club suggestions

i dont follow club trends much these days. i have some issues on the top of my bag i am wanting opinions on.

 

i have a mental block about hitting woods off a tee other than driver. im a scratch golfer, 115ish swing speed. i have a ts2 7 wood at 20 degrees of loft, i hit good off the deck into greens that goes about 240 in the air, but i dont hit it off the tee as im terrified of skying it since it has a shallow face.

 

i am looking for a club for off the tee that would sit behind my driver that i dont fear going left. i was thinking some sort of driving iron, the stealth driving hybrid, or a deep faced hybrid that can be setup anti left. my miss is a toe shot that over hooks.

 

im also looking for a driving iron or hybrid type club that would carry in the 225 range sitting behind my 7 wood, that has similar characteristics with deep face and anti left.

 

i prefer stout light weight graphite shafts.

 

 

i also have a 60 degree mack daddy full face grooved wedge that i like. are there any companies making a good full groove faced wedge at 50ish and 55ish degrees?

Ping, titleist, or PXG hybrid might be worth taking a look at as they can be set flat (for anti left). The PXG is probably the cheapest price wise if you go for the prior generation and you can set the weights to a very fade/open biased setting. Shafts, something like a HZDUS black 80x or the KBS prototype 85x in it.

If not, pretty much any driving iron, by the sounds of it though, it’s going to be difficult to hit a driving iron or hybrid shorter than the 7 wood, but maybe try something with 22, 23, 24 degrees of loft. This is probably something you need to get fit for.

 

wedge wise, I can only think of the PXG sugar daddy II right now as full face wedge options. They are mad expensive but some of the best wedges I’ve ever used.

You’ve stated that you hit your 7-wood well off of the deck and have a carry yardage of 240. Why not hit it off of the deck when using it on any tee box? You can give yourself the perfect lie and have at it.

Logically yes that makes sense, but the golf mental demons are hard to defeat

TM BRNR for the slot between driver and 7W? Hittable off the deck but deep faced and clearly intended as tee club. Club behind the 7W seems like obvious candidate for whatever lofted iron hits the distance gap. Not sure why you would bother with a hybrid at all when you have the swing speed you do and the fear of the miss left.

Yeah I said I did not recommend the hybrid but if he does want to go that route I second the PXG recommendation as I remember the head feeling very deep and blocky at address.

Callaway UW. The stock shaft should suit you. Has a minimal fade bias, hard to pull in the standard head / shaft combination. Exists in 17, 19, or 22.

Agree with Callaway UW.  Hard to hit left for me unless I actively try.  May not have "deep" face though.

Years ago, I had a similar problem with early Tour Edge Bazooka Beta-Ti low-profile fairways: a 3W at 14* and a 5W at 19*. Great clubs off fairway or out of light rough, but iffy off a tee due to pop-ups.

 

Solution: When using for tee shots, I would fluff up the grass a bit with the club and set the ball atop the light fluff. This generally produced a medium shot that ran out well, unless I hit a cut into a par 3.

 

(I know that dozens of magazine golf tips say always use a tee, but this is one exception.) 

 

Long term: I have since avoided low-profile fairway woods.
