The 80/20 is the regular pure roll insert. there’s nothing different it’s just additional naming that’s been around for it. It’s not a new type. If you want a firmer feel you get the aluminum insert on the myspider configuration page.

I just called TM and the rep said the model SS used has a different insert than the retail 80/20 insert🤷

I just asked TM and they said the My Spider surlyn is the 80/20 insert which is different than the retail one 🙂 🤔

Here’s a golfwrx article from 2013 touting TaylorMade’s “new 80/20” Pure Roll insert and it says it is 80 percent surlyn and 20 percent aluminum. Is there a new 80/20 or is it the same thing they’ve offered in retail putters for 10 years?

FWIW, TM made sure to put out a social media post today about 'building SS's putter'.  Gotta jump on that so don't blame them.

 

My understanding was that the surlyn pad and the aluminum made up the 80/20 current insert for some time now...at least that's what TM has advertised it to be.

I like plumbers neck mallets so this intrigues me. Last spider I used was a spider mini years ago. Had one of my better putting rounds with it but of course, switched out.

 

Apparently taylormade calls the plumbers neck an 'L neck'.

 

Found an insane deal on last year's Spider EX with an L neck (either tour issue or MySpider program?) and KBS GPS shaft so going to try that out this weekend.

COG further away from shaft axis front to back can cause many mallets to flop open, the Proto with the COG further forward most likely eliminates that.

Really strange hill to die on, but you do you. Significant difference in feel between the surlyn insert and milled face (I've owned/own both). Not to mention the difference in CG.

You can pretend all you want. Shape, neck, balance, weight. The big stuff. A difference in face material ain’t what bailed Scotty Scheffler out last week. There’s a TON of nuances and personal preferences with putters. None of which matter if the basics aren’t right.

Milled faces are ALWAYS better than inserts. How can you say such things?? You're on WRX!!  Inserts suck, ESPECIALLY Taylormade inserts... 😆

 

(PS: Thank you for spouting reality @BHI 99, although I believe 'feel' is an subjective, almost indescribable thing, you really hit the nail on the head. I also believe the technology advantages of modern inserts afford much more flexibility in impacting the roll of a ball, vs. milling, but that's just my opinion, the Pure Roll insert does just that, the black line on my ball seemingly always rolls end of over end as 'pure' as can be)
