Yeah, I agree, in the past it used to always be things like Bell's Scottish Open etc. but nowadays it seems to be a thing where the country is dropped and it's only the sponsor in the tournament name. I would have thought it serves the tournament and sponsor well to have both in the title from an identity/recognition point of view. I'm sure some marketing genius has insisted its better for the sponsor name to be on its own and they are putting up the money so that happens.

Soudal Belgian Open sounds better to me and it has more identity.

He's in the field for the KLM Open starting on the 5th June. I expect he will be playing most of the European Swing on the DPWT.

I have to gripe.  Keeping in mind that the ET coverage will always be better than the US coverage so long as they never show guys in a studio talking about something, there has been some concerning trends.  The first is the way they can't seem to help but mention every time Luke Donald is anywhere near anything, that he is the Ryder Cup captain.  It's becoming almost as bad of a drinking game as when announcers mention Brooke Henderson's sister is her caddie.  And exactly what is it they are accomplishing by doing a vignette seemingly every hour about the Ryder Cup and the current standings?  Back off.

 

Hopefully the new leadership brings some of that down.  Never understood why they felt bringing a guy who wrecked a network in Canada to be in charge was the way to go.  I guess blue glasses are hypnotic.

 

I've come around somewhat on the on course interviews.  A)it needs to be the right player.  Ewen Ferguson, since I'm a fan of his.  Tyrrell Hatton is actually wildly funny.  B)It needs to be Tim Barter doing them.  Or Iona Stephen.  Inci Mehmet seems like she is paid by the word, and the others are too boilerplate.

 

To give an example:  Tim Barter interviewed Hatton early in 2024, and the subject came up about Christmas gifts or some such, and Hatton had forgotten, or forgotten what he had received.  Made for a good laugh.  Fast forward a year, Barter brings it up again to see if he repeated his folly.  That's the kind of stuff that makes those worthwhile.  Or the time Hatton hit a ball to the right of a pin that was tight to water on the right, but left himself a 3 foot birdie putt, and he referred to his white pants as the wrong colored trousers to be wearing when you hit a shot like that.  A player talking about the wind being up, or the rough is thick....  there is no point to that.  But stuff like above, that is the gold.  

 

As I said, still a better viewing experience than US networks, but hopefully they don't think the US models are the method to follow.
