Fairway wood recommendation

YankeesChiefsMizzou

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Looking for suggestions on a fairway wood. Typically struggle to hit them well so want something forgiving. I have a draw biased swing so nothing with too much built in draw bias. Iron swing speed is ~90. Have tried the Sim 2 Ti, sim max, and G425 max and haven't been satisfied with these.

Thinking maybe the Rogue max or the PXG XF? Let me know your thoughts.

Every now and then I hit some used clubs at PGATSS.
Based on that if I were to but anything it would be a Mavrik 5 wood.
I found it forgiving, easy to launch and long.

Really liking my 3HL rogue st. I’ve got a natural draw as well and I can open it up to hit a high soft shot or a long penetrating draw. Good prices on cpo as well

This one, love mine as well.

Tour Edge C722. It has all the premium technology in an affordable package. I currently have a 5 wood turned down to 17.25 degrees and it’s stupid long and easy to hit while sitting slightly open to limit the draw bias. Also really recommend their C721 and E722 hybrids which are basically mini fairways.

Just a heads up if you’re considering the Rogue ST max, it has a semi draw bias. If you want no bias at all, you may look at the Rogue ST LS.

Throughout the past, my 3W has also given me my fair share of struggles. However, I have been really impressed with the Rogue ST. That’s where my recommendation would be.

I use a 20-year old Cleveland Quadpro that is like a howitzer cannon.  They're cheap at many used golf places now.

Another nod to the Tour Edge, all their fairways are good. I really like my E722 3HL 4 wood and 7 wood set up.

Ping fairway woods let you set them to the flat setting which should help fight your draw. I'd try the G430's a try with the adapter set to flat

I picked up a g430 max 3 wood  a few weeks ago, been playing a 410 lst.  The 430 just wants to go left to left. I put in on the flat settings, hardly any difference.  Then added lead tape to the toe, marginally better but still hit hooks.

This past weekend tried my buddy's paradym triple diamond 3w.  Laser beam rockets dead straight, and could fade it at will.  Next day went in an ordered one for myself.

The 430 max is hook biased, Ping says so themselves.

I think the SFT is their draw biased vs the max.

I haven’t had a hook issue with my 5 wood. Also playing 1° flat at 42”.

It’s interesting you point it out though because during fitting for my 5 wood with nearly all the stock shafts I was pulling the ball left (more than I like to see).

Out of curiosity what shaft did you go with in the paradym TD vs your G430? The standard paradym was also on my shortlist when I was shopping woods but wanted adjustability that the paradym doesn’t have in the 5 wood.

SFT is the extreme draw biased head.  The stock 430 head is also slightly draw biased, I can't play anything that is draw biased, I'll hit 30-40 yard plus hooks.

I hit both with the Kai'li White 70 stiff.

Ping is having success on tour with the 430 max fairways, but say they have to add 4-8 grams of hot melt in the toe for those guys as the head is "so easy to turn over".

Depends on what you are expecting out of your fairway wood I think. But if you want something stupid easy to hit off the ground that is akin to a decent 4 wood, the Cleveland Halo HyWood 3+ is really worth a look. So easy to get up and so straight and the carry distance is very good too.

The hy-wood is also on my radar, if I can find a good deal on one (left-handed).  I have the original Cleveland Halo and they are like cash-money nearly every time I hit a ball with it.  High, straight, dependable and I've seen no reason to change from the 22* and the 25* that I own.  With the Hy-Wood, I've read great things about it and wonder if it would knock my 19* Cleveland Quadpro out of the bag as an upgrade?

Here is where I read about the tour success of the G430 max FWs on tour.   Really surprised how many must be in play:

https://golf.com/gear/fairway-woods/ping-g430-max-fairway-wood-wall/

If your miss in not left, it is probably a great option, but for someone like me, it is not.....

Key points:

“Initially it went so high and was so easy to turn over we were slightly concerned,” Oates continued, “but we’ve found a nice sweet spot.”

The “sweet spot” he’s referencing is a build that’s increasing G430 Max’s usage on Tour, especially with 5- and 7-wood builds. To combat the stock shot shape and spin rate, Oates and team have been adding 4-8 grams of hot melt to the toe and moving the loft sleeve to the “Small Minus” setting to optimize launch and spin for the best players in the world.

The build has become so popular, in fact, it’s used by more than half of the pros currently playing G430 Max. During the John Deere Classic, G430 Max was the most played fairway wood in the field for a fourth straight week, a sign that Max’s popularity isn’t an aberration but a full-blow trend this season.

In theory, it would be the lowest launching (most penetrating flight) of the Rogue ST line. However, if you swing an iron 90mph then I think you've got the gun powder to get the ball up. Just a matter of squaring it up which I certainly acknowledge is easier said than done!

Another option would be the Paradym (not Paradym X and not Paradym Triple Diamond) as this particular model is classified as a high launch and has neutral flight bias. Sounds like this may check more boxes of what you're looking for.

Consider a 4W. Shorter shaft for control, extra loft to improve launch.

Also, some Ping players do both: downloft the 17.5* 5W to 16.5* to get a shorter-shafted 4W.
