Streamsong (Just Returned)

Just back from Streamsong.

I felt Red was the "best" course, but preferred playing the Blue ... then Black. The Chain was super cool, and I don't usually love short courses. As Ben Crenshaw said about it - "there's real golf out there (on The Chain)" not just a pitch and putt.

Lodging and food was all good for me.

I just booked for me and a buddy:

  • Monday 3/17 - arrival from Virginia via TPA. No tee times. We'll try once on site.
  • Tuesday 3/18 - Red 9:50. Maybe 36 depending on availability and our energy level 🙂
  • Wednesday 3/19 - Blue 12:35. Maybe The Chain between breakfast and Blue.
  • Thursday 3/20 - Black 8:23 then head to TPA for flight home

I got frustrated trying to coordinate tee times online. You can only search one course at a time, which makes it difficult across multiple days. Called the reservations number and gotta say, Kristen was tremendously helpful. She got us some tee times that I was not seeing on the website that make our trip better.

I need to make dinner reservations NOW.

Looking at visiting Streamsong for the first week in September. What are the chances of being able to get 36 holes in with a morning tee time of 930? Ideally would walk one round and then ride the other. Also does anyone know if they hide tee times on the booking site?

Chance of an uninterrupted 36 hole day is about 10%. There will almost always be rain/electricity that time of year. It’s hot as balls too. I would push it back to mid-October if possible.

I have to agree. This past year September heat index was still well over 100.  We had to cut back from 18 holes to 9 until into October.  There is zero shade at Streamsong.

Never been to SS. I booked 1 round on each course, and have time to play one more.  Black is intriguing to me.  I like massive greens complexes.  Double up on Black or any other opinions?

Preferences among the three courses vary pretty widely. Blue and Red are very similar to each other and are both almost universally liked . Opinions are more diverse about Black, which is different from the other two, partly due to the huge greens. If you have played and liked Old MacDonald at Bandon or Karoo at Cabot Citrus you'll probably like Black.

this is something I think people not used to the south/haven’t been to Streamsong don’t realize. It’s not just the heat it’s that you’re completely exposed to it for hours straight with no relenting. Not to mention the courses are covered with sand/dunes that radiate heat. Just standing in a bunker feels miserable.

First week in September is the only time I’m able to go on a golf trip. Streamsong pricing is cheap that time frame which is why I’m considering it. I created another topic asking for other destinations in the US. Would’ve done sand valley but they’re booked already. Any other destinations you all would suggest? Coming from DC area and want to stay east of the Rockies.

unfortunately it’s kind of late to be planning a 2025 golf trip, especially on a holiday weekend.

For Sand Valley you could always book day guest tee times and stay off site - there’s decent hotels about 15 min away, and get on their waitlist to see if there’s any cancellations for lodging.

Whistling Straits and Erin Hills are other great midwestern options.

From there I’d suggest some of the “next tier down” Midwestern spots - Arcadia Bluffs, Forest Dunes, or pick a city like Grand Rapids, Traverse, or Petoskey and build an itinerary around there.

yes I realize it. Just got the okay to do it from the wife. This is also why I'm leaning towards streamsong. Probably would do a night in orlando and play bay hill then make the drive to streamsong. 4 top courses would be a good trip.

I also very much doubt that all 4 Streamsong courses will be open that time of year.

Pricing is down in September because.. It's hot.  That's off season in Florida due to the heat.  Oct is basically the return to on season since that's about the time the temps drop from the ugly! 😊

I mean you’re not going to die. It’s just not exactly my idea of fun. I live in a similar climate and that’s the time of year I’m booking trips out of the south to get a reprieve from the heat.

I also can’t imagine doing 36 in 100+ heat index. I’m beat, sunburnt, and dehydrated after 18.

Thank you.  Reading through various threads it seems like Black is the enigma.  I have not been to Bandon or Citrus, but did a Fife trip and have played the links over there.  I like "use your imagination" greens with a multitude of options so I think I'll double up Black.  The Loop at Forest Dunes greens had that characteristic.

