Interesting story.  Thanks for sharing.

“I figured out two things during this time off: I’m way too young to retire, and I’m unemployable,” Snedeker laughed.

That's about 90% of this board.

Are you saying that having over 5,000 posts on GolfWRX isn't a lifeskill that employers look for?

Fascinating!

But can anyone explain what the actual ailment was? The article doesn't really say. It gives the technical name for the procedure, but what caused the need? Was this something genetic? Degenerative? Golf-related?

I also notice that in relation to another thread, Snedeker still loves golf. I think that's awesome!

Best wishes to a continued full recovery, not just from surgery, but from the long golf sabbath and a return to a full, successful PGA schedule!

I read it twice and didn't see what the actual ailment was either.  I really had to slow down reading when it got around to the hip immobility part.  I was confused as I thought it was a sternum related surgery.

Best I can tell they took bone from his hip (not sure if that is pelvis/ilium or femoral head area) and put some in his chest area, thus hip immobility and chest pain.

I would love to see Snedeker back on the tour again.  I was wondering where he was the last few years.

Solid player and a solid man.

Seemed from the article that a bone graft into chest cartilage was used as an anchor site for the screws holding a plate to stabilize the sternum. Poorly written, so just gleaning what I can, but seems like the bone maybe allowed for a place to slot the screws while minimizing the risk of infection. Not really clear why he was having pain there exactly.

probably has both medical exemptions as well as some extra from winning in the last decade. no card as he was 182 last year in fedex

Looks like he's on a minor medical exemption. He's got 4 weeks to make x amount to keep his card I'd assume

So the manubrium is the upper part of the sternum where your collar bone and 1st rib attach. Apparently Snedeker had chronic instability and inflammation in one or maybe both of those attachments, which caused him a lot of pain and sidelined him for extended periods of time during his career. Injury to that area is usually caused by blunt force trauma, but for Brandt it seems that golf, for whatever reason, caused his injury.  It sounds like bone was harvested most likely from his pelvis just above his hip (a fairly common location for bone graft harvesting) and used in the stabilization of the manubrium joint(s).  Here's hoping it's a success.

Thanks for the explanation.

He needs to earn roughly 144 FEC points in 4 events to regain full status. Or roughly 30 FEC points to regain conditional status.

He should be able to do that. Brandt should tee it up at the JDC and 3M lol

Easier said than done. Especially coming back from a pretty serious injury. His priority ranking being on a minor medical extension makes it difficult to get into events. I'm certain he will play wherever he gets a sponsor exemption. Like The Memorial this week. I hope he gets his full playing privileges back. Would like to see him get a 10th PGA Tour win.

Cheers for info smoky, I was curious myself. Sneds does seem to be injury prone, likely a genetic/hereditary predisposition to something. All the way back in 2013 he spoke about both hip and rib problems, the former being something he's had surgery to address. His wiki page mentions a type "adynamic bone disease" which seems to be some sort of bone regeneration disorder that seems like it can be managed but not cured. His rib issues are likely just a progression of that, so for his sake I hope this surgery helps and the management of the condition (if that is what he has) gives him more years on tour.

I was relieved too.  As you probably know, the numbers were against him.  History has shown a career ending injury is "usually enough" for a PGA spouse to hit the road.

Just an FYI:  2023 metrics show roughly 6.3 of 10 PGA marriages are "in rough shape", up 120 BPS from 2022.
