PLEASE STOP!  I am in my 50's with a sore back and slightly declining swing speed.  (I'm also a 6 hdcp. at the moment.) I know EXACTLY what you are going through.  According to an orthopedic surgeon friend of mine, you MUST get rid of the inflammation.  My back doesn't hurt when I play either, but I know I'm going to pay for it later.  Yes, the stiffness and soreness is the worst after sitting.  My friend recommended taking a month off and consistently taking anti-inflammatory medication.  Swing fast without hitting a ball puts a lot of stress on the back.  It's really hard to lift weights without using your back (and increasing the inflammation.) Fix the back first, then tackle the swing speed problem.  If you don't do it in this order, you won't need to worry about your speed.  It will be zero, because you won't be able to play anymore.

Medication will kill you!! I'm off of most of what I was on. I only take 4 different prescription meds now.  I pretty much HAVE to take 3 of them because I have heart disease and had open heart surgery at 41yrso! I DO NOT WANT ANY MORE MEDS!! THAT IS DEFINITELY NOT THE ANSWER. IDC what your surgeon friend says.

I am almost 52 now and even though I have only taken the game up again in the last 2 months after around a 13 year lay-off I am stronger and more flexible than I was when I was playing regularly. I have a regular weights and stretching routine. My swing speed is 108-112mph and I am consistently hitting the driver 290-317 yards now which is about 20 yards further than previously. I put it down to those two things. I think flexibility is grossly underrated not just for golf but for many sports in general. I initially started stretching 4 years ago due to back issues and since that time have rarely had any back problems.

“stop moving and take medicine” is the backbone (no pun intended) of the american healthcare system and is possibly the worst advice anyone can give to someone who is actually trying to get better.

First of all, I didn't say to "stop moving".  I said to take a TEMPORARY break from winding yourself up like a pretzel and then unwinding as fast as you can.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if golf is causing back pain, a temporary hiatus might improve the condition.  As far as medication goes, you are clearly not in your 50's.  It's easy to be against medication when you're young and healthy.  Wait until you're older and body parts start to hurt (and stop working as well) and you'll be gobbling down pills like the rest of us.

i’m 35 and i’ve been taking care of my body for the last 20 years specifically so i won’t be doing that in my 50s

my parents are 68 and 63 and neither is on a single prescription, so i don’t know who the “us” is that you’re speaking for, but i can assure you it isn’t everyone.

best of luck to you, and take care.

hey @bscinstnct and @TiScape, my favorite 50 year olds, you guys gobbling down pills to stay vertical?

Haha, no I am not! At only 50, I’d be extremely concerned if that were the case 😜

Besides the healthy lifestyle and hard work in the gym, it sounds like you have good genetics since your parents sound healthy.  My father is on bp meds as am I but my mother doesn't take any pills.  Hypertension runs on his side of the family.  Also taking immunos but that's due to me having a kidney and liver transplant(glycogen storage disease).  Also on doctor prescribed HRT due to my past bodybuilding history.  Aside from all that mess, my blood work comes back fine.  Enjoy your health young man because life ain't s*** when your always sick.

Sometimes age don't matter. Heart disease and diabetes runs in my family. I have both and have had Open heart surgery at 41yrs old (im almost 50 now). I have had 2 foot surgeries due to Neuropathy from diabetes. I do have some back issues but they good for most part. Other than that im chugging along and play golf about 2-3 times a week, thats about nly exercise i get, im not really a gym guy.  So id rather do my speed training with some type weighted club system. Just haven't made up my mind on which one. I really don't like the high prices on those things!

For those saying to make 20+ max speed swings a week/as often as possible:

If incorporating it as part of a range session, would this be best done at the end after hitting the whole bucket? Or may be part way through, before hitting some balls with driver?

You need to be warmed up but not tired. Where that fits in is individual

Yeah the speed sticks and what not do tend to be pricey.  You could always jerry rig 2 or 3 sticks with PVC pipe and something like lead tape to add weight.  As for age and health, I do understand that genetics is a huge factor.  However, as a fitness instructor, I'm also a big believer in exercise and eating healthy.

I hit 20-50 balls maxed out with driver after warming up from hitting about 30 balls.  You may or may not be tired by the time you get to your last 20 or so balls so I don't really recommend doing that.

Well let's just hope that you don't get diagnosed with some sort of autoimmune disease that requires high-power systemic medications, or find out you have some sort of a genetic defect which requires you to be on some extreme medication regime, etc. etc. etc. Most 35-year-olds such as yourself feel invincible. I understand. I felt the same way at 35. Give it 20 years. Even if you take perfectly good care of yourself, some sort of health issue will arise in your future. Just remember, father time remains undefeated. This advice is coming from a practicing physician and surgeon with over 20 years of experience.

I am 68 and I have very rarely taken any anti-inflammatory medication.  I believe that taking that stuff just makes you worse especially if you take it while playing!  LOL that's just how I see it...  Take the pain not the medication and figure out how to keep the pain to a minimum.

I have had significant lower back problems due to past injuries.  I missed some time golfing last year with back problems.  Back to playing now though.  Two things that seem to be helping me are using a total gym to do upper body work while letting gravity stretch my lower back and doing the Tibetan Five Rites exercises every day.  I also do MAT therapy which has helped a great deal.

@Longdriver295 I recently got this, which seemed like a good low budget alternative. Haven't given it a full test yet as I'm mostly on the course right now, but like that I can use whatever shaft I want and is easily portable.

Interesting concept. Wouldn’t use it on my gamer shaft as I don’t want to compromise it

Thats what i was thinking, id be afraid to put a lot of weight on the shaft i play in my driver. So time you bought another shaft and this, then you right back up in the money

Oh yeah I definitely don't have it on my gamer shaft. Got an old $20 shaft that I put it on. So it's like $60 all in. In my mind the weight isn't that much different then a normal driver head, as I'm gonna use it ~5% lighter or heavier than my head. Mine seems to fit in the TItleist adapter slots just like a head would too, so we'll see! Probably won't be able to report back until winter though as not gonna use it during season except maybe for some lefty swings.
