Fujikura Axiom, anyone hit these yet?

So I finally got to try these today.  I hit them head to head vs. my set up.  Srixon ZX7 7 iron head on both.  Steelfiber 95 S vs. Axiom 105 S.  D2 swingweight for both. I went back and forth with each multiple times hitting sets of 5-10 shots in each set.  The data was clear for me.

Steelfiber:

Launch angle 19.5 degrees

Spin rate 5200 rpm

Swing speed 80 mph

Carry distance 162 yards

Axiom:

Launch angle 20.5 degrees

Spin rate 5400 rpms

Swing speed 79 mph

Carry distance 160 yards

However dispersion was significantly better with the Axiom.  My bad swings with the Steelfiber were 45 feet offline, while my bad misses with the Axiom were 21 feet offline, so a pretty impressive difference.  I was also getting about 9 yards of roll out with the Steelfiber, so my fitter thinks the  added spin with the Axiom will be a benefit as well.  Basically giving up a couple of yards for half the dispersion; great trade off as far as I am concerned.  I definitely felt like I was hitting the sweetspot more consistently with the Axiom.  I have the shafts on order, so we will see if this holds true on the course.

Looking forward to hearing your on course review on these.  I’m recovering from elbow surgery and can’t play for a few more months, but have been debating just going back to the i95 when I return vs making another treck to Indy to see Tony and get fit again, partly to test the Axiom’s and partly to see if the Accra’s are still the clear winner in the fitting.  They were the clear winner indoors, On the course though it’s just hard to beat the dispersion of the i95s.  Part of that could have been the heads I had the Accra’s in but there was just something about that i95 for me, outside of the dispersion I really believe a lot of it was the feedback it provided at impact. It wasn’t nearly as muted.

I really like the SF i95's.  I was actually shocked when the Axiom showed better dispersion.  I kept going back and forth with multiple sets convinced that it was just a fluke, but the data was extremely consistent.  Tony was laughing at me, because I just couldn't believe it.  We will see if I hit more greens on the course.  I am typically around 40-50% of greens in regulation, so I have a good starting point to look for meaningful on course results.

Definitely the dispersion was a huge selling point for me.

I will say that you may need to adjust your shot start lines because (for me at least) the irons don't curve as much as they used to with my old set-up.  Not a bad thing!  Will just take adjustment.

Sounds like it’s worth waiting until I’m cleared to play again to go up and see Tony to test the Axiom’s and get fit for new irons all at the same time.   If the dispersion is that much tighter than the i95s with a smoother feel they’ll be a winner.

Agree with members who won their's at the Fujikura fitting.  Smooth loading and a great match in my current 2021 T100S 4iron.  Purchased another 4iron to do side by side tests.  Swing weight with KBS Tour 120S was D2.  Axiom 105S was D1.  Carried a bit farther, flew a bit higher, and landed in a tighter circle that has me thinking about bending the one with the Axiom a degree stronger.  First world problem to do the rest of the set as it will be expensive.  But, really enjoying the benefits of graphite iron shafts!  Much easier on the joints/body as these are a pleasure to swing.  Loving the Axiom shaft and not getting any younger! (only other recent graphite that I can compare to was the standard ones during my Titleist fitting - Steelfiber and Tensei White/Blue and the fitter recommended what I have, the KBS).  Now that I can compare them back to back a no brainer when extra funds become available!

So I just played 3 rounds with the Axiom this past weekend.  On course performance confirmed my initial launch monitor testing.  The ball launched slightly higher with alittle more spin than my Steelfibers.  Contact was solid in all 3 rounds.  Dispersion was definitely better.  I play a draw that can easily turn into a hook.  The Axiom kept the ball flight as more of a draw, and less of a hook than I play with the Steelfibers. Interestingly, the Axiom was 2-3 yards shorter than the Steelfiber during launch monitor testing, which I assumed was due to the increase in spin.  On course testing showed no distance difference; I was hitting all my usual distances without any increased effort.  I gained confidence in my irons over the course of the weekend.  I am in the honeymoon period, but very good initial testing.  Looking forward to playing them more.

