How does the milled version of the Proto compare to other milled putters out there? I know it'll feel firmer than the surlyn insert but I want an idea of how it feels.

I can tell you the milled version feels significantly firmer than the insert version. Just rolled both. I prefer everything about the milled version, but I was a little surprised by how much firmer it felt compared to the insert. I feel like **maybe** it’s a little firmer than the Logan Olson blade I had, but I sold it, so can’t directly compare. The milling on the proto is definitely shallow. Feels solid. Just pretty firm, IMO.

Thanks for the insight! I'll be going with the insert. I'm a sucker for the Tour X head shape, but I need the toe hang of the L neck. When I had the Spider GT Max, I performed best with the weights in the middle and forward to allow it to release. Having the topline alignment aid helps as well. I need something to meet the ball at address to hit my line accurately. The toe hang of my 7 T CH is 22° and the L neck Tour X matches up near perfect at 21°.

Update — I spent about an hour rolling the putter indoors today. I have to admit, the difference in feel between the milled face and insert was quite different, and it took me by surprise a bit. But I got used to the firmer feel after a handful of putts, and I do like it. The feel is very solid. I’d say it’s similar to the Scotty phantom mallet I used to own, but I’m curious for others to chime in. I’m going to keep the milled version and sell my insert version. Planning to keep this one in the bag for a good while.

Have fun! Report back if you have the time!

I played in league tonight with it.  I had 9 putts through 8 holes ( 4 putted last hole because of the amount of slope... LOL).  LOL!!  awesome putter... feel is great (i'm coming from a blade putter) and the site line is excellent.  Great first round.

So after rolling my Proto X slant neck for a few days indoors, I've decided to return it.  I did not take off the wrapping because I knew I might want to send it back, so take any of my comments on feel with a grain of salt - leaving plastic on the face definitely adds a little bit of click to impact.

Pros:

* Love the look of the milling, it reminds me of the lighter Scotty Special Select milling, which I think is high praise.  I also like the look of how it's attached to the body with the black torx screws - industrial and cool in my opinion.  Headcover is very premium with a magnet closure.

* Feel is good but not excellent.  Definitely improved over the retail surlyn insert in my opinion, and it reminds me of one of the harder Scotty mallets in the Phantom lineup.  I wouldn't describe it as amazing, but it is definitely much better than before.

* Retains the fantastic Spider X alignment and stability.  I was worried it would be too much toe hang for me at 46*, but with the forward CG it still feels stable and like it squares itself to my arc when I swing it.  I think for most if they like previous Spider X SN's, they will like this.  The stability is very similar.

Cons:

* I think the cost is high for the improvements over the retail SN.  This is ultimately why I'm returning mine.  I cannot justify spending $500 for this when I already have the flow neck hydro X.

* Lack of length options.  I need a 35", possibly a 35.5" putter.  I didn't want to deal with extending the putter and changing the swing weight for a putter I just shelled out $500 on.

So, those are my thoughts.  A fine putter, but I will be sticking with my rotation of Spider X Flow Neck and Scotty Fastback 1.5.  If you like the Spider X SN, but want slightly better feel and don't mind paying for it, I think people will be very happy with it.

So, I experimented with a counterbalanced build last year with an Odyssey 5k putter.  I didn't like the insert or look of the putter, but the counterbalance did seem to force a really good stroke.  I ended up moving on from it to go with the Spider X Proto.

I was messing around yesterday in the shop with some of the counterbalanced Odyssey mallets (still hate the insert).  But again, I noticed how smooth my stroke was with them.  I figured, pulling the stock shaft and rebuilding it at 38" and a SuperStroke CB grip would be easy and cheap enough.  If it doesn't work, I can always just reglue the stock shaft back in.

I am curious though.  I can't find the head weight.  And, I honestly don't know what the target weight should be with a counterbalanced build.  Anyone here build theirs out like that?  If so, would you be willing to share how much weight you had to add to the head?

Still loving mine. Installed a LA shaft and got some heavier weights to bring the headweight up to 366 grams. I have Scotty’s, a custom Mackmade, and a few other really nice putters but I’ve been rolling the spider proto. I’ve always loved the spider shape but hated inserts.

What is tip size for shaft needed to fit the proto?

Hello you guys kinda bitting my nails and not shure if i want to bite the bullet

wondering if any "spider tour" users can give some feedback on the proto.  I have the spider tour black head with a kbs c taper putter shaft and two eight gram weights no sight lines, just wanted an upgrade been hitting it since 16" in great condition just want to upgrade the tech ie. sightlines weighting etc plan on purchasing slant neck if i do get one as the spider is slant and i am comfortable with it

i want to eliminate 3 putts, main ones are those pesky 4-5 footers you left short but on-line.  i feel with the sightlines on x it should be easier to line up those short distance putts

what are the weights if anyone knows in the head of the proto?

Thanks

How did the putter feel change and did it throw the balance and swing weight off a lot , I’m debating putting this shaft in my proto as well cheer !
