Might only be a minor invitational, but all this scar tissue adds up.

I fear his major winning days are over.

“I tried to hit a tee shot on the last; I probably wanted to hit a different shot because that was what was most comfortable, but I tried to go with the shot that I feel like I should hit, and then I wanted to try to turn one over because it was the only way that I was going to be able to carry the bunker on the right, too,” McIlroy explained

This kind of worries me a little. With all his experience he doesn't just hit a fairway finder but goes for the purists "correct" shot. Seems like muddled thinking and even the explanation is little confusing.

I'm a fan of both Rory and Tommy but I'm doubtful Tommy makes birdie if Rory doesn't hit in the water.

Yeah that is a concern, Rory is usually a great driver of the ball but that day he missed several fairways and was liable to do so under pressure. He had a 1-stroke lead and Lawrence was finished. A par guarantees a playoff. 5 wood, 7 iron, middle of the green, two putts. Worst he gets is playoff, best case he wins.

I’m always astounded when I think Rory hasn’t won a major in almost 10 years but then he reminds me why.

It's a little sad honestly. I mean sure he has enough money to dry his tears with $100 bills every single day for the rest of his life without even changing his net worth, but in 2024 to still be completely missing the hole from both sides within 3ft in the final group on Sunday is just a continuation of the very specific trend written about last year; Rory is two strokes worse on Sunday when in contention and he averages about two more putts per round. He just happened show us where those two extra putts comes from in very explicit fashion. 😅

He's trying to boost his OWGR to play in the Masters. His win in OZ moved him up to 70 and he's now exempt to play in all DP events if he chooses.

Thanks. I was under the impression all those guys were banned. Fair play to Niemann for making the effort.

The shots he hit in the playoff in Oz were some of the best I saw in 2023, given the circumstances. Should be a factor again this week.

New rule, if your top 50 in the world you have to play woods pre 1990 on the DP World Tour. I just got hired as the new commissioner, my idea.

I thought so too, perhaps he was never a DP Tour member to begin with, also the event was co-sanctioned with the OZ tour so they just want the big names there regardless of affiliation, which is why Cam played too. Congrats to him for circumnavigating the rules (?)

From my understanding the DP World Tour never 'banned' the LIV guys, there were just fines they had to pay. I think Niemann was aware of this and has obviously just paid his fine and gone back to playing a few European Tour tourneys.

The PGA Tour however, completely banned the LIV guys from coming back or playing any of there tournaments.

Makes sense. Thanks.  I know Wiesberger had to pay about $1 million to get back on the DP Tour, and his status was nerfed down to the career winnings exemption. the SA guys played in the events earlier this year (and won) but they were co sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour, I don't know what there status would be nor if they would be eligible for this event.

I wonder why others haven't just paid the fine then?

Take Rahm, for example, he could pay with a fraction of his sign on free and still be a member of the DP World. Since his tour doesn't start until February, he could tune his game up in Dubai.

He he didn't have to pay anything. His fines ($1.9 million US) to the DP Tour were paid by the exhibition circuit and not out of his own pocket. He is in the field in Dubai this week.

According to a Telegraph report, those fines added up to approximately £1.5 million throughout the 22 LIV events he participated in. LIV reportedly paid the sum on Wiesberger’s behalf when he requested to rejoin his home tour.

The DP World Tour released a statement on Thursday explaining that Wiesberger simply had to pay his fines and serve his suspension to be reinstated—both of which he has now done, with LIV’s assistance.

  • Thanks 2

Remember talking point 2a of joining LIV "to spend more time with the family" he will use the liv tour to fine tune his game for the Masters

I suppose Rahm would be like retiring on a bumper pension then going back to work the next week. The deal would have taken away the motivation.

IIRC Sergio was the only one who didn't pay.

So, if everyone bar Sergio paid, and is therefore eligible to play, why is no-one else playing this week (or any other week for that matter)?

Doesn't add up to me. Niemann is the only one who appears to have membership of the DP World Tour.

Not true, been discussed 200 times.

Another example of why we had it pretty good when @MattyO1984 was kind enough to provide a weekly thread on the DP Tour so the events could get the attention they deserve  every week and not having tournament discussions go sideways like this mess does with regularity.

Doing the DP Tour a disservice.