I live in the Deep South. I play (and carry) in 100+ heat.  September is the worse month in the south - it can be 100 every day.   But, if you take a cart, it's super easy. Just wear a good hat and drink a lot of water with electrolytes.

This is under rated but golf as the sun goes down in the summer in the south is a special experience.

I would do first tracks and then finish by noon. Then I would eat, shower, and nap and try to hit a 4pm tee time. It will be hot at the start but it will cool down as you get closer to sun down.

I organize a spring golf trip and we just returned from Streamsong. Wow we had a blast! 16 total guys and handicap index range 4-15. We played The Chain the afternoon we arrived then Black, Red, Blue, Red, Blue over the next 3 days. It was our first time playing the short course and we really enjoyed it. The greens need time to mature but that's just part of a new course. The greens were in good condition just really firm. What we really liked how you can make it long, short or vary the distances depending on your skill or where the match stands.

The big courses were in really great condition and all the greens ran true and ran a consistent ~10 (maybe 10.5) which is more than enough when you add grain, uphill/downhill, wind, etc. We also stayed upstairs (Clubhouse Experience) where we've stayed before but before they added the new concierge service. We generally knew what to expect but they exceeded our expectations. What a great concept that goes way beyond just taking care of your group when in the Players Den. They support you from the time you arrive to the time you leave including managing your luggage, moving golf bags, driving you in your own private shuttle, stocking the Players Den, prepping breakfast & snacks in the Players Den, bringing drinks on the course, cleaning shoes and more. It is way more than how they market it on their website and although the cost is not for everyone I can't recommend it enough. It's a special experience.

We mixed walking and riding and paid the carry rate to have one forecaddie per twosome vs one per foursome which enabled us to keep all of our caddies for the duration of our stay. The overall caddie experience was A+. I don't hesitate to say my experience was comparable to Bandon which is a high bar. When playing 36/day 2 out of 3 days majority of your interaction is with your caddies not the hotel or dining staff. I won't list names because I don't want to leave anyone out. We ate lunches and dinners at a combo of Pub 59, Bone Valley and Canyon Lake and the service was terrific with only one negative being half the group getting their entrees a little slower than usual but that was only one meal.

This thread started a few years ago when Streamsong was in transition and struggling with some aspects of their business. They were vocal saying they were making improvements to their team and systems and they backed that up. I booked the entire trip including the rooms, all golf tee times and all lunch and dinner reservations ~7-9 months in advance on one phone call and it couldn't have been easier. We had a few minor changes (not tee time related) leading up to our trip and they made last minute adjustments without a problem. We saw the new course being built which was pretty cool. Don't quote me but I think their master plan includes 6-8 courses and nearer term plans to build a new lodge. I was also told they're currently using only ~20% of their total land which is amazing.

Overall they delivered a great experience. I am excited to see what they make of it over the next 5-10 years! There is just so much potential ... could it evolve into something really special like the Bandon of the east?

That is dang fine to hear! It’s been 10 years since I’ve been there and now I want to go back. Bandon of the east is not realistic because of the climate 🙂 but I’m very pleased to hear of your experience and that the service issues documented at length on here are not chronic.

This was between rounds on a 36 hole day a decade ago. Toughest conditions I’ve ever played in!

Courses are better at Streamsong. Service and hospitality are better at Cabot. Dining is coming along at Cabot but they haven't gotten everything fully built out yet.

Def Streamsong. Cabot would be a nice 1 day trip on a streamsong trip IMO. Im not sure I’d want to go to citrus for like 3-4 days, think that would get old and there just wasn’t much infrastructure there to support that. 3 days at Streamsong and 1 at citrus would be pretty good IMO.

I only played Karoo and the layout was interesting but also a bit more repetitive than the Streamsong courses IMO. Played all 3 at Streamsong and think they have some nice differences between each other which make them more fun and distinct.