I am a former wrist surgery guy (2 years ago) and before surgery I had started playing graphite for the reduced irritation.  I played Recoil 110 F5's for 5+ years.   During covid I tried EVERY new graphite iron shaft released (I bought at least a 6 iron shaft to test in every model) and for some I would also buy a 9 iron if the 6 iron performed well.  I tested KBS, Mitsubishi, Aldila, SF, UST, Accra, Catalyst, and a few others I am probably forgetting.

MMT, KBS, and Catalyst all were ones I bought a second shaft to test short irons.  However none of them outperformed the Recoils for me.  Flash back to late last year and I bought a set of PXG 0317St's just to test and was gonna swap out the stock elevate shafts.   I stuffed them full of foam and have played them for 9 months now.  I discovered I can play pain free for the most part, but if I practice it goes wrong.

I was gonna put the recoils in my PXG irons but I decided to check out the Axioms.  I have hit balls twice and played twice dropping back to hit a 7 iron numerous times.

What I noticed.

1. Mishits are not going as far offline and therefore staying closer to the hole, and they travel closer to the hole.

2. I am not as sore after a practice session with the 7 iron as I was even playing with steel, which I assumed would be the case, but they felt even better.

3. The swing weights came out exactly where I wanted, because they are a lighter and closer to my recoils.

4.  Total distance is similar, as in I did not notice anything on hitting my shots to my total known 7 iron distance pre-Axiom.

So I have ordered a shaft for my 5 iron, 9 iron and GW to test as well.  Is it a little overboard?  Maybe as that will only leave my 6,8,PW without an Axiom shaft.  I will MOI match them the same way I did the Recoils.   My 4 iron has an AD-DI 95 in it that I like so far.

The biggest thing for the Axioms that I have seen, is the reduced curvature on misshits and not losing as much distance on those mishits either.

What flex did you have before and what is the axiom shaft you are trying? 7 iron distance?

I’m not the same speed as you guys, but I’ve played SF, Recoil, MMT all in Reg flex. I was fitted in R2 (Senior) in Axiom. I haven’t checked CPM, but to me the Axiom feel the same flex wise as the Reg Flex in the other brands. The Axiom just have a much tighter dispersion with a touch more peak height and spin. The one word that was used by all of the guys on the fitting trip was “stable”. Maybe @Puppetmaster, @eric61, or @CactusGolf can chime in since they swing it at a similar speed to you.

If I remember correctly, my 7-iron swing speed hovers right around the 90 mph mark.  I was using the KBS Tour C-Taper in 105 and was fitted into the 105S Axiom.  7 iron distance is 180-185.

So I have now played 4 rounds with Axiom shafts.  The dispersion with them is better than my previous shafts.  There seems to be less hook or slice on mishits compared to the Steelfibers.  Contact feels very "square".  I am gaining confidence.  I've had a few shots where I knew I was going to have a bad 20 yard hook and miss the green right and long (I am a lefty), but instead it caught the right edge of the green.  I am playing twice this coming week/weekend, so I am hoping to have enough shots at that point for this to be conclusive.  Distance is unchanged, which is good, as initial indoor testing showed them to be 2-3 yards shorter due to 1 degree higher launch and and 200-300 more rpms.  Feel is really nice at impact, and the shafts have a really nice quality finish.  I'm a fan so far.

  • 2 weeks later...

I originally posted this in the Fuji Member Trip thread, but I think this is a better place for it to continue on.

Original post/question: I have one set w/Recoil 110F4 and one set with MMT 95S…tell me what to do re. AXIOM, as the feedback on the 75 was so positive.  Subsequent update:

In response to my “tell me what to do” post… I purchased a twin 921Forged 6iron head to my gamer set, and ordered both 105S and 75S Axiom Mid shafts

Built up the 105S to go head to head vs. my Recoil 110F4s. Tested over two sessions, two days apart; one at club range with Titleist practice balls, other on my Fiberbuilt mat with ProV1; both captured with BLP/Foresight.

