Should i play 4,6,8 wood or 4,7,9 wood

Hello everyone

been playing for 3 years. Play a lot, handicap down to 8 now I currently have a 3 wood lofted up 2 that plays as 4 wood (17 degrees), and a 7 wood played at standard loft at 21 degrees.

My 3 wood carry is 210

My 7 wood carry is 195

My next club is 5i. Carry is 172

I have a gap at 180 and need a 185 club. I love hitting fairway woods way more than hybrids and irons for the height and trajectory . I think i have 2 options

Option 1 : buy a 5 wood at 18 degree and loft to 19. Loft my 7 wood to 23 and effectively olay a 4,6,8 wood

4 wood - 210 carry

6 wood - 205 carry

8 wood - 185 carry

Option 2: buy a 9 wood at 24 degree and play a 4,7,9

4 wood - 210

7 wood - 195

9 wood -185

im keaning option 1 because as i get faster and de loft everything back to standard and play traditional 3,5,7 wood

Driver - TSR 2 10 degrees. D2 setting. Fujikura Ventus Blue 5s

4 wood - Paradym 15 degrees. +2, Draw setting. Fujikura Ventus Blue 6s

7 wood - Ping G430 Max 21 degrees. Standard loft, Neutral. Ping Chrome 75s

9 wood - Ping G430 Max 24 degrees. Standard Loft, Neutral. Ping Chrome 75s

5-AW - Ping I230, black dot. Dynamic gold 105s.

SW - Titleist Vokey 54, 10 bounce, S grind. Nippon Modus 105s

LW - Titleist vokey 58, 8 bounce, M Grind. Nippon Modus 105s

Putter - Toulon Las Vegas

Ball - ProV1x, Maxli Tour X

My only advice - I had loft down the 7wd and loft up my 9 wood to keep cover yardage in check.  The lofted down 5wd is a better option than a 3wd IMO, as well. Same carry yardage....better descent

At my ss - that 9wd is a carry yardage weapon that carried too far

Get a 9wd to match your 7wd. No sense in adjusting yardages on 3 clubs when you can just add a club that fills your gap issue.

I'm gaming 4, 7, 9 woods at 16.5, 21 and 26 degrees. Just got a cheapy warrior 9 wood that is the same loft as my 5 iron, so for me it's a 4 iron replacement. 7 wood is my favorite wood in the bag. Tested a 21 and 23 degree and didn't see that big of a yardage difference. 4 wood is for tee shots only right now. If I were to do a 3 piece matching set I would go with Acer heads.

I’ve always been told 3* separation in woods and upper irons, 4* from 6 iron down.

Can you get a 9W that matches the model of your 7W? Or, do you have a mixed bag on woods.

Adding the 9W would be simplest, given you like to hit FWs. Just make sure the 9W isn't too much of a good thing.

For historic curiosity, I have accumulated a brace of Callaway Hawkeye titanium FWs: 2, 3, 5, 7, 9. Have tried the 9W, but the ball flight is a bit bloopy.

What's In The Bag (As of June 2024, post-MAX change + new putter)

Post-Injury Long Clubs > Cle XL2 Draw Driver 12° w/ Aldila Accent 40 R-flex shaft // Big Bertha B21 5W w/RCH 45 Lite shaft

(Former Long Clubs -> Driver: Tour Edge EXS 10.5° (base loft); weights neutral   ||  FWs:  Calla Rogue 4W + 7W)

Hybrid:  Calla Big Bertha OS 4H at 22°  ||  Irons:  Calla Mavrik MAX 5i-PW

Wedges*:  Calla MD3: 48°... MD4: 54°, 58° ||  PutterΨSeeMore FGP + SuperStroke 1.0PT, 33" shaft

Ball: 1. Srixon Q-Star Tour   ||  Bag: Sub70 14-Way Stand Bag (royal blue) /

Backup: Sun Mountain Three 5 stand bag

    * MD4 54°/10 S-Grind replaced MD3 54°/12 W-Grind.

     Ψ  Backups:

  • Ping Sigma G Tyne (face-balanced) + Evnroll Gravity Grip |
  • Slotline Inertial SL-583F w/ SuperStroke 2.MidSlim (50 gr. weight removed) |

Neither…lol.

Just kidding, although i had never heard of an 8 or 9 wood until reading this. Assuming u don’t get along with hybrids? I would strongly consider using some type of hybrid instead of 8/9 wood.

Never heard of a 6 or 8 wood?? Which manufacturers make a 6or 8 wood? I would suggest 4-7 wood depending on age and ability you would play 9wood or hybrid equivalent. My father in-law has down to a 7or6 hybrid. Lucky I am not at that age where I need those clubs to get it up

Considering swapping out a few hybrids/irons for woods and was looking at those same numbers up until 11.

2 questions: what’d you drop from the bag to carry the first 3, and secondly, where does the 11 slot in as a replacement for a mid to higher iron?

Our of curiosity, how often are you finding yourself at 185 yards? And what are you currently hitting from there?

Choking down and hitting a cut with the 7 wood seems like it would be a possible option?

Also, what is your gapping between your 7, 6, and 5?

So, my bag today:

Driver

4W 17° (optional for longer courses)

7W 21°

5H 25°

11W 27°

6i 29°

7i 32°

8i 36°

9i 40°

PW 44°

AW 49°

GW 52°

SW 56°

LW 60° or (CH) - optional short courses

PT

For me, that 11W is two things:

1. Tee Club for all par threes from 155-185. I can work it to a high soft fade that rolls not one iota. I can put it back in the stance and roll it out. I can back off or step on it.

2. All approaches with good lies for those same distances. And I tend to have a lot of approaches in that range.

3. Sometimes I'll hit it on longer dog-legs, where roll out would be a problem.

At my age and skill 4i and 5i wouldn't really see action for me. If a short course, I'll trade the 4W for a chipper or LW 60° sometimes for maximum flexibility at the bottom of the bag. I hit or get close to greens all day with that 11W. I'm committed to it on the par 3's too, so it's not some club I hit once a round and just irrationally love anyway. I find I'm more consistent on par 3s if I commit to one club for as many as I'm able-mimics driver tee play more. Played a quick nine today, and easily hit it 5-6 times in each scenario I list above.

Sometimes I want a 9W, but remember I need to punch sometimes or engage the 50-75 yd putt once in a while on hard pack or shorter around the green. So, the 5H stays. It can give me a slightly different flight in approx the same yardages too (10-15 yards shorter on the high end), which I see a lot of as mentioned. So, part of the logic is that I have as many options for flight as possible at the ranges I see most on approach (11W/5H) and don't worry about the loft closeness. Hope that helps.
