Internal diameter in MMT Tapered Shafts?

Hello all! New to club building! Going to be building my first set of irons, pulling S300 from my Nike Vapor Pro irons (the muscle backs) and most likely put in MMT tapers. I understand that graphite shafts have a much smaller internal diameter than steel, making tip weights difficult to use at times. My question is, does anyone know what the internal diameter of MMT Tapered shafts is on the tip side? Thanks I’m advanced!

This is a 105 TX.  Looks to be about 3mm.  

 

I have bored them out with a drill bit to get a tip weight to fit.  Wasn't thrilled about it, but haven't had any issues so far.

The ID of the tip varies from shaft to shaft.  If you are using tip weights designed for graphite shafts you likely don't need to bore out the ID of the tip.  However, there are times that you might need to.  There is no danger in doing this as long as you aren't trying to bore them out to fit a standard steel tip weight in there.  That would cause some problems.

So when I get the shafts (ordered today), weights may fit some but not others?

I have personally used Accra, Steelfiber and most recently MMT 105s for my sets, and the MMT has the narrowest ID of them all.

 

For me, I used the brass graphite specific tip weights from Billy Bobs (they offer an even thinner one in 8g only, however I have not yet  used those). I didn't need them on the recent MMT build save the PW where I just went with some tape. If I was to use them in the MMTs, I would start with the narrow 8g ones from BillyBob to reduce the boring a smidge.

Some, all, or none - depending on specifically which graphite tip weight you try to use and the shaft.

 

Just need to realize that you may have to drill some of the ID's and it's really not a problem to do it - assuming it's done with care and patience.  If you do it right, It's just really epoxy that's being cleared out of the ID, you don't get to the graphite.   You shouldn't have to go any bigger than a 11/64" bit.

 

Not used the MMT's - but for example - with the heavier Recoil and steelfiber taper tip shafts,  the lead graphite tip weights from golfworks  generally go in fine - but the rubber/tungsten weights generally need the ID expanded.

 

Billy Bob's has two different diameter brass options available for graphite tip weights.   One needs the ID bored out a little, the other generally does not.

 

Also realize - for the brass tip weights - if the fit is too loose - it can cause rattling during the swing/impact.  Masking tape can be used to help pad the tip weight if it is a bit too loose.

I generally always need to bore out the ID of graphite shafts for the tip weights.  As mentioned it's not a big deal as you are removing a very small amount of material and what does get removed is essentially replaced with the OD of the tip weight itself sitting against the shaft walls...in essence it's actually stronger because the graphite shaft weights are solid.  And for reference I do use the smaller diameter brass weights from Billy Bob's and just cut them to desired weight/size.
