Eligibility for a Major

How are so many of these no name golfers, no disrespect get to play in the U.S. Open. Look at the Topic of Tour and Pre release Equipment.  All of these names with WITB for the U.S. Open of so many people who I'm sure are decent golfers but seriously when Sergio has to re qualify just to be able to play in this tournament. Look at all the other PGA players who have played well enough to make a  comfortable living but not a big Major winner who are not eligible to play. This is Tour talk so I just thought this was the place to post this. Ok I know Sergio is a LIV player but I'd rather see more popular golfer playing in a tournament who has a chance to win or at least make a good showing.

156 total.....they left spots for like 60 from the qualifying process in which you have to be 1.4 hdcp or better  ..... over 10k applicants went through to first stage .....not sure how many advanced to 2nd stage .....then you have the exempt list which can be found on the USGA site. Like Phil is here due to his 2021 PGA win.....

I think they should add a category for all major winners who are in the top 156 of the OWGR. (Looking at the current ranking, I count 5 major winners ranked 61 to 156- Phil, DJ, Bryson, Danny Willet and Lucas Glover).

Here's a full list of exempt categories. Are there any you would omit?

  • F-1. Winners of the U.S. Open Championship the last 10 years (2013-22)
  • F-2. From the 2022 U.S. Open Championship, the 10 lowest scorers and anyone tying for 10th place
  • F-3. Winner of the 2022 U.S. Senior Open Championship
  • F-4. Winner of the 2022 U.S. Amateur Championship
  • F-5. Winners of the 2022 U.S. Junior Amateur and U.S. Mid-Amateur Championships, and the 2022 U.S. Amateur runner-up (must be an amateur)
  • F-6. Winners of the Masters Tournament (2019-2023)
  • F-7. Winners of the PGA Championship (2018-2023)
  • F-8. Winners of The Open Championship, conducted by The R&A (2018-2022)
  • F-9. Winners of The Players Championship (2021-2023)
  • F-10. Winner of the 2022 European Tour BMW PGA Championship
  • *F-11. Those players who qualified and were eligible for the season-ending 2022 Tour Championship
  • F-12.  Multiple winners of PGA Tour events that award a full-point allocation for the FedExCup, from the conclusion of the 2022 U.S. Open (June 16-19) to the initiation of the 2023 U.S. Open
  • *F-13. The top five players in the 2022-23 FedExCup standings as of May 22, 2023, who are not otherwise exempt
  • *F-14. The points leader from the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour season using combined points earned on the Korn Ferry Tour Regular Season Points List and points earned in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals

  • **F-16. The top player on the 2023 Race to Dubai Rankings as of May 22, 2023, who is not otherwise exempt
  • **F-17. The top two finishers from the 2023 DP World Tour U.S. Open Qualifying Series, who are not otherwise exempt
  • F-18. Winner of the 2022 Amateur Championship, conducted by The R&A (must be an amateur)
  • F-19. Winner of the 2022 Mark H. McCormack Medal (Men’s World Amateur Golf Ranking) (must be an amateur)
  • F-20. Winner of the 2023 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship (must be an amateur)

  • F-23. From the current Official World Golf Ranking, the top 60 point leaders and ties as of June 12, 2023 (if not previously exempt)
  • F-24. Special exemptions selected by the USGA

*For Exemptions F-11, F-13 and F-14, players must be considered eligible per PGA Tour regulations at the time the exemption is determined to qualify for the exemption.

**For Exemptions F-15, F-16 and F-17, players must be in DP World Tour membership at the time the exemption is determined to qualify for the exemption.

Or The Masters with a bunch of elderly winners from 30 years ago in a limited field.

Those two above = fake majors.

Manners, wth?

Compromised fields don't equal real majors no matter the sentimentality.

Only 2 proper majors: The open and the US open.

The Masters & PGA championship should be designated events, no more.

That being said, I love watching The Masters.

