Indoor Fitting

Assuming the fitter is high qualified and reputable (which he is in this case), can I trust an indoor fitting to be as accurate as an outdoor fitting without actually seeing the ball in the air?  Only by using trackman through a simulator and all the data? 

 

In other words, can I be comfortable buying a club without hitting it outside and know it is right for me based on an inside fitting?

People do it all the time but if you have doubts then you'll always doubt the results even if perfectly fit.

I wait until I can hit and test outdoors. I also like to feel the turf interaction when testing irons.

Trackman data + Visual Confirmation is key for my own OCD... 😅

Haha well you might need to have different set of irons for wet/dry/soft/hard/etc. 😛

Yes.  I have only been got for irons indoors. They have always been spot on and never had an issue. 

 

Driver on the other hand... Outdoors would be my preference. My guy has fit into drivers and they've been fine. If I had the choice I'd rather I good fitter and be done outdoors to see the flight.

A good friend is just like you. He needs to see a driver outside. My experience has been the opposite. The best driver fitting I did was inside.  I was fit somewhere else (a mistake) for irons inside.  I didn't like the turf interaction of my new clubs nearly as much as my old (soon to be) new clubs.

Yes. Fitting isn't fool proof anyway. I take any fitting (but I've only done 1 outdoor) as the starting baseline, and  I tend to focus more on feels, rather than pure numbers. Foresight tends to favor launch monitor queen set ups, and TM doesn't do as good of a job with gear effects and spin (indoors).

 

I don't get bogged down or obsessed with numbers at a fitting, because you dont use golf clubs to hit on a monitor, you use them to play golf. I always end up tweaking the set up post fit.. always.

The problem I have with outdoor fittings are the crappy range balls 

They don't fly the same as a prov..tp5.. or what have you 

All my fittings have been indoors... 

I have a indoor fitting booked for the end of the month and I plan to use my current gamer ball for the fitting

My experience has been the fitter is more important than indoor vs outdoor. I’ve had excellent iron and wood fittings indoors. Ironically the worst fitting I’ve had was outdoors for hybrid, but I am 100% confident it is because the fitter was not as good as the others I’ve had and I didn’t know enough to figure that out at the time.

I would never again get fit for irons or wedges indoors. I have to feel how an iron reacts to the turf, tight bermuda, rough, different lies. Need to see how I flight the irons as well. 

 

Same reason I can't stand warming up off mats before a round. It's just not very realistic. 

 

I do agree that reputable fitter (without an agenda) is equally, if not more important.

I'd rather an indoor fitting with my gamer ball than an outdoor fitting with range balls.  That said, the best fitting I had was at the Titleist Manchester Lane facility.  Outdoors, Trackman, Prov1 or Prov1x, and perfectly manicured grass.

The solution for the player needs to take at least the following into account:

 

launch monitor (in or out / doors) + how do they play on course + stats/strokes gained + players preference + players goals + budget

 

You probably could start anywhere in the solution, and work it in any direction.  We start with stats on our bench.

My fitter was spot on with my indoor iron fitting.  2 inches short and 2 degrees upright.   Much better approach shots in dispersion  and accuracy compared to the old Mavrik Max irons.

Driver was pretty close.  Had to decrease the loft setting two notches from max loft of 14*  But, I would have also guessed max loft based on how I was swinging that day.
