I like Tyrrell Hatton to win this week.

Rory is paired with Morenk and Horschel, interesting.

Yes, a bit akward for Rory to play with Meronk, I think. One could assume Rory had given his input about the captains picks? Rory gave high praise to Ludwig Aberg in his press conference today.

Meronk's beef is with the qualification formula. While he was competing at The Genesis, Honda Classic, API, and Dell Match play, Robert MacIntyre was racking up DPWT points. I don't think its unreasonable to assume that had Meronk spent those 4 weeks playing DPWT events, he would have easily racked up the 183 pts needed to pass MacIntyre on the Euro pts list.

This is what screwed Meronk...

From the European Ryder Cup Qualification criteria...

“As far as the European Points List is concerned, modifying the points allocation will give an improved chance for DP World Tour members playing predominantly on the DP World Tour to make the Ryder Cup team through one of the now three spots available from that list."

https://www.rydercup.com/news-media/qualification-process-confirmed-for-the-2023-european-ryder-cup-team

Meronk screwed himself by playing in America and Luke chose to go with talent and upside in Hojgaard and Aberg. Not an unreasonable choice.

Meronk will certainly try to make a statement this week...

This week, on K Club. Not one of the Iconic Links but a course with a finish at least I like. Rorys approach on 18 when he won is one of the shots one remember from the 10´s.  And the reaction from his fellow countrymen. Rory, and the other great Irish Open storymaker, Lowry in the field.

At the bottom of the leaderboard Andy Sullivan... Just a few years ago his approaches were razor sharp, he had wonderful iron play. Looking at the graphics for each hole it seems like just the Iron play is what has caused the bogeys. And he´s a surprisingly long way down on the DP money list.  Anyone knows his story, Injuries, swing changes...?

If you were Adrian Meronk this week, would you feel unmotivated or would you go out with fire in your belly and try win this tournament by 5?

No, I’d be annoyed with myself that I had not qualified by right as the picks are dependent upon more factors than one guys play - eg team-balance.

He's not the only one with an axe to grind. Shane Lowry has been publicly humiliated in this media frenzy. I reckon he'll be firing with all guns blazing to prove he is the real deal and not a busted flush like he's been made out to be.

Unseasonably hot weather this week in Ireland, 28 degrees, high humidity and blazing sun. A delayed summer after the wettest July on record. Went to it yesterday and was sweating buckets!

The K Club is easy to get to from various parts of Ireland, especially Dublin where most of the population live and has readymade facilities. Some of the best links courses have no infrastructure whatsoever for hosting a tournament. Bad roads, no public transport, limited accommodation. The best of both worlds would be Portmarnock, but it was blacklisted for years for its refusal to admit women members. Now that they've changed that, they could be back in contention.

Also next year is Royal County Down, so that should make up for it. I've no issue with the Irish Open being on a parkland golf course though, Ireland is proud of its parkland courses too.

Yep, the infrastructure and proximity to population centers issues are in the mind, here's Rory talking about these subjects in respect to holding The (British) Open in (Republic of) Ireland (not Northern Ireland = UK) in the near future:

A name on point for golf, in a German way.

That sequence shows up what Rory's problem seems to be so often these days. Total lapses that others just aren't making when they are playing well. It's cost him so many tournaments. I mean following an Eagle with missing a 1 foot putt! Then the usual bounce back birdie on 18. But you just can't miss a one foot putt - unless you have the yipps of course and I don't think Rory does. But he misses so many under 3 foot.

Really enjoyed Portmarnock, great course, beautiful too.  I wonder if that spit of land can handle the infrastructure.  The course should be fine, especially after the small rollback.  Rory is right about the airport.  Planes flew nonstop loudly over the course all round!