I'm legitimately not sure if this is serious, but hopefully it's pretty obvious that the organization hosting to the event gets to make the rules. In case of the PGA, they are certainly free to make exemptions for some of their own members. In case of Augusta, they can do whatever the ****ing hell they want with the geezers as well.

You really don't know or don't have 3 minutes to Google and see what the qualification process is for the U.S. Open?  Been pretty much the same forever.

And why whine about Sergio?  Like anyone else (it's an Open), if he doesn't meet the exemption categories he has to go qualify --- just like some Tour pros will try qualifying for The Open Championship, but of course easier for Sergio since he lives in the U.S.

Maybe next year it will there will be an exemption category for the ten "most popular" golfers who aren't exempt.

Excuse me who is whining as I just threw Sergio's name out there OK. Thats great if its been the same forever as I didn't know as I was just asking.  Thank You SkiSchoolPro as he did an awesome job and posted the list of qualifying exemptions for the U.S. OPEN.

Anyone who doesn't get in the field should, in the words or Rory, just play better. The top tier guys / best players in the world qualify. Everyone else has a chance to qualify, no one is locked out. If you don't make it through the qualifiers then that's on the player - they were beaten by the guys who did make it.

Looking at big names that didn't make it this year I see mostly older guys in decline and guys having rough stretches (i.e. Webb Simpson). I'm a Webb fan, but given his form I'll take the guys that beat him in the qualifier over him right now.

Looking at the LIV guys that missed, it's really only Gooch and possibly HV3 that seem like players who would have made it without qualifying if they were still on tour. Sergio, Poulter, Leishman, McDowell, etc. aren't top tier guys anymore. Losing those two guys doesn't really change much for me - esp. knowing they had a chance and didn't get it done.

You’re making his point. Instead of coming here to complain about something you didn’t know/understand on how a bunch of no names and how they are eligible, you could have taken that same amount of time and searched us open qualifications and found out them, based on that could have determined if you need to make a thread complaining about a bunch of no names in a major and why popular golfers had to qualify

The no names were not mentioned out of no disrespect to them as I was just asking not complaining, geez sorry I started such a controversial issue. There is a difference between expressing your opinion and being rude. In order for you to insult me I would have to value your opinion. Nice try though.

Should have an exemption for random wrxer 😁🤣

They should pick one person at random from GHIN and give them an exemption to the US Open.  You get 155 of the best players and then one guy (or gal) with a 15.4 index on their home course at 6000 yards.

Now THAT would be entertainment!

If you take the masters away from the us south , you alienate half ( or more) the countries golf population. We rarely get a us open.  Or pga. And if we do it’s at damn pinehurst. Yuck. The us open prefers to stay in more affluent locales under the excuse of “ mmmm it’s hot in the south “.

That's interesting, I didn't realise that.

I'm not saying don't play the Masters, just that it shouldn't be a major with its current format. To me, its a quirky, entertaining invitational played on a visually beautiful course but with a small, compromised field.

Of course as a start they could always change the field composition to exclude old past winners who are no longer competitive - the par 3 event and the dinner should be fine for them, there's the tradition and their places in the event can be given to players that have the ability to contend. Then increase the field size.

Sort of tangential to topic.

If a player wins two majors in one year does it double the exemptions or is it still just five years?

No double/triple/quad dipping (ask Tiger). Simplest answer is 5 years for the other 3 majors. However it depends on what major a player wins. I'll try my best to summarize by major won.

A) The Masters - (sort of) Lifetime Masters invite. 5 years for the other 3 majors.

B) PGA Championship - Lifetime invite to age limit for the PGA Championship. 5 years for the other 3 majors.

C) US Open - 10 year exemption into the US Open. 5 years for the other 3 majors. No "lifetime" invite to the US Open like the PGA, Masters and Open Championship'.

D) Open Championship - Lifetime Exemption to age limit for the Open Championship. 5 years for the other 3 majors.

That's the easiest/simplest level of explanation. Winning another major within a current 5/10 year window could reset the 5/10 year windows going forward.
