AI - Caddie and the rules?

AI represents an opportunity to bring the game closer to its roots rather than take it further away.....

How? 99% of current golfers in this world has never used a caddie so the "roots" are long gone. And I sincerely doubt how the "roots" would be cherished and brought back by having an instrument rolling by you on the course.

Since it would be very unlikely I would use a human caddie for anything other than basic yardage, why would I trust an "AI" piece of software written by 12 year olds that can't spell golf for anything more. A caddie for me would be a bag transporter and audible yardage book. I don't think I would trust an "AI" to do even that.

There may never be a need to change the RoG to accommodate the far future in this way. Certainly no compelling reason to do it now.

Of course.

the same “12 year olds” who write the code that makes rangefinders work will be the ones writing the code for ai caddies.

if you trust them now, why wouldn’t you trust them in the future?

Not likely.  Rangefinders typically use real time software or even a hardware only solution. Twelve year olds don't do that kind of stuff.  Too hard.

What happens when your AI device runs out of cell range?  Or has a power failure?  Do you get to wait or go find cell service?  While I think we aren't too far away from AI being able to do many of the caddie things, I don't see it being reliable enough to be a sure thing.  How many Tesla's shut down or drive you off the road or fail to recognize things?  Same with GPS car units.  I can easily foresee an AI caddie tell you to do something that is absolutely crazy.   I have enough problems with my wife beside me in the car.

Your wife driving or you..? If you drive, you are the one making decisions as you have the wheel. Same thing with a caddie, they do not make your decisions, they only suggest (unlike wifes, though..).

you must not be married.

I fail to understand the need of a caddie for an everyday golfer. If you cannot asnwer your own questions yourself and make a stroke it is advisable to start another hobby.

Afa professionals are concerned, they just have to pay the money of carry their clubs themselves, just like the rest of us mortals do.

Although AI is gaining territory it does not mean it has to be present everywhere.

I am 100% in favor of maintaining human caddies but I keep reading here that we need to accept music on the course and restricted flight balls and everything else because times change. I don’t see that eventually not impacting caddying too.

Serious question: Why is it OK for a caddy to tell me they think I should hit a 7 iron, but if my “My Caddie” app does that it is against the rules?

If that app uses information that has been gathered from previous rounds it would be ok as that is the information caddie uses as well. But what was suggested (afa I understood) was that the AI Caddie would use AI to "learn" during the round and adjust the data accordingly. That is not allowed as per R4.3.

again, attempting to understand here…

your caddy is watching every shot. is he not “learning” during the round?

so what’s the functional difference?

I bet no caddie can perform the mathematics required on site.

It is all explained in R4.3 and Clarifications. Do study them.

Because the Rules of Golf have always been written by privileged elites absolutely in love the idea of playing their golf accompanied by personal servants?

Just a theory.

what’s so different about it?
