I've thought about these lines in relation to golf.   There's no reason I should care about golf as much as I do.  I don't even play for any real money.  My old fart league pays off in pro shop credit.  I care way too much.    And I suspect I'm not alone.  When a golfer isn't hitting it well, it can get pretty ugly.  Take a look at Justin Thomas if you don't think so.  The guy looks like he's about to heave around 90% of the time these days.

 

And in his case, I can understand it.   The man makes his living playing the game.  But why should I care?   Unfortunately, on a very sad and pathetic level, the way I am playing golf means a whole lot to me.  The way I'm hitting the ball, the scores I shoot, they really matter to me.   I am a happier person when I play well and that is totally ridiculous.  It actually goes deeper than that.  And I'm not even very good.  I'll break 80 a few times each season if I'm lucky.  

 

Yet there I am in the back yard with my whiffle golf balls just about every acceptable day trying to figure out the swing.  It's pretty sad.   I like to think that there is something about this game that can do this to people.  As opposed to just accepting that I am a demented old codger with no actual life to speak of.  There's something mystical about golf.  Something religious.  I guess, technically, that means I can't talk about it any more.