Summary of results:

Ballspeed: Recoil +1mph

Launch: Axiom +2°

Backspin: Axiom +546

Carry: Identical

Total: Recoil +3yds

Peak: Axiom +8feet

Descent: Axiom +3°

If I understand what I’m seeing correctly, I’m getting a higher launch, higher flight and more Bspin with the Axiom.  Despite very slightly lower ballspeed, the carry is the same and the Recoil rolls out farther for a higher total.  So I’m giving up 3yds of distance for more precise “stopping power” (with a 6iron 🤷🏻‍♂️)

Dispersion average shifted left 2.7 yards with the Axiom. OTOH, I’ve been playing these Recoils since early 2020, so I’m sure there will be a familiarity bias that would go away with time. That might apply to all the results, truthfully. Hard to believe 5grams of static weight would be responsible for that big of a start line shift.  Also, the Std Dev was less with the Axiom (as expected), despite the left shift.

I went through this drill a couple years ago with individual P760 7iron heads that I still have (that’s how I ended up with Recoil and MMT in my two sets).  So I think I will pull the 105, take another 1/2” off the tip, and build it and the 75S into the P760 heads to compare.

But so far, I’m pretty impressed.  Feels similar to the Recoil, probably a touch firmer/less mush.  Love the idea of a faster stopping approach shot…confidence inspiring.  Which was EXACTLY how I felt when I switched to the Ventus in my Driver/Fwys.

Don’t be afraid of trying the 75S. It’s VERY stable, and if it wasn’t labeled, you wouldn’t believe it was 75 grams. That should give you more ball speed, with a touch higher launch and spin. I’ve played SF, Recoil, and MMT. Axiom is head and shoulders above those performance wise.

Test #2 complete. P760 7iron w/105s, w/75s and gamer 921F 7iron w/Recoil 110f4

Dont hate me, but that 75s was almost impossible for me to hit, and I’m not a high speed guy.  Had to hit 20+ balls to get 10 decent ones for a comparison.  Felt super…invisible (?)  to me.  I thought it would struggle, but man, disaster.  So, for me, it’s out.

Found the other two comparison interesting considering the Recoil swing weights 2 points lighter, has 2° stronger loft, and a head that should be easier to hit well (and it’s my current gamer!)

Summary of results:

Ballspeed: Axiom +3mph

Launch: Axiom +.5°

Backspin: Axiom +50rpm

Carry: Axiom +5.2yds

Total: Recoil +4yds

Peak: Axiom +3feet

Descent: Axiom +.8°

Not as dramatic a difference as the 6iron test, but two different heads in this one, which introduces some variable. Also a bit surprised by the launch, spin, peak and decent numbers being so close with the loft difference between the two clubs. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Oh, still about a 3 yard left bias on the Axiom, so maybe that 5grams does matter. But full disclosure, this is one of my off-season improvement targets…I’m getting a bit out-in, and hitting some pulls lately.

At worse, I’d say it’s a push when using the different heads(7i), and Axiom wins with the identical heads (6iron).  I’ve got a set of new 923F heads for a winter build, and leaning towards these Axiom shafts, unless a proper fitting produces a clear better option.

Hope this is informative—or at least validates what everyone else has already been saying about these shafts. 😂

Currently in px 6.5 and love them but elbows starting to aggravate.  Seems like axiom 125 is my best bet.  Mmt was too loose and la golf weight appears to be tricky and could be too stiff.  What to do, what to do!

How tacky are these?

If you’re asking about the NO1, I’d say that it is tackier than the Iomic Sticky while still maintaining its texture. I really loved the Iomic Sticky, but it would lose its texture pretty quickly.

Yeah. Iomic was tacky but didn’t last an entire season so I changed to pure pro grips. But now they are no longer available to need to find an alternative. I also heard the NO1 has a short butt cap so can play 1/4” shorter. Can anyone confirm?

Hmm. Certainly possible, as I originally received the Miuras made with MMT Protos and they definitely sat in my hands shorter compared to another set I had. I cannot say it's a whole 1/4" however.  The Axioms were installed to a more standard length, so now I don't have anything to compare it to.

What's the best way to get these into a new build, like a set of T100 or new Callaway Apex line? No one is offering these as an upgrade...

Probably due to the fact no one is wants to double the price of an already expensive set of irons.
