Beginner set recommendations please?

Hi all-question about a set for a beginning teen golfer. Big enough for adult clubs. They want to keep budget around $500. Looking at Callaway Edge at Costco or maybe Tour Edge but open to other suggestions. They are not keen on buying piecemeal. Thanks!!

Go onto Callaway Preowned with them and choose a 3 woods, iron set, sand wedge, putter. You should be able to do that for about $500 if careful.

 

Point out that they can return any of the clubs that don’t work well, unlike a set, where playing literally one club could prevent a return. these clubs will also retain value for resale, whereas the set will immediately loose a good amount of value.

I wouldn't waste your money on any type of "beginner box set" as those clubs are almost always total garbage. However, $500 is stretching it a bit for a full set of clubs. Even used ones. You'll probably need at least $200-300 just for a set of irons unless you want to hit up every pawn shop and/or thrift store in town and hope you get lucky.

 

I'd definitely go with something used. Any type of game improvement irons should be fine. For driver/woods try to find something a bit newer (maybe 6-7 years old). For wedges and putter I'd just find something that is in half decent shape. Brand/age shouldn't matter at all for those.  

 

2nd swing has some $200 iron sets from Adams, Cobra, TM, Ping, and etc. Most are only 6-W or 7-W, but a beginner doesn't have a ton of use for a 4 or 5 iron anyway. 

 

If that doesn't work you could look at doing a half set type situation (D, 5w, 5i, 7i, 9i, SW, Putter) and just buy them individually. As he/she plays more they can always round out the set or upgrade if they decide to keep playing.

You won’t be able to choose near-current models at that price, but older ones shouldn’t be too far off.

Rather than buy a box set, consider second hand clubs and also consider a half set with every other iron.  D-5W-4 Hybrid, 6, 8, PW, SW, and a putter.  That should be enough clubs to get them going.  There is a 9 hole executive course I often walk where I take a similar set when I'm just trying to get some work in.

When my 12 year old out grows the longest set of US kids clubs that's my next move. 

 

Easy enough to buy just the clubs he needs, right shafts and be able to add more as he grows.

I learned to play with a 4I, 7I, AW, SW, and putter on an 9 hole executive course.

I started from the forward tees, so that my 2nd shot was often an approach shot that had a reasonable chance of reaching the green with the  7I, AW, or SW.
