He's not fit to lick Tiger's bootlace (as a golfer, not as a human).

 

Great swing, fun to watch but hasn't won majors for 10 years, and his prime years at that.

When I say golfer I don’t mean the ability to make scores, I mean a person that have an aura of love for the game and behaves and plays like one who does. Too many of the top golfers just gives the impression of being like top athletes in their behavior. Rory and Tiger seem to live their game, plays the game, talks about the game as someone who loves it. I remember Tiger, when in the ”close” period in the Vijay years describing a crispy little iron nine that got things together, And Rory says things like  ”some days you feel that you feel like how can I ever hit it and other days how can I ever miss”. Stuff like that is relatable. They’re not like we in the team have decided to stay patient and be in the moment. They seem to have golfers souls.

Yeah, a ho-hum PGA Tour event as well. Unfortunately Fed-Ex Cup points are pretty important for ranking and getting into designated events now, so if you are on the borderline for status, it makes sense to try to get good points on the board early in the season.

But he's won 21 PGA Tour and DP World Tour events, including the Players Championship, Tour Championship multiple times, WGCs, FedEx Cup events... how can you be a flat track bully if you're beating the best players in the world regularly over a long time? Flat track bully would be if he stayed 100% on the European Tour and won the Indian Open, Dutch Open, Scandinavian Masters etc and only played against the rest in majors. That moniker doesn't work when you're beating the best players in the world.

I'm minded of Seve's line 'If everyone in the world was playing their best, Sandy would win and I would come second.'

 

McIlroy's like that. If he played the way he can, everyone else is vying for the runner up spot. He doesn't though. He short-sides himself with 9-irons, makes perplexing double bogeys out of nowhere, three-putts from a yard and shoots inexplicable 73s on Fridays, before doing a Greg Norman and snatching a top five with a 64 from nowhere on Sunday when the pressure's off.
