Oak Hill CC - Videos, Pictures, Architecture & More

Both Golfweek and Golf Digest have posted flyovers on YouTube.  I like the Ross touches.  It looks overly narrow however, but that’s how you can protect a championship course as the ball goes so far.  Hopefully the USGA reigns in equipment much more.  Would love to see Oak Hill return to how wide Ross designed it.

Looks pretty good.  Better than the Masters had in fact.

Wow what a dry stretch. Amazing! Let's hope it holds. Wouldn't be hard to beat the Masters wx 🤣

Anyway right around this date in 1989 the area had a "10 snow storm! Imagine that 🤣

I have watched two vids this morning on the course.  I don't think I want to attempt playing it.  There are some landing areas that are just insane how tight they are due to bunkers, the creek, trees or all three at the same time.  The new No. 6 gives me the sweats watching the aerial.  I despise the idea of playing into an adjacent fairway but this might be the one I attempt to do it and go way right of the water and lay up to the fairway fronting the green from there.  Per the golf digest vid you need a 300 yard drive on the par four 17th to have a view at the green.  Uphill tee shot no less too.

As much as I love a difficult set up for pros, I don't think they are going to be able to get the rough too tall or this is going to get to being a one dimensional game of tee ball darts.  At the same time, I think they left enough trees in their resto to prevent guys from bailing into the rough in an effort to steer the ball away from the hazards.

Appreciate the observations.  Indeed I think courses play a bit more interesting with wider fairways that allow for the ball to roll to awkward angles, trees BUT also reward hitting to the correct/preferred side of the fairway.  Like Torrey Pines, narrow fairways with deep rough take some interest out of the driver and IMO bring more luck into the equation.  You could have a very good driving week and miss many fairways by a yard or two...into often the deepest stuff!

I think for the overall architecture the narrow fairways, either actually physically narrow corridors/mowing lines or made so by the hazards, fits here on this course.  I do not see the greens designed in a way that makes them critical to be approached from the "correct" side of the fairway.  There are enough greenside hazards that you aren't looking to be in a spot in the fairway where you can avoid playing over them and they, for the most part, aren't designed where you would land a ball of a certain shape into a spot and let it funnel to position on the green.

Where ANGC is a "second shot course," Oak Hill asks much more of the tee shot and just generally more "here is the ask, now go execute it."  That isn't a knock either way, just my observation of the different styles in which they were conceived and constructed.  In this instance Ross was much more forthright about the challenges he designed (and Green returned) into the course.

I can appreciate this assessment and difference in strategy.  However, it was noted in a few renovation reviews (The Fried Egg and Golf History) that the fairways are currently about half the width of the original specs.  I may have misunderstood those review comments. I will review....LOL.

I think one of the interesting factors with the renovation is the hazards. These are not bunkers that you bail into on a second shot from the rough. And the greens have a lot of options for pin placement that were not there before. Some of the front location will be a challenge to get close without serious risk/reward choices.

I believe they are making it internal OB to prevent players from playing down 7 to avoid the water on 6
