Question for Jumbomax users

skraly

Recommended Posts

So, I got curious after reading some comments about Jumbomax grips and decided to try a couple on my warm up clubs, a 6 and a PW.  Both full swing clubs.  I went to the Jumbomax site and used their recommendation as to the size of grip I should get.  I bought two and installed them.  I was favorably impressed enough to buy a full set of Jumbomax Ultralites for a 5-GW set of irons.  After about 4 rounds I'm thinking I really like them.  For what ever reason they have improved my iron striking.  I haven't changed my grip or my swing pattern at all.  My only guess is that I seem to now take a naturally lighter grip on the club.  I never thought of myself as having a very firm grip.  I don't typically wear out my golf glove as I seen done my some who have a very firm grip.  But for whatever reason they seem to be working well for me right now.

My question has to do with the total set make-up.  Are you using the same size Jumbomax on all clubs?  Right now I just have them on my full swing irons.  My woods and wedges still have the mid-sized grip with 4 extra wraps that I've been using for some time.  Interestingly, going back and forth from the mid-size to the Jumbomax doesn't seem to affect my ball striking.  So I'm wondering if maybe one size smaller on my woods and wedges might not be just right.

I'm leaning toward trying the Zen lites with the next set.  I think I might like the firmer feel even better.  I've always used corded grips and the Ultralites feel just a little soft to me.

Anyway just curious what others have tried or are doing with the Jumbomax grips.

I've been using the Jumbomax Ultralight XL's on ALL my clubs for the last 8 years. Tried the Zen Lights a couple of times for a short stint but that was it. Just like the JMX Ultralights better. I hold the club in the palms of my hand and it is so much more comfortable.

FOR ME it is way easier to control the clubface with these and I actually picked up about 5-8 yards throughout the bag when I first switched to them.

Just an FYI, I don't wear a glove but if I did it would be a large.

I will echo @SEP1006.  Not sure when I started them, but probably four years or so.  I will never go back. When I get a new club, I immediately remove the stock grip and change it.

As for size I wear a ML glove were I to wear one.  I don't have sweaty hands and so have no need for one even in the hottest conditions.

I have Tour LG on everything -- driver down to wedges.  I tried the no taper ones and liked them but they were mediums.  Next time I buy I will try the larger size (they are not available in all sizes, i think).  I have tried the ultralight ones and didn't like them.  It think it is the texture actually.

I recently put Jumbomax Ultralight Medium on my driver.
For reference I have midsize on my woods and wedges and standard size on my irons.
After 1 range session I kinda liked the Jumbomax but almost took off the grip. It felt weird but I was seeing tighter dispersion.

I decided to play a few rounds with the JM UL grips and have been so happy, I’ve never been so confident hitting drives. The grips truly did eliminate the left side. It also lets me bow the lead wrist more aggressively so the right miss has also been reigned in but with no fear of a pull or a snap hook. It’s honestly incredible.

I have no issue having a Jumbomax on my driver and not my other clubs.
I don’t think I’ll be putting Jumbomax on any of my other clubs… although if I get bored I may put a smaller sized JM on my woods and hybrid.

The longer the club the more I like a big grip, as the clubs get shorter, a smaller grip seems more comfortable.

I’m not planning on putting Jumbomax on my irons but I did purchase some 1/8” Oversized for my irons. I won’t go beyond midsize for wedges.

Put them on all your clubs, you won't regret it. Gives you so much more control of the club face. Also don't know how you hold the grip But I hold them in the palms ( JMX Ultralight XL's ) of my hand with a interlock grip.

Tried a Ultralite Medium on driver and it was just a little too big, moved down to a Small and have had my best stretch of driving the ball in a long time.

The rest of my set was Golf Pride CP2 Midsize and they just felt too small after hitting driver so I tried Extra Small on a couple other clubs and liked it so I regripped the rest of my set with that and so far so good.

I wear a Cadet ML glove and my normal flight is a draw with the big left miss lurking.  I now hit mostly little draws to slight fades with the biggest miss being a straight block right.

Ive played jumbomax in my driver for the past 4 or 5 seasons now. I started from the ultralites in L and now have the ultralites str8 taper in XL and now M.

I go GP CP2 midsize with like 4 wraps in irons and whatver stock grip in wedges just built up large up to 10 wraps depending. Woods are similar to irons. I am actually okay with not having jumbomax throughout my set.

I cant see myself ever going back to regular grips in my driver. It just feels natural and very secure swinging it. The only bad part is trying out drivers whether it be others or at a store it throws me off for a bit. Plus, I'll always be hesitant to pay for a driver fitting cause they all have standard regular grips in their fitting matrix shafts.

