Old Ping Putters

Recommended Posts

I've been on the 2 putt train last 2 weeks with the Pal + lead tape. I know some people have the view the Pal is best of fast greens BUT Its helping me on my home course which is WICKED slow greens. I can really hit it and feel the distance control. I love it, nothing against new putter's but kicking a** with something you got under $50 in rocks.  I want to try my Zing more but I'm having to much fun with the Pal for now.

Long shot but does anyone have one of these grips? After learning my 69-73 Anser isn’t valuable I decided it would be better lengthened to a length I want than leave it completely original. Of course the old dry grip didn’t come off in useable condition. I’ve yet to check if these were ever reproduced. I put the all black PING man on my 1A and love that but thought I’d ask before I go that route.?

Dug deep and lo and behold look what I found. Still kind of soft, a few seconds with some fine sandpaper and it's almost good as new. PM me if you want it. I'll take it easy on you. Maybe a trade.

I have two new ones and I also have a Golf Pride Informer that is still on a shaft.

Ping used these on early Scottsdales and on Redwoods.

Just to let ya'll Ping fans know...I'll be putting up on the fb marketplace site, the Ping putters shown....any interest, PM me & let me know.

fyi - all the 85029 zip codes are on the bottom not the side (something my Elder Pro, Odell, said were the earlier models) if that makes any difference to anyone.

Ping:p#1.jpg

bottom to top:
AYD - 85020; N-ECHO - 85029; Karsten3 - 85029; PAL2 - 85068; PAL - 85020; ZING - 85020; Y-BLADE - 85029

Ping:p#2.jpg

two KUSHIN - both 85029

Ping:p#3.jpg

RITE IN - 85020; RITE IN5 - 85020, shaft curved (see below)

Ping:p#4.jpg

Ping:p#5.jpg

looks like 1/2 a golf ball would fit in....anyone ever play one of these?

Ping:p#6.jpg

yup, the "butterfly" or the "butt" putters: B62 - 85068; JB5 - 85068

Ping:p#7.jpg

Ping:p#8.jpg

The JB5 is the longer of the two.

I've kept ahold of 4 other Ping putters: Ball-Namic b-67 85029, Zero4 pat pending 85020 & two Anser putters.
The Anser putters are interesting, they have different patent numbers, different zip codes & one has the 'r' trademark near the A of Anser & the other doesn't.

Sure wish I could find that Ping book mentioned on another site (mention of which would cause either this post not to post or be held up for awhile)

All nice putters.  On your Ansers, if they are Phoenix stamps then they're great putters like all Ansers but not hugely collectible - the exception would be an 85029 zip and sloped bumpers ('dalehead' shape) / KARSTEN CO stamp.  Without the 'R' on the bumper indicates an early Phoenix.

They are both Phoenix stamped & have KARSTEN MFG CO...tho, the 85020 has a P.O.9006 & may have a very faint 'r' on it also (had to get into direct sunlight). The 85029 has no P.O. #. Neither are the "dalehead" (I did have a LH dalehead that I gifted to my Brother-in-law a couple of years back)
I would say, from info already put up on another posting, that the 020 is the later Anser than the 029..

I have no idea what mine is worth. I have no idea its origin. I have no idea about anything other than when I use it I am confident.

If I found out it was some super rare protype worth $10K I would still game it. And if someone said it's worth more as scrap than as a putter, I'd still game it.

This game is crazy how certain things we do are so irrational, but I'm willing to bet a lot of us work jobs where it's all about dollars, returns, etc. We'd make completely different decisions if it was a P&L or cash flow statement. However when it comes to my putter, I'll go bankrupt before parting with it 🤣

I think just about everyone here would agree with you....those Ping putters I kept will make fun gifts eventually and the 13 - hopefully when I put more publically, they will find good home.
I still play my 65+ year old putter, I've a few others that are fun to practice with.

I have an old Cushin (or Kushin, I forget the spelling on this one.)  Anyway, I filled in the slot with epoxy, my theory being that would make the distance more consistent on slight mis-hits.   Anyway, I think it worked and I love that little guy now.

Karsten made both the cushin and kushin.     The slot is karstens patented floating face design, often misquoted as a sound slot.   Never seen anyone fill it in!

I just kept pushing the epoxy in there till it came out the other side and cleaned up the excess.   Clearly an act of desperation.

Another old PING putter wandered in to my possession. Unsure if it’s truly old. While PING definitely made some un attractive clubs I’ve yet to try one that played horrible. Can’t wait to give this one a shot. Feels light even for an old Ping but does have an oversized Wynn grip that of course is deteriorating. Don’t know anything about it. Unfortunately I scrubbed off some patina to be able to read it. May have to store in the garage so tarnish can re start.

Thanks that’s pretty cool. Never seen an A-blade before. I like the look of it. Add to my want list. BeCu PAL and RIGHT IN and of course a BeNi Anser 4 has been on the list for awhile.

That's a newer band on the shaft, trademark stamp means post 1970. Perhaps reshafted by Ping. Somebody probably really loved it.

I think bringing my Pal was almost counter productive to glow mini / halloween golf.  I might get over it makes a Nitro feel good / is hard as a rock, I can't line them up! The lighting just messes with my head! Could be the scary stuff also lol

Is there a difference between the Ping Anser 2 and Ping Anser 3 besides the material used (stainless steel and magnesium bronze)?  Thanks.

Any Ping made over the decades of classic Ping is still 100% usable today. I love them, especially on greens slower than a pool table.

Putters made of German stainless steel forged by the hand of God on Mount Fuji while the blacksmith fires are stoked with the breath of 50 virgins are a nice marketing gimmick, but don’t make any more pressure four-footers. 🙂

I love the MyDay and Zing shapes.  The B60 style is also one that just seems to work for me.

BeCu always turns heads but when it comes to feel, I'll take BeNi, Stainless, and MgBr over BeCu.  I have a bunch of BeCu putters but only one feels/sounds good with a deep thud sound upon impact.  The rest are quite tingy (which I personally do not prefer) and I have no clue what makes the good one an anomaly.

ohh, how bout the ball follows the path you sighted & goes into the hole?

While I can start it on line just the same, I just cannot judge pace appropriately unless it has a sound I'm accustomed to.  Pace dictates line, and is crucial to lag putting.

Anyway, that comment was in regards to the construction or materials that resulted in it having the deeper sound I needed.
