High Hands at Impact

Ive tried for probably 20 years to get my hands back to near address position at impact but it ain’t happening. I feel like I’m swinging well and hitting it well so do I just say F it and just roll with what I got??

Kwon has measured this - the closest anyone he has measured has come to having hands and shaft back to setup is 2 inches above with driver - more typical is 5 inches.  The swing that was that closest also had kept their knees bent a lot and to get down further would have likely lead to a swing where the guy wasn't on tour but just another amateur.

dr kwon explains it here - toward the end of this video he talks about how it is practically impossible to return the shaft to setup and have a good swing .  He has a part 2 also.

Your hands are high because otherwise you'd miss the golf ball. It's how you solve the problem once you get to that point.

IMO you say F it if you’re hitting it well

This is a solid athletic move but you are really driving that right elbow in front of you. Your hands move out a lot, but it’s a combo of your backswing and driving the elbow in front than it is body rotation. Hands that far out, that early, with a steep shaft is going to contribute to what you see at impact. I like the swing though, it’s unique.

Can your hands be lower - certainly   As noted, to me, the problem is your steep shaft in transition - you have a narrow arc so that if you maintain that arc and hands work down and you rotate then likely you stick the club into the ground behind the ball - so you extend the hips and raise your torso away from the ball - this allows you  room to extend your right arm to shallow the club by widening the arc - result is the higher hands and you hit the ball.      So depends on how much you want to invest in making the change.  Potential is to gain speed and better dispersion.

Agreed with all that. Speed is not a concern as I hit it plenty far. My issue is certainly with dispersion.

Most clubs today are fitted with distance in mind. The last thing that is necessary is extra length with irons. Distance is about loft and nothing else. The reason I asked is because the distance you are away from the ball forces you to extend your arms a lot at impact. That's usually due to long and/or upright clubs. I noticed the toe of your irons sits up quite a bit and your brain knows not to dig the heel in so it compensates. If you made the swing you're apparently looking for, you'd hit it dead left.

Thanks for posting your swing.

Hands being higher than address is as it should be, not a problem.

That being said, there are some other aspects of your swing which are not exactly textbook.

As others have said, this is yet another myth that golfers get themselves mixed up in.

If you want to make your swing better, elbow gets too forward on the torso and the shaft is very vertical as a result.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

Need to fix that right arm/arm move before you hurt yourself. If anyone was a candidate for the Justin Rose drill or the AMG shallow it would be you. Check out the video in the AMG shallowing thread.

Ive watched the AMG vid and Rose’s drill but curious as to how exactly I’ll hurt myself?

You have one of the most extreme drives of the right elbow to midline of body I've seen from the top of the swing and then you throw it out at the last minute with a nearly ramrod straight right arm at impact and it's very steep into the ground. Hard on the elbow tendons etc.

Your FO impact position is better than 99.9% of ams:

2B57662A-A8EF-432A-B0F6-02BB7FF038DA.jpeg.a3989e87885523891f56177327bea141.jpeg

You said “I’m swinging well and hitting it well.”

Unless you’re unhappy with some aspect of your ballstriking or ball flight (besides what you look like in slow-mo DTL video), my advice would be to dance with the girl you brung and play golf, not golf swing.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all to learn you were a +2 to scratch player (I’m on mobile and can’t see your index, if you listed it in your profile). And if you’re not, that swing could certainly get you there.

If you MUST tinker with it, something that works for me (also 6’3”, older, 1° up, longer clubs, tendency to get steep) is to shallow AMG/Monte/JRose-style (the current huge thread) and get my hands down sooner with the feel to get them as close to my right pocket as possible while right hand feels palm-up and right wrist is bent backwards in full extension. Another feel that works for me is to focus on address hand position (in peripheral vision), and then hand path through impact (trying to bring them through the same spot relative to my feet), instead of ball focus.

Just note that if you do manage to get your hands lower and closer to you at impact, your ball flight is going to be more left and draw biased than what you’re used to, unless/until you flatten your lie angles, or rotate harder through impact with a later release (fade pattern).

Appreciate it. I do hover around scratch/+ depending on how well I’m driving the ball which is where I see my largest level of inconsistency.

And you are correct, what does it matter what it looks like on video when the majority of people who see me play generally say they’d do anything to have my swing. I just know where my “issues” are and it’s frustrating I haven’t been able to fix them.

Curious, what are your iron specs?
