Move to Orlando- Fun Descent Public Courses Exist There?

OspreyCI

Recommended Posts

Thinking about taking a job in Orlando and maybe living a little south of it. Current Phoenix resident and have a pic of what as for great courses and good prices here in the valley. Easy to find an early tee time and varied prices.

Does that exist in Orlando or surrounding area? I am just not seeing it. Sorry, might not be looking at the right area. Never lived there and all new to me. Just a blue collar guy that does not mind paying $60 a round. Forgive me for any ignorance .

I don't know what courses you are playing in the PHX for $60 in the winter.  I've visited PHX/Scottsdale area dozens of time and of the 50+ courses I've played there, there aren't many good ones that are $60 or less during high season.

Much like PHX, courses in and around Orlando bump up their green fees in winter. There are more than 100 courses in the Orlando region at every price point and every level of quality. Orlando has eight months of  lower green fees and four months of higher green fees (early December to mid March). However, even during high season you can find decent courses with green fees in the $60 range if you live in (or are willing to drive to) an area away form the tourists (i.e. not close to Disney and Universal). As you travel northeast toward Daytona (e.g. Winter Park, Deltona, Deland, Debary etc.) there are many reasonably priced options You can also head southwest toward Winter Haven and Lakeland and also find many reasonably priced options.

Having said that, in the past two years green fees generally have increased. Courses that used to be $35 are now $55, and courses that were $60 are now closer to $80.

Off the top of my head here are some that are inexpensive even in winter that you can check out:

Winter Park 9

Highlands Reserve

Royal St Cloud

Big Cypress

White Heron

Remington

Kissimmee Bay

Deltona Club

Debary Country Club

Red Tail

Black Bear

Willowbrook

Cleveland Heights

Schalamar

Dubsdread

Cypresswood

Sandpiper

During the rest of the year, you'll have dozens of higher end courses to choose from

Really appreciate your time and the amount of information in your reply.  I don’t play in Scottsdale ever, just crazy expensive. I am local and find ways to play good cheaper courses in the winter. I have been playing Dobson Ranch for years now in a money game every weekend.

Anyway, the Orlando area sounds like Phoenix area. High is the winter and low in the summer. Glad to know there are normal to lower end priced courses in that area. Don’t want to move there and never be able to afford to play again. Thanks.

Yes, there are golf similarities. The biggest issue in Orlando area is traffic. I don't think PHX is as bad in this regard. The entire I-4 corridor is growing way too fast and the traffic is terrible (reminds me of L.A.... I-4 is bumper to bumper almost all day). The ORL region is big and  is growing without any master plan and inadequate arrangements for traffic and water. If you move here for work, make sure to carefully check out how you are going to travel from home to work. Good luck if your work involves driving. I love the community I moved to. It's close to a lot of reasonable golf.  But, if I was going to do it again, I might choose an area that might let me avoid some of the traffic jams

I would add Deer Island, Rio Pinar, Kings Ridge and Legends to sabram's list - all the others on his list are good options (except maybe Highlands reserve?  I have not played there in a while and supposedly they have finally cleaned it up?).  sabram has plenty of pics and reviews on other topics here - he is a wealth of info!

Also, he is spot on regarding the commutes and being careful about where to live and where you might have to drive to work.  Some areas have a "this is the only way to get in and out" feel and you have to sit in traffic to get to the main intersection for that part of town.  Same with the golf.  Some nice courses might be closer as the crow flies but may take twice as long to drive to, depending on the route.

Best of luck and ask more questions if needed.  I have lived here for 20 years and played a ton of golf in the last 5-6 years.

Highlands Reserve has been in good condition since they re-did the greens last year. I play there 5 or 6 times a year and really like it. After the first three holes it is really fun with lots of elevation change . Its different than many of the typical Florida style courses with wide fairways and no water in play.

You guys have been very helpful…getting me kinda itchy to go there. Maybe the job opportunity will work out.

Love AZ and love teeing off at 5am right now. I will miss that for sure. Could be fun living in or near that area. Sounds like some very good golf.

When you say may live a little south, how far South or even east of Orlando are you looking?

I might have some other rec's for you FWIW I live about 35-45 min for the airport pending traffic south and east of it.

Well…. Sorry to waste of your time. Looks like I won’t be moving to Orlando after all. Job did not work out in the end. Appreciate everyone’s help. Maybe something will come up there in the future.

On the bright side, you didn't have to move to Orlando.
