Experimenting with Jumbomax grips

I think they don't work for people with normal swing soeed. If you swing fast like Bryson, your hands are turning over very quickly. Jumbo grips reduce that. Its like how his new convex irons reduce dispersion. Only someone with high speed will see that benefit in an iron. We all have convex driver faces because we swing it faster.

 

Power to you, but if you cant swing a 7 iron 100mph, you probably will leave the face open too much.

I think that's an old thought that isn't really all that accurate — the idea that thicker grips "limit your release."

 

We've filmed with super high-speed cameras players hitting oversized grips, junior grips, and even the bare shaft and… the closure rates of the clubhead and the hands was almost the same. And by that I mean that they were basically all the same, without any slope to the lines, so I'm not saying that thicker grips got only 50 RPMs slower each time we went up in size or something. They bounced up and down slightly from size to size but were all pretty close to the average.

I am glad data exist behind my anecdote. 🙂 I am no more or less prone to a push or a left going left hook. But what I absolutely am less prone to is fatigue. I can play more often without my R arm feeling like it weighs 300 lb since I went to the Jmax grips, and for a guy with one arm to be able to play 4x / week before my body says 🛑, I’ll take it!

Yes.

 

Except in extreme cases, I think grip size is mostly about comfort, not shot shape or how the "release" is affected.

TOTAL MYTH.

 

Grip size has NOTHING to do with how fast you turn your hands over or how fast or slow you swing a club.

 

I definitely have "normal" swing speed and I've been playing the JMX Ultralight XL's for 10 years or so.

My normal golf shot is a slight draw. When I switched to the JumboMax Ultralite grips, I was comfortable with them right away and I still hit with a slight draw.

So I got sucked into this (and other) threads and bought a couple of gigantic grips. Specifically, a JM UL large and a JM Str8 XL. I can't swing right now due to an injury, but I can chip, so I installed the JM UL on my lob wedge to see how it was to chip with. Well my first impression: I had clown shoe equivalent of of golf grips 🙄. And while it seemed ridiculous at first, once I started chipping with it was fine. It was interesting because I discovered there are certain chips/pitches I play with a lot of wrist action, and these shots were different with the clown shoe grips. I could still hit the shots, but they were just different feeling.

 

I am going to installed the Str8 grip on my driver and see how that goes once I can swing again.

 

FWIW, I think this whole idea that big grips inhibit wrist action is ridiculous. Look at tennis players: their grips are huge compared to golfers, and they have a ton more wrist action than golfers do. JMHO (but I'm right lol!!!).

Interested in these grips. Been researching but cant seem to find which size I should start with I have an extra driver id like to try it on and see if I like it! I am extremely fast player 130+ CHS and am prone to the left miss. I also hold the golf club in my palm and wear out gloves like crazy (Former baseball player). Any ideas of where to start for size wise I have hit the XLs and didnt really like how big they were was thinking of starting at small?

I have the medium Str8 Tech on my driver (it's the less tapered grip) and it is fantastic, I wear a medium/large glove for reference. I have found that the medium size really helps keep my forearms more relaxed. I'm going to put the Str8 Tech Ultralites on my irons in a week or so.

Just ordered one JMX Zen Lite in Small just one to see if I like it! Will try it on a driver and see if I like it then maybe make the change! Just an experiment!

I tried several of the JumboMax grips, and decided against putting them on all my clubs. I liked the grips, but I didn't see a significant performance difference, and I would have had to buy a couple new golf bags to accommodate the large grips. Between the cost of the grips and the bags, it would have cost $700-$800, and I just didn't feel it was worth it.

 

However, next time I regrip, I may to go to a slightly larger grip (I use mid-size now).
