Tipped TR blue VS ventus black

Flip4000

Recommended Posts

I have an untipped Ventus black 7x driver shaft and a Ventus blue TR 7X driver shaft that is about half an inch shorter but tipped about an inch to 1.5 inches.

Would you still expect the Ventus TR to launch slightly higher than the black with more spin or would tipping counteract that?

I find that tipping shafts don't really bring down launch but rather, make the shaft feel more stout and drop spin.

That seems to make sense. From a feel standpoint they actually feel somewhat similar to my untrained hands and when I hit them, I didn't see anything significantly distinguishable in the flight

I have a TR black 6X straight in and a TR blue 6X tipped 1/2"

The tr black 6X was still lower spin on average by about 200rpm vs. the tipped blue.

I have about 20 rounds on the TR Blue 6s untipped and just can’t stop it from going left. Have the Stealth+ sliding weight in full fade and even play the head 1.5 open. Should I try tipping it? Maybe try a Black 6s?

That may be a path vs. face type of thing. I could be wrong as there are a far more educated WRX members, but I know u seem to like a lot of same shafts that i do, and would have guessed the blue TR would fit u well. I have a 6s that i ended up tipping 1.0”, started with 0.5”. Seems like 0.5” wouldn’t make a massive difference either way, but with the tipped 1” I haven’t had that real bad left miss. Majority of tee balls are straight balls with some falling to the right a few yards, if needed i can still hit a small draw.
Didn’t u have the Rogue ST D with a heavier heel weight? Seems like a big difference/change with the driver head specs in particular. If u have any other shafts with a Taylormade adapter, it’s worth putting a different shaft in there and mess around on the range to see if any difference.

Thanks man. I have recently made a drastic swing change that is paying big dividends throughout my bag. It is now affecting my tee ball.

Agree about the face to path is my issue now. Did have a ST Max D that really went left as I started making a swing change. Stealth TR Blue was way better, but now can’t stop this left thing only with my driver. The rest of the bag is a baby draw. I had a OG Ventus Black that PXG fit me into last year, but my old swing could not load it as well as it needed in the course. Thinking how much harder I am loading it now it may be worth a try.

Oh if you overhauled your swing, then you may start to like a different feel in the shaft. The TR Blue is absolutely more stout that regular Ventus Blue, but if the black worked for u recently, then you may do better with the stiffer mid section now. Tipping it could help out a bit, as i hit a few with a 6s that was untipped then went back to my 6s tipped 1” and did notice a difference. The non tipped TR Blue had a lot more liveliness and the first ball i hit did end up going left, just for some reference.

Tipping is for feel tweaking, NOT trajectory or spin.  Blue and Black have similar ULTRA-tip stiffness.  Fujikura doesn't suggest tipping the Ventus Velocore TR shafts.

When I lose one, it's left, due to bad swing.  It's not the shaft.

I have 2 original V.V Red series and 1 TR Blue series in my driver; all have 3" tip sections.  Tipping should be done after tip prep, and before sleeve install, then butt cut to length; least that's how my guys do it.

Curious, last I checked PXG didn't offer Fujikura TR line in anything other Blue & Red "R" flex.  Odd, not sure why that is.  They didn't offer S or X flex.

Yea, my last PXG was before the TR came out. I bought the OG Ventus Black. Not sure what they offer now.

For what it's worth the OG black is a far superior profile. TR blue and red is a different story though. Almost no tour uptake on the TR black and pretty much everyone still gaming the OG black.

Tipping is mostly for feel but can also drop spin if the shaft is tipped enough.  I've seen it on trackman.

Agree, but for "most" people, suggesting 1-2" tipping in hopes of lowering spin a few hundred, IMO is not the best solution.  Too easy to ruin the shaft.  The other aspect is most people don't have a consistent SS or ball striking for S or X Black or Blue; stock tip section is already ultra-stiff.  IMO - Improving the swing and ball striking is the better answer to lowering spin.  But, people will do what they do... 🙂  Have a good day.

@KevCannon @Pepperturbo I am a knucklehead. You guys were both right about my issues. It was face to path issue  and just a swing issue. Spent an hour this morning on the range working on my driver swing and got it all worked out. Actually moved the sliding weight back to neutral and was hitting way more solid, higher, and very straight. Was just a swing thing and NOT a shaft thing. Loving the TR Blue. I’ll hush and move on now😳

I’ve got a VB 6X tipped 1 inch (45.5 playing length) and a Blue TR 6TX untipped (45 playing length with weight added to make up for SW lost).  I think the TR may be a little more active but I need more time with them to tell. I’ve been playing VB since the SIM came out, these are both in a TSR3 head.

What’s your thoughts between these two shafts? Those are the exact specs I am debating between. Thx

I really enjoyed the loading feel of the TR Blue 6X tipped 1/2". I bought both of the shafts as a bundle and hit the blue first, then black. Black TR wasn't overly hard to load but didn't feel as active as the blue. Ball flight was definitely higher and felt spinner on the blue. At the time i was hitting a bunch of fairways but definitely wasn't as long as my previous set ups. Played a bunch before I actually got on a trackman.

Once I got on the trackman I found (range balls - tried to pick the "nicest" balls donated from the players on the course into the range I could):

Ventus TR Blue 6X tipped 1/2:

Drive AoA average @ 1.2*, range was -.7* to 3.0*

Club path was average of -3*

Face angle average of -2*

CHS average 118 mph, high of 122

Spin average 2700 rpms, high of 3600, low of 1800 (all strike related)

Average carry 286, high of 295

Ventus TR Black 6X:

AoA average of 2.0*

Club path -3*

Face angle -2.5*

CHS average 118, high of 123

Spin average 2450, high of 3100, low of 1600 (all strike related)

Average carry 291, high of 298

Both combo's were producing nice slight fades (or cuts). My miss with the black was more of a straight pull, my miss with the blue was more of a pull fade. I've been playing the TR black ever since. I "probably" hit less fairways (data says it's the same) but definitely hit tthe black combo far. I still believe that I prefer the TR blue loading feeling, however, definitely don't mind the way the TR black feels. Its still very smooth. I ended up selling the blue.

Only other positive thing I can provide is, after I settled on the black, went through Howard's DIY Driver Tune up to dial in strike location. Ended up cutting off 1/2" on the TR black to just under 45" playing length and added +13gm weight. Now I live on or around the fairway with strikes in the middle of the driver face almost all the time. I have never been more deadly with a driver in my life.

Our numbers are similar with both TR Black and TR Blue, but I'm 2-4* in to out and spin is just a touch lower.  With the Paradym TD with TR Black combo, I average 295-300 off the tee carry so my numbers are in line with yours.  Best thing is that my setup is very stable/reliable and the duck hook is pretty much gone.  20 yard draw at the worst which I'll take any day of the week as my miss.