Good point on the fitting aspect.  I hadn’t thought of that.  So many options these days👍

I just switched to Jumbomax Ultralight XS, that’s the size the website suggested for me. I’m getting used to them and like them so far since I been dealing with hand pain recently. I am thinking of trying an XL size because most pros and people who switches to Jumbomax use this size.

What can I expect? I’m sold on the idea of thick grips since all other “racket” type sports use huge grips but I don’t know why people go for XL size even though it’s not what the website fitting suggests

I've used the XL size Ultralights on all my clubs for the past 2 to 3 years.  I'll never go back to a regular grip.  I like the size for a lighter grip pressure, less torque on mishits and the softer feel.  I have arthritis in my hands and the XL soft grips help a lot!  I tried the Tour XL model but they are too heavy.  They weigh twice as much as the Ultralights  Ultralights weigh the same 55g as a regular grip. They were not as soft either.

Played today first time w/ some Ultralight Str8 taper in Medium, which based on the diameter information online is equivalent to either the S or US in tapered I can't remember off the top. Felt amazing for the BRNR mini but kind of big for the irons. No terrible shots but for irons I learned towards the end for some reason I was often short and/or right because I wasn't accelerating through my swing for whatever reason, I think I was swinging too smooth/soft. So far alright will see how I like em over the season.

Had these on my driver for 2 years and just switched to the irons/wedges this year and am loving it. Best way for me to describe the change is with normal grips you can use your hands to compensate a bit for bad mechanics but the larger grips helped me take my hands out of the swing forcing me to use my body to make a good swing. This led to some issues at  first(right miss)but now they are awesome and I have never been more consistent with my ball striking.

Old post. But since it’s been revived maybe someone can answer.
Are the Zen lites the firmest  of the Jmax grips?  Or are the tour grips firmer?

I’m still playing JM UL medium on driver.
I am playing corded oversize on everything else with two wraps on lead hand. I like the firmness.

If I could move to a small or x small in a firmer Jmax on the driver I think I’d be slightly happier. Then I’d consider trying on other clubs.

I'm running XL St8techs on all of my irons and it made a huge difference to my swing by lightening up the grip on my low hand. even using oversized with wraps it still used to feel like i was only wrapping half a finger around it and so i was overgripping to buggery

Yes the Zen Lites are the firmest. Think of them as Jumbo Lamkin grip.

Zen lites are the firmest and the exterior is rubber that has many small voids so it's easy to feel like you've got great traction with the grip (somewhat the same principle for sniping snow tires).  I've tried all the grips except for the S,R8 and I like the Zen lites the best.

However I've found that all Jumbomax grips can make a significant change on swing weight.  I've gone back to the Ultralites because I prefer a heavier swing weight and would rather not add additional weight to the club.  The grip weights vary quite a bit.  I use UL Smalls on all my clubs.  A UL Small is 48g, Zen small is 60g (2-3 reduction of SW) and a Small Tour is 99g (about 8 SW reduction from the UL).  If you like a lighter SW the heavier grips will give you that.  I like the the feel of a D4, so the UL's are my best option.

I picked up a few Zen lites X-small. They do seem nice and firm but they were a touch smaller than I was looking for. I might put them on my wedges.

They are pretty much the same size as my current oversized grips but much lighter. I am not at all sensitive to the swing weight changes that come from grips. If anything a heavier grip just makes the club feel like it has more heft.

Ive got a small and the medium zen lite on the way. Do you find the zen lite and the ultralite to be the same diameter size for size? I think small is going to be the ideal size for me.

Gotta say, very impressed with the Zen Lite.
X small is actually a really nice size.
Size and firmness for the weight is impressive. I put these on my 54 & 58. The reduced taper is nice on the wedges.

To the OP: I play corded grips too and that’s why I never considered j-max on my irons. But the firmness of the zen lites might change my mind. Not sure about the reduced taper though. I play oversized with two wraps on the left hand and no tape under the right hand)

OP: I’m likewise not bothered with different grip size. I have medium JM UL on my driver, I’m going to test small on my woods, and can’t see myself going bigger than x-small on my irons (if I were to change from oversized corded on my irons)IMG_1503.jpeg.4ab3aaabf516f3ad4d9605219ee56cc6.jpegIMG_1504.jpeg.f6b03a9cfdb14ac85a42abc3a2505819.jpegIMG_1501.jpeg.b78ea9159821429c321fb19636df2156.jpegIMG_1502.jpeg.3642fe5bd6404f6f694b7331ee9c037a.jpeg
