to add?

no that's about right. But once again so many factors come into play with this question. Length, grip, head weight, shaft weight, etc.. The formula is 2g to 1 SW in the head. So just know if your driver is d3 and you just put 4g and call it a day. That could feel like Thor's hammer to you. What are you trying to achieve?

Don't quote me but I think Will is somewhere around $50 a head?

I don’t know if some of these weight ports go into the head, but my TEE EXS 220 does. I needed to get a heavier weight, and they were out so I put 4g of yarn in the head, and it sounds wildly different….. almost like the crack of a persimmon rather than a titanium face, its more muted than a Stealth .

I would be removing and adding the same amount of weight, 4 grams. Just trying to mute the sound down a little, not that it has a bad sound to begin with but I like a little more thud than crack.

I personally wouldn't remove it but instead put a heavy corded grip on if you don't already and then keep the weight in and add the 4 grams.

They should offset each other

$50 for hot melting a driver is too much in my opinion and I feel that $10 is way more reasonable....especially if you are only putting 4 grams in the head.  Also 4 grams is not going to mute the sound that much and you'd probably be better off filling the head with cotton balls if you are only going to do four grams as that would absorb much more sound than 4 grams of hotmelt will.

After searching for a while yesterday, it's strange to me that there are no hotmelt before and after videos.  Mobile Clubmaker does one with a soda can to show the principle, but doesn't demonstrate the driver.

With regards to yarn or cotton, I'd be concerned with moisture as water is pretty heavy.

I've had a few of my heads hot-melted by a local guy.  $15 for 4g.  I had him put it center-forward by the face.  Yes, it made the swing-weight go up as mentioned.  It also muted the sound a little and that is what I was looking for.  4g won't change the sound by a lot, but if you're looking for that slightly more muted than stock sound, it could be an option.

Good luck!

I do my own hotmelt and I've had mixed results on how much it alters sound. The more surface area inside the head that it covers, the more it will mute the sound. Unsurprisingly, the drivers it seems to have muted the most were ones that I added a lot of melt to. So ultimately YMMV. Might have to add a lot of melt and then change out the adjustable weights to compensate. I've had the most success with sound alteration in hybrids and fairways, I'm guessing due to there being less overall surface area to cover.

What type of polymer are you using?  What impact resistance are you looking for when selecting a hot melt adhesive?

I just use the Surebonder stuff sold by Golfworks. The gun they sell is terrible and breaks easily, but the hotmelt cartridge itself works great.

I have this hotmelt gun and highly recommend it. At $125, it is short money for those of us that like to test/change/hoard equipment! BTW, shipping from hotmelt.com is a bit high, so get a few extra glue cartridges for "down the road". I hot-melted an ST180 (god-awful loud) and it came down nicely. IIRC, I added about 8g and spread it around pretty good, then changed the weight to a lighter one to keep the MOI where I wanted it.

Incidentally, the ball made a big difference with the ST180. I originally played it before taking it to the range. With my play balls it wasn't that loud. When I went to the range, it was ear-splitting!!

Good points all around! Never though if the range ball causing louder sound but it makes sense.

I actually bought that gun as well but I'm not having as much success with it for some reason. I have trouble getting the gun to force the hot melt out of that cartridge consistently. Even after letting it heat up at the highest temperature for 30 minutes and then using a mini butane torch to heat the tip. Other than the gun breaking every few uses, I have better luck getting the melt out at a consistent, predictable volume with the golfworks kit. I've seen quite a few recommendations for this one you linked though (which is why I bought it), so apparently I'm not doing something right with it.

I trim the tip back by half because it stays too cool on the end if you leave it full length. But, don't cut it with wire cutters cause they will pinch the hole shut. I take a very thin hobby saw and score it all the way around then break it off. Heating it with a torch will also make it solidify (too much heat) and plug up. Also, use slow consistent pressure instead of squeezing hard. I went at one too hard and it leaked out the back and caused a heck of a mess. Once I started trimming the tips and using the right amount of presure, i've had zero issues with mine.

Thanks for the tips! I've got a TSR4 coming that I will be hot melting, I'll break this gun back out with these adjustments and give it another shot.

You can buy your own hotmelt gun for $55 dollars. Before I had my own I used to pay $7 a club to get the work done at a very reputable club builder and $50 for a couple grams of hotmelt is highway robbery as that work I had done would have cost me $550!  It literally takes longer for the gun to warm up than it does to do the work on a single club as all you are doing is shooting hot glue into a club head. You can't even fully squeeze the trigger to put 4 grams in a club! Even if you put it in the wrong location just warm it up with a heat gun and move it.

Correct...my driver has some 60 grams of hotmelt in it and my friends call it the "ninja driver" because it hardly makes any noise!  I have a video of the sound after I did the work, but none of the sound before I did it, that I will post. You are correct though that the bigger the club head the more hotmelt that it takes to mute it but it works out for me as I prefer high swing weight in my clubs.

I’d like to add where you place the hot melt matters with regards to sound.

a small amount between the hosel and face, slightly touching the face can mute the sound quite a bit versus in the middle of the bottom of the club. Zero effect on club performance, when talking about less than 2grams. It’s what I did with my noisy and already heavy G425 LST. Definitely took the edge off and made it sound of normal driver decibels.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but what kind of hot melt or glue stick are you using with that gun and do you mind sharing where you get it from? I assume its a kind of glue stick/hot melt that stays somewhat tacky still so it doesn’t dry, crack and rattle inside the heads?
