Ultimate Feel Player's Bag

von3jack

Recommended Posts

If you were to create a bag for a "Feel Player" what would it look like? I realize that people may have different definitions of what a feel player is but I'm just curious where this could go! So when you think about someone who is classified as the ultimate feel player, what does their set up look like?

I would say my bag is built around feel, but I haven't tried the woods yet. But my irons are the best feeling set I've ever hit. Good or bad you know EXACTLY where you hit the face.

<edit> but when it's good, it's glorious.

Persimmon driver and 3 wood. Set of older blades, something with the a lot of mass in the center for shot shaping, like Ram Tour Grinds, likely 2-9. Probably only two wedges, a dedicated, slightly weak pitching wedge and a wedge that slots nicely between a sand wedge and a lob wedge, maybe a 57?

By "feel player" I assume we're talking about somebody who can execute partial shots and pick a shape almost naturally. This is somebody who doesn't need extraordinary distance to score because of that ability.

Nothing too low spinning, With the reality being they will spin way more than most people play.  Forged CB’s as a minimum, blades being a better option.

Feel requires flighting & shaping the ball, if you can’t spin it enough then forget it.

Looks like they're relying on how much they learned young and then a ton of excuses for why they're bad at what they're bad at.

So the ultimate feel player has

No Ping or Tour Edge in his/her bag but it does have aspirational pieces and specs.

Pretty bold statement there.

I've always been a "feel" player.  Growing up in the era before rangefinders or even good course markings, feel was all we had.  It isn't the equipment that dictates this though.  The type of player most refer to as "feel" is someone a bit gray in the beard, with well worn (likely mismatched) clubs that they play very well.

Those will most often be Titleist or Mizuno MB/CB/AP2 variety, a mixed combination of FW's, maybe a hybrid or 2, and a trust, short driver.  They look for accuracy over length with every shot and care more about hitting a number than how far they hit balls in a simulator.

If you see someone like this, hide your wallet and swallow your pride.  You just might learn something watching them dissect the course.

I would suggest that the most feel part of the bag is in the wedges. In wedgeland, it's a duel between the feelers and the mechanics.

Which are you? Or, is there a third or fourth approach we don't know about?

I think I blend the two of them, and also throw in a third variant where I hit a shot that is absolute clown shoes, i.e. sticking the leading edge in the ground 2” behind the ball like I’ve never held a wedge before

Ditto, OTB...you and I grew up in the same era.  Agree with all your comments.

Would also add a "feel" player controls his iron distance with trajectory and spin.  Prefers to hit a knock-down draw to a back left pin or a slight left-to right fade to a front right pin.  There are no "stock" shots to a "feel" player.

If you listen to Tiger's Tuesday Masters press interview he revealed he learned how and where to use a 4 iron to chip with from playing practice rounds with Raymond Floyd back in the 90s.  A "feel" player is always open to learn from the old guard.

I think I'm a combination between the feeler and mechanic in the above chart. Anyway, if it were for me, and I were a better golfer...

Irons would be Titleist CB or Miura, Mizuno, or Bridgestone equivalent. I'd stick with my beloved KBS Tour 130X or maybe dip back into X100 territory.

I'd probably go with a LAB Mezz and Accra shaft for the putter. Non the typical choice but they feel great and I'd worry about line more than stroke.

Wedges... gotta have a 64 in there for me, with a high toe. In an ideal world I would have a first generation PM Grind. I like 5 or 6 degree gaps after my pitching wedge, so 58, 52 if the pitching wedge were 46 degrees. But I could easily do it differently - like the above chart - and use the 64 for greenside sand and etc., and run a 50 and 55 or whatever. Same shafts as the irons, with Howard's spinner trick.

Driver is easy at the moment - TSR4 with Tensei 1K Black 65TX. Feels great, performs very well, and lets me do all kinds of fun stuff with he ball.

Swingweights... driver and irons would be D4. PW and others would be D7.

I have no idea how I'd fill the gap between driver and 3 iron. Or 4 iron. I'd be tempted to do what I do now and have a T200 or equivalent 2 iron with graphite, and a T200 or equivalent 3 iron with my regular iron shaft, and D4 swingweight.

Ball - gotta be a ProV1 or AVX.

This is a bit different to my "ultimate" bag which would be VERY similar to what I have now (see signature) but with the PM's back...
