Shaft question..

Just curious if iron shafts gradually get weaker over time?

 

I've been playing KBS $-Taper 120's in my current iron set for 4 years now.  I play a lot of golf - like 50+ rounds a year.  I've got a new set of irons with the same shaft and noticed that I struggle to hit these new irons.  I'm in the process of checking lie angles, but wanted to see if the 4 year old shafts might be somewhat weaker than the new ones and if that could be causing some of the strike inconsistencies.

 

Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't think 4 years would have any effect on the shafts. I would check swingweights first.

Maybe the shaft and head combo doesn't work for you?

I'm slowly getting to that conclusion.. lol  

 

swing weight is the same, grips and shaft are the same and we all know its never the person, always the equipment... haha..

Some people can plug and play the same shaft into any head and be just fine where others may need to explore the line they're in or it's completely different shaft.

I’d stick one of the old shafts in one of the new heads and see if that eliminates the issue.

Shafts don't weaken with age. 

 

You can not expect the clubs to perform the same.  There is almost no chance that the heads weigh the same or have the same CG point in the heads.  Those two factors alone will completely change the dynamics on how the shaft feels to you.  A number of years ago I built a set of irons.  Went from X-22's to i20's FWIW.  Same shafts, same grips, same lengths, same swing weight, same lie angles and yet they played completely different.  The head wasn't too much different, but different enough.  To get them to feel and play anywhere close to what I had in the other set, I had to increase the SW by a couple of points and made the lie angles more upright because the sole was longer and less radius.  Even then they they felt odd.  I ended up getting rid of them.  I bought what I have now and went with a completely different shaft from what I had used previously.   Less boardy and a little softer.
