What’s THE WORST Hole at Augusta ?

True...but I went to a swanky Manhattan private school for 7 years...coat and tie.

 

ANGC reminds me too much of all that garbage (and some schoolmates are now members)...I spent mostof my HS Saturdays in detention...generally for petty rules violations.   I don't think I'd last more than a few weeks before getting asked to leave. 

 

It's like here in LA, where you can't wear shorts at LACC or Bel Air.   Why would anyone want to join a club where the majority thinks that's a good idea?

7th. Plays too long for such a sloping green. 17th is a bit bland as well. Most underrated hole is 5th. A seriously tough hole.

Most closing holes are uphill.  Common thing to put the clubhouse at the highest point on the property.

 

My vote is for 17.

 

The par threes aside from 12 are largely forgettable.  16 is not as bad and probably few would say it is bad but I feel it is buoyed by its place in the round and some remarkable Sunday shots and chip ins.

Good point. If we had put our clubhouse on a hill it wouldn’t flood every year.

To me, any Par 3 hole over 200 yards on any course is the worst so that makes hole #4 my choice.

Ha, I’ve been in it!  
 

The MacKenzie bunker is one of the most iconic ones in golf. His bunker style has been taken from this bunker and copied on many other courses. 
 

For pros you’re right. It used to come much more into play before the green was moved back 50 yds to the top of the hill. But despite that it frames every shot of the hole perfectly. Any golf fan can see a picture and instantly think, #10. 
 

For members and guests it does come into play.

Number 4.  You have to hit a perfect shot and get a bit of luck to make birdie there.   Because of the greens, length of shot, and bunker it forces most of the field to try to play safe.  I much prefer par 3's were birdie is in play but so is double with a miss around the green.

In 1936 they needed rowboats to get players to the 16th green, the creek had regular issues with flooding, the area below the tee/green was a soggy mess. So they dammed it in 1950 because they needed to (and it still flooded in 1990) and they can't undo the dam or "restore" the original hole.  It's been fine for the past 73 years.  The "look"? - matter of taste.

Someday that bunker may come back into play.  (Originally, the green was guarded by that bunker.  After moving the green to lengthen the hole, they left it there, just because.)

I'd probably have to go with #2. Neither the drive nor the second shot are particularly difficult, and the green always seems  like it feeds everything towards the pin position. 

 

#9 might be a close second, but that approach shot is absurdly uphill.

I shall take all your suggestions ITT and raise it at the next committee meeting.

 

The 1st is the worst hole, there's no real landing area for a good drive, and the green just pops up unnaturally above the landscape. 

 

Good architecture should mean hitting a good drive gives you the best look at the green from a flatter lie. Doesn't apply to a lot of Augusta holes now, too many of them 2,9,10,11 are just blast it down the slope far as possible and hope for the best.

Yeah it was amazing to me how he took the take he did and instead of saying "Yeah I didn't think about it much when I said it.."but just doubled down on his bad take. He then could have showed us a pro that is better from 100 (after feathering a long iron/hybrid/wood to a20 yard wide fairway)than 50 yards.

I hear you.  I don’t like the hole but they’re not going to change it as it has too much tournament history.

I gotta go with #2. I don't really get the design of the green with the typical club and shot that you are playing from a long distance downhill. And it feels a little gimmicky how balls that are rolling on that green will funnel.

Has any professional golfer ever hit a ball there in the past 3 decades?

That makes sense, but why leave it there? I have played courses where cross bunkers are set up to look like they are next to the green but in reality there is a lot of room. These usually just fool you once...
