MMT 120 vs Project X LZ 5.5

Just a quick question. Like many others thinking about going to graphite. Currently play JPX 900 Forgeded with the LZ 5.5, they work very well. But I’m starting to feel that elbow a little bit and thought I’d try to stay ahead of it.

I really don’t have a way to demo most of the options, so it’s mostly reading up on them. Came across a set with MMT 120 S and just wondering if, on paper, they might be a good replacement.

Do you mean MMT 125? Not sure they make a 120.

I play the MMT 125 in stiff and they are perfect for my moderate swing speed. I've only tried PX LZ in 6.0 and those were a little too stout for me.

Yes , 125 Sorry about that.

And thanks, that helps. It sounds like we’re maybe similar is SS.

NO MMT 120 shafts.  MMT 125 (S & TX), next inline is MMT 105, MMT 95, 85, 75, etc.

LZ 5.5 is stiff and 115g, I happen to have both.  LZ 6.0 came stock in my 620 CBs, while PX 6.0 came stock in 620 MBs.  And I play MMT 85 & 95 in my new T100.  Also have MMT 125S & TX, which are my favorite shafts, only they are too much for me these days.

IMO = MMT 105-stiff, and 95 stiff compare to LZ 5.5

Yeah, sorry about that, they are 125’s.

So you feel the 125’s will be stouter( stiffer) than the LZ 5.5’s?

Depends on mechanics, and you, but IMO, yes.  Not only grams heavier, but coming from unique LZ loading zone, MMT mid-high bend, and smooth nature may necessitate the user feel more power is needed for comparable distance.  They worked well for me hitting the ball as opposed to most people swing the club and ball gets in the way.  As I said, PX LZ 6.0 came stock in the 620 CBs.  Played them for a month before pulling them; too many clunkers due to the loading zone.

If you're comfortable with LZ loading zone, you might rethink switching.

I played MMT 125S 3-PW in 620 MB's, and MMT 125TX 8 iron shafts in wedges for a few years.  Had 105S in set of 620 CB's.  Aging was why I switch recently to 85S & 95S in T100 3i-9i.

Mark my words, they are fine shafts.  They are stronger than steel, yet tip design features purposely allow the club head to talk to the user's hands.  No matter how hard I swing, they go straight for me.

I had Project X LZ 5.5 on my irons and went To Mitsubishi MMT 105 Stiff.  I will tell you that MMT 105 is closer in terms of weights with LZ 5.5 than MMT 125

Here is what I wrote about MMT 105 Stiff on another tread recently

As for the feel, performance, distance of MMT 105 Stiff?

(yes, I know some of these are very subjective)

Feel of the shaft:  Not sure its because I was coming from Modus 120 (very smooth steel shaft to PX LZ 5.5 (smooth shaft) but, MMT did not feel as smooth as I imagined.  Doesn't mean it's very stiff or very stout but I can say that MMT DOES play true to flex. I can sense that on a miss hits, it's less harsh on my arms/elbow and ball still flies good distance. I wouldn't call this a smooth shaft but I can say it's firm and soft.  TBH, it's actually feels like steel shaft except with tad softness.

Club feel at ball impacted: This is the area where I think this shaft lacks.  Due to being graphite or its materials, on a good ball impact, I don't get that nice soft clean crisp feel.  I get more of soft mushy/thud feel.  It still a good feeling but nothing as great as steel shafts.  I guess you can't have it both ways.  If shaft is dulling with miss hits, it will also be dull with clean hits.

Distance:  I can't tell but distance seems to be about same.  Based on visual, maybe I gained about 1 to 3 yards if that? I really don't know.  Definitely didn't loose distance for sure.

One thing I can tell you is that ball goes STRAIGHT 😂. I MEAN STRAIGHT!!! with less draw or fade.

Flight: my ball flight seems to be bit higher than LX 5.5 ( in general, I do have high ball flights in all my clubs including drivers.  Especially at the range)

Am I happy with this change? Yes I am Happy with change and no regrets so far.   If I was forced to go back Modus 120 or PX LZ 5.5, will I  throw a fit and cry? Probably NOT although I would prefer Modus 120 than PX LZ 5.5 😅

I guess real test will be tomorrow when I go out to play 18 holes with it.

For people that are getting older and want less strain on their body, I can sense it will help in long run.

Wish: I think it would be awesome if there was a graphite iron shaft with similar profile as Modus 120.  I just love Modus 120.  Such a great and smooth shaft.

Just as an FYI, the iron heads I am using is Muira CB-302.

I think I have to find a way to try some before I jump in and buy.

I really appreciate all the thoughts, but it just proves it’s so different for everybody.

One more very important factor.  When you change your shaft from PX LZ 5.5 to MMT 105, you swing weight will increase for sure.  I am not 100% sure why but I think it may have to do with MMT having mesh steel at tip of the shaft which probably is increasing weight at tip section.  My estimation is that it will increase the swing weight by 2 levels.

Similar thing happened when I changed Modus 120 to LZ 5.5.  My swing weight decreased going from Modus 120 to LZ 5.5.  As we all know that Modus 120 soft but and very stiff tip section so most likely butt haft section of the shaft lighter than tip section of the shaft.

If you want similar overall similar weight of the clubs with LZ 5.5, you might want to consider MMT 95

So after playing a round with my new irons set with MMT 105 shaft last week which I did not have good game (excuses 😂: 1. new course never played before 2. narrow fairways 3. Green was really really fast 4. Rough area was rough with tall grasses OR it could just be I am not use to the new iron set with MMT 😅) I been sick all week so I have not been able to go to the range.

Today I felt better so went to the range and hit some balls with MMT 105 along with another iron set which I have LZ 5.5.

I have to say again, MMT 105 is very firm and heavy shaft compared to my LZ 5.5.  Also I am not sure if it's the shaft, weight or the iron heads itself but I wasn't getting a good contact my irons with MMT.  Yet with my LZ 5.5, I was getting a great contact.

My MMT 105 has Muira CB-302 which is SUPPOSED to be very forgiving irons (reason why I got them recently). And my LZ 5.5 has Vega VC-01 which has thinner sole and smaller head than CB-302 so theoretically CB-302 should be easier get a good contact.  That wasn't the case at all.

With MMT, if I slow down my tempo, I got somewhat of good contact but if I went fast tempo, I was topping the ball. With LZ 5.5, fast tempo or slow tempo, I was getting a good contract most of the time.

So with all that being said, if I had to do it over again, I would probably go with MMT 95 instead of 105.

If you like the weight of LZ 5.5 and want to stay closer to same weight, I would definitely consider MMT 95 vs MMT 105.
