Anyone Still Own a 1-iron?

I have had an Eye2 1 iron for more than 30 years now, still have it in the bag fairly often.

PING Eye 2 

Callaway Big Bertha

Callaway X-12 Pro

TaylorMade Gapr Lo 

 

All are 16* except for the Gapr at 17* turned down to 15.5*.  All have been in the bag multiple times throughout the past few years.  And yes, these are all relatively easy to hit versions of the club. I’m just not a good ball striker to handle an actual blade 1 iron!

I think there are more bags now that have only 1 iron than have a 1-iron.

Still got a Ping Eye 1-iron, virtually  identical to this one although a 3-iron is shown. Never use it now. I wonder why? 😂

I still carry one in my holiday bag for links golf.

Titleist didn't make a 1-iron for my 680's or 710mb (or 2-iron). 

Switched to TaylorMade TP hybrids 2009

1965 MacGregor Tourney MT2 1-iron (to match my beginner's set)

Mizuno MP-33 1-iron

 

There is no reason to use a 1-iron now adays - except for nostalgia......*sigh*.

I had a cb lynx 1 iron, I traded it in for credit towards the tour edge 1 hybrid iron I bought for windy days. Where was this club on all of my windy golf rounds this year? In the spare bag in the garage.

I did have a Ping Eye 2 BeCu and Ping Zing one, but both got sold. No pictures as they're at my mum's house, however she has suggested I go round and clear them out, so let's see. Don;t really carry one any more - if I need a long iron I'll put my Vapor Fly Pro 2 iron back in.

I have this old Northwestern 1-iron, from the Hubert Green Shot Saver series. This is a St. Vincent de Paul find.

 

I still remember the first time I was able to get it up into the air, off the grass - I've never had such a clear indication that my game was getting better. But I've only ever done that on driving range grass. I don't think I dare bag it. Occasionally when I'm at the range I like to talk people into trying it out, and I'm amazed at how many people have never even seen a 1-iron.

The Wilson Staff FG-17 1 iron in my basement has almost the same specs as the Titleist 718 AP2 3 iron in my bag ... But they do NOT play the same.

I had a few back in the day.  I had a set of Bob Toski Target irons from 1977 when he started the company, 2-PW, a year or two later ordered a 1 iron, couldn't hit it at all, but I wasn't bad with the 2 iron.  In the mid 80s got a Eye 2 one iron, now that was a club, easy to hit and long.  For a year or two played Palmer butter knife blades 2-PW, but had a Eye 2 one iron and Lob wedge....

 

Several years later bought a Hogan PC blade one iron off a friend, Hogan himself would have struggled to hit that thing.....

 

I played in a tournament this past spring and it was really windy and the course was bone dry, after the first round almost went out and bought a driving iron to play on day two but held off.  I'm playing in the state senior Am in September in Amarillo, I assume it will be windy again, was thinking of picking up this to have ready to go if the wind is whipping, my local shop has a slightly used one calling my name...

Don't have pictures, but still have my 15' Mizuno 1 iron that I learned with back in the 90s.  If my ball striking gets at all stinky, it's quickly resolved by 1 iron. 

 

I am always thankful for the person who influenced me to buy a 1 iron.  Even at 70+ yrs young, I still rely on (2) 17' 2 irons, a T200 with a Tensei AV Raw White Hybrid 90-S shaft, the other T-MB 2 iron with Tensei AV White Am2, 92-S.  It's a knuckle dragging joy to whack either of them, especially when fairways are running, and I whack 1 or 2 iron past those much younger using hybrids or woods.  It gets attention.

 

Still 1 or 2 iron are the best clubs in my bag, never miss a fairway.  Can't beat old school.

I bought a Ping Eye 2 in a bargain bin for $25.  Fun to play with every now and then. Mostly just sits in my garage lol.  But will never get rid of it.

Don't use it any longer....my 1970 Kenneth Smith custom 1 Iron.  Made lots of eagles on par 5 holes.  Complete with a 130g Rex steel shaft.  Had the entire set 1 - 99 (sand wedge).....best round... 8 under, 64 with them.

I have a couple 1-irons, a Mizuno MP-14 and a Titleist Tour Forged (with custom grinding and stripped raw.)  Both are built up with ~60g A-Flex graphite shafts.  I can actually get decent launch angle with this setup, making these clubs useful for normal play.

A lil smack of the old Wilson FG-53 Gooseneck 1 iron with DG S300 shaft off a mat. Fun club to hit. Nowadays it's about even with a jacked 4 iron 🙂 but definitely my most satisfying to strike club, that should probably see the course.

I'm still rocking my big bertha 2002 1 iron during the summer months. Ballspeed is still right up there despite it being 20+ years old, great fairway finder

I have Ping Eye 2 1 iron. Occasionally put it in the bag for fun, it's a fun club to hit. I can usually hit pretty good shots off the tee with it.

 

I think it would be fun to put a modern graphite driving iron shaft in it when I find one for a good bargain...
