Hackmotion core vs pro

dodgyman

Recommended Posts

Just picked up a HackMotion core given all the promotions they are running.

It already seems like a great investment and I am incorporating it well in the other areas I’m working on.

I can’t tell what benefits I would really get from pro vs core, and I’m wondering if anyone has feedback given the big price difference. I know what data is missing but I can’t tell how valuable it is.

I work with a a coach already and am looking to incorporate this into my practice to make sure I don’t regress on fundamentals as we make changes, and I do have access to track man data at those times.

Does anyone have experiences or examples of the kinds of things I might be missing?

I have had the Pro for about 3 months now, it's been really great for learning what's actually happening vs what I'm feeling. I went with the Pro because I tend to want the best of what's available, but for 3.3 times the cost, I don't know that I can say it's "worth it", though I don't have any regrets.

I used the putting mode a couple times, not sure how much value there is. I found that I have very little wrist motion in my putting stroke, and also found that it struggles to pick up my putting stroke, at least on putts that I make on my Perfect Practice mat.

I do use the "Full Data" mode every time I use it- something that you have to have the Pro to get. I specifically wanted to measure rotation, but unfortunately I still have a hard time applying that data to my swing, so I can't say that it's been worthwhile, at least thus far. I can see ulnar/radial deviation being important if you can figure out how to use the data, but I haven't yet.Tempo is huge for me though, I do like that!

Pro does have the comparison graph to tour pro data, which is neat, and I can see using that in the future to make some deeper analysis. Trail wrist mode is a pro-only feature, and I can see the potential for that as well.

In conclusion- I use it almost every time I practice. But I primarily use it to measure lead wrist at address/top of backswing/impact and use it to measure tempo. You get wrist angles for less than 1/3 of what I paid, so unless there is a feature you feel is missing, you are almost definitely getting the best value to be had. Feature comparison can be found here: https://hackmotion.com/products/

If you have further questions about how any of the features you don't have and may be interested in, let me know, I'd be glad to explore them on mine for you.

This was great, exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for. As I mentioned, there's the feature list itself which is pretty easy to understand, but the value of that data vs the simple ulnar/radial that core provides is harder to figure out.

Rather than start a new thread, I figured I'd bump this to see if anyone has developed additional thoughts on the Core vs Pro versions in the interceding months.  Like Dodgyman was, I am now pondering the value of the additional data available the Pro version of software.

I have pro and I would say that it’s not worth the price difference. With that being said, if I were to make the purchase again, then I would still choose Pro. I just know me and I know that if I got the core my mind wouldn’t be able to rest thinking about all the metrics I don’t have access to. After practicing with it (~ 6 months now) I am glad I do have the pro version because my flex/extension and ulnar/radial are actually in really good ranges but my rotation is lacking from not full releasing the club and the rotation metric is the one I need to improve.

I don’t use it every time I practice. I will use it maybe once a month just to check in on progress. I also might use it if I am trying to implement a change that is a little more extreme just to make sure I’m not messing with the good things I have going on in my swing and this has saved me from going down a couple rabbit holes.

^ Thanks for sharing. You and I have a similar mindset when it comes to purchasing products that have different tiers of capability, but, in this case, I'm leaning towards the Core tier just because it's such a large step up in pricing.

Im pretty sure if you go Core, then you can still upgrade to Pro if you decide to go that route and I don’t think it would cost you any more than buying Pro from the start. I would double check me on that because I’m just going off memory from when I was weighing the decision.

I have the Core. I think there's a good chance it gives me what I need out of the device and app. I don't have much time in with it yet, but I suspect that its usefulness may be limited now that it has confirmed to me what I need to be working on. I'll either start using it regularly or sell it. The jury is still out.

It's frustrating that so many of the YouTube videos promoting this device focus on Pro features without explaining that those features come at 3x the cost of the Core model. Most will either show the ulnar/radial measurements or show using the device on the trail hand, neither of which are supported in the Core package.

I'm willing to spend $250 on a device because that wouldn't buy me much on the lesson tee. At the $900 price point I'm much more likely to do a lesson package.

Thought I would bump this up and say that this has been my exact experience so far. I have only had it for a week or so but basically have one thing now that I want to work on. Was it worth $295 to get the new version? Sure. Its pretty well built, it works well, the app works good, its very easy to get up and running. The core drills are good but it seems like theres a very limitied amount of "stuff" that comes in the base model.

Definitely not something I'm going to use 3-4x a week when I'm hitting balls though, way too much information. I will figure out one thing to work on and then grind away on that.

So is it something I'll keep around - also not sure. I am pretty sure they have a return policy of some kind so I may keep trying it out for the next couple weeks and see how I feel about hanging onto it.

Definitely share your frustration with the upcharging though, and its now *$1,000* for the pro model - and I am pretty sure the hardware is the same you just get more "unlocked" for that price.  But for $1,000 I would just buy a 4 pack of lessons from my coach since I only see her once a year as it is. At that pricepoint it seems like its more for instructors than the average tinkerer.

One problem I have with the pro comparisons is that it’s absolute comparison not relative, unlike the practice. so when you are doing guided practice it will account for how weak or strong your grip is , and say you are relatively too flexed or extended here.

however when you compare it to the pre recorded data, it’s just an absolute comparison to that person data, which isn’t very useful unless you start at the same point as them. So for me with a really strong grip, I’m always going to start with more lead wrist extension than their ideal release model.

kinda disappointed in the pro features tbh, and also find not a ton of value relative to the lower tiers. I also think it’s lame the only thing the guided practice considers is flexion/extension. If you’re measuring radial and ulnar deviation, couldn’t those also be issues people have and possible suggestions to work on/drill? Feels like they aren’t really maximizing the utility of their tool, given what it measures. I understand the rotation part is a little more difficult to separate out so not a huge deal there.

That's reasonable. OTOH the app is easily updatable and I seem to get push updates on it regularly. I assume Hackmotion is building out more content, but I only have the basic version so it's just an assumption.

I owned the basic version, and I was able to swing in the ideal range (Type A pattern) with lead wrist, but I upgraded because I need to work on my trail wrist.  Rather than upgrade I just purchased a new one and kept the old one (trade-in saves less than $50).  That will allow you to wear on both wrists. I release the extension in my trail wrist too early.  At impact, I'm in flexion with both wrists which I'm hoping to fix (standard grip, but I tend to forward shaft lean too much at address).  I am super disappointed with the lack of trail wrist data and features.  They don't even release trail wrist data for all 3 swing patterns.  There are also 0 drills for trail wrist.  You also can't use the audio/vibrate feedback for ulnar/radial and ext/flex at the same time for a position (setup/top/impact).  I also wish there was a way to better identify data at various positions in between top/impact similar to the rotation data.  Anyway, seems like a lot of easy upgrades they left off for some reason.

That's highly unlikely unless:

  1. you calibrated poorly (flexion of one wrist tends to be extension of the other) or
  2. You look like one of the guys below

The trail wrist isn't super important, because…

IMO the Core is quite limited. You can’t do a lot of the things promoted by reviewers such as using the device on the trail hand.

You’re basically paying for the hardware and getting a taste of what it can do. Unless you’re willing to pay up for more features you’ll run out of ways to use it pretty quickly.
