iron face wear.. should i be concerned

My 785's are beginning to show some signs of aging. I know they have plenty of life left but curious if they are affecting my spin or distance in any way. The grooves are def still all there, but the wear around it looks a bit "hmmmm...". I KNOW they will play just fine cause i played today and nothing peculiar happened. I just got done scrubbing them and i took a closer look and cant help but wonder if the wear could effect my spin/distance ?? what if the spin has been reduced by 500rpm but i just wouldnt notice it on the course lol ?

 

Here are some pics of my 7,8,9 for reference...i can feel sharp edges when i run my fingers through them.

Yes ive seen worse too. Im not asking if anybody's seen worse. Im asking if spin/launch/distance are effected due to face wear..

I have used wire toothbrush with cleaner to derust the Spot so wear mark is less apparent.

My Z785's looked just like those before I got ZX7's.  I started to perceive changes in spin with my pw which was the worst one and thought it was time to change to sharper grooves.  I realize this is not tested and all anecdotal, but I felt like I was losing a little control.

 

I did love those irons tho!  Had them for three years.

In normal dry conditions you probably notice nothing.  Where it can start to be a small detractor is in wet conditions.  If you don't notice much performance distance in wet vs. dry I would not worry and be proud to display those wear spots like a badge of honor!

I've seen folks use wadded up aluminum foil to do the same thing.

Tom Kite once played the same iron set on Tour for 15 years. That's thousands of range sessions and rounds of golf. Irons and wedges do not "wear out".

11 yrs on WRX. this is quite possibly the first time i offended someone. I don't even know how to go about this lol. But here goes..

 

the face wear you are seeing is no indication of my skill level nor am i trying to flex. I am genuinely curious/concerned if the damage can cause ball flight issues that are not noticeable on course. And the only way i can show you what im talking about is by showing you the extent of the wear via pictures. i mean... i dont know how to explain the level of wear on the face with just words 🤷‍♂️. Can you ?

 

Truth is i can most def hit the worst shots with the best of 'em and i do it ALLLLL the time. i don't find the middle of the face as often as the wear mark would suggest. And if my putter could show face wear it would span across the half the f'kin face. i kid you not. 

 

But ill edit the pictures.

i dont believe that for a second. Wedges def wear out. I'd post pictures of mine, but its flexing. so i cant.

Wear marks are different from worn out. Kite took pride in playing the same set of wedges for more than 10 years.

My own observation is that a brand-new wedge includes sharp edges to the grooves which may impart extraordinary spin to a shot. But after about a dozen shots the edge is dulled and from that point on the performance of the grooves is the essentially the same for the following year (s).

Well, what could wear out on the iron face?  Probably the most significant factors would be: groove edges become rounded, and groove depth becomes less deep.

 

I don't think loss of chrome plating would make any difference but the round edges and shallow grooves may indeed make a difference.  Can you really measure the edges and groove depth?  Possible surely, with the correct equipment, like a high powered magnifying lens and super sensitive micrometer.  You must also know the factory specs to compare.

 

You also could bring your wedge to a shop and have them cut the face in half with a saw and then you could more easily see what is going on.  I would do nothing but clean the dirt from the grooves and carry on.

Is that what the purpose was??? Was someone thinking the tech of a basic one piece forged iron head had changed much since 2013? And how do we know iron tech hasn’t changed unless we see his numbers with a modern 7i??? I’m confused

Why does it bother you he hits it 200 with a 7 iron? I can also do that.
