Fujikura Axiom in wedges

Zeta

Recommended Posts

Bought new irons (T100) in September with Axioms (105 S) mostly because I have been struggling from golfers elbow for 2 seasons. I live in Finland so I didn't get a lot of play under my belt with the new irons, but it felt like the vibration dampening helped instantly. Also the switch from KBS Tour Stiffs was smooth and there was no transition period what so ever.  Strongly recommend for anyone whos struggling from joint pain. Our season is short and bad so it is extremely frustrating taking a weeks off because of pain - literally hand shaking when hitting balls.

Now when the temperature is below freezing over here, I'm trying to hit balls on Trackman 3 times a week, but I'm afraid to touch my wedges, because those have DG S200. I have read Howard Jones - The #8 iron spinner trick about wedges, but have you guys been implementing this on Fujikura Axioms? I sent email to Fujikura but the respond was a bit unclear, only stating that I should order short parallel shafts and tip those to wedge length.

If I want my wedges to progress nicely from my irons Axiom 105 S should I order Axiom 105 X Short Parallel shafts and tip those 50 - 0", 54 - 0,5" and 60 - 1" and butt cut to length? Or should I order 105 S tip 1,5" and butt cut everything to length? Or maybe something else?

I'd go this route, since the parallel tip of the axiom is only 2-1/2". If you trim them 1-1/2", there's not even enough left to go into the hosel.

I have been using Composite for five+ years now, but don't have those shafts.

Played MMT 125S for a few years before going to lighter weight shafts.  Anyway, have MMT 105S in 620 CBs, 3-PW, and have MMT 125TX 8i shafts in 52 & 58 wedges cut to length of PW.

If I recall, Axiom has short-mid-long iron sets of shafts, parallel.  IMO Pick "X" flex and the section that includes 8i.  Not sure about trimming.  Make sure to read the extensive post by Howard on 8i spinner subject.

I have Axiom in my irons, however I went a different route on my wedges. While the Axiom has been game changing for my irons, it would not be good for how I play my wedges. Axiom helped me increase spin, peak height, decent angle, and much tighter dispersion on my irons which is what I needed. However, I don’t ever swing my wedges full like my irons. I also prefer a lower more penetrating flight with wedges. Fujikura has a wedge specific MCI line, but also offer the Pro line. I prefer lighter weight shafts in my wedges as I find it helps me with touch shots and pitches. Of course feel is different for everyone but I find with heavier shafts around the greens and touch shots I tend to struggle controlling the speed and distance. I went with the Pro 95 (I play the 75 in axiom) and they have been perfect. If you want to go with Axiom, and want the “spinner” option, just order one flex firmer than you are playing in your irons in the short iron option, and install them untipped in your wedges then trim to playing length.

I made order for 3 short parallel X shafts. It will be a while until I get those + build. Kind of leaning towards Howards standard recommendation (green) for now. Will post results and the option I went for later for anyone thinking about the same stuff.

This information is from the Howard Jones - The #8 iron spinner trick about wedges page 10 or so.

THE FULL LIST FOR BETTER COMPARE OF OPTION
Sorted with strongest on top
image.png.3efc3ab83ce8d861860e026b87ef1dd8.png

COMPARED to shafts with full flex progression (Strait in), we get a boost to APEX with this numbers you see.

For each time we soft step and loose 5 CPM, APEX becomes 5 feets higher than a dedicated shaft for that head with "strait in" flex would have done.

image.png.34867c7296c422af63dc191297e649c7.png

The lowest 3, includes the OPTION to Tune them a little stronger, but APEX on our LOB who was 20 feets higher than a dedicated LOB wedge shaft would have sent it, has only dropped by 3 feets, equal to the 3/8" or 3 CPM stronger.

IF The Dynamic GOLD S300 player, now goes DG X100 #8 for wedge, and we include the Tiger stepping option, his APEX + vs "strait in", will look like this:

image.png.14f8bb2e02434fcfad61cb44dc456e6c.png

Compared to using S300 #9 iron shaft for LOB, who gave 20 feets plus on apex, we can cut that difference in 2, and get down to only 10 plus on APEX vs "strait in", and if we fine tune, we can take of another 3 feets on apex with 3/8" tip trim, who bring us down to 7 feet above "Strait in"

So I am thinking about the same thing.

I already have 105S Axioms in my irons. So If I was to do the same thing and if I am reading this right, for my GW (52 degree) and SW (56 degree) I would be getting the SP 105X shafts. I would not tip the GW and tip the SW 1/2 inch

How much would I be butt cutting these shafts ?

Cut to the same length as the iron shafts that came out of the wedges ?

I cant seem to figure out how much the butt cut should be

Most recommended solution is the green option on the table at Howards thread. You would order two SP 105 X shafts, put those untipped to your 52 and 56 and butt cut to wedge length. Which would lead to GW playing as real GW flex and SW soft stepped 1. If you are taking more full swings with SW than not then tip it 1/2". Cut to the same length as your current gamers if that suits you. Standard Vokey's would be 35,5" (52) and 35,25" (56).

I play the Axiom 105X in my irons.  I tried a couple of different things with an Axiom in my wedges and it just never clicked.

I ended up going Fujikura Pro 115 in my wedges, with their super long PTS you can trim as much as you want to get different feels out of it.

TBH, I rarely if ever swing full with a SW or LW, and the Pro 115 has been amazing.  This is a shaft to definitely take a look at.

That's the EXACT same thing That I did.

I had Hi Rev 115s (stock in Taylormade Hi-Toe) and went with the Pro 115s.  With the Hi-Revs and other steel shafts, I found myself "dumping" and fatting a lot of chips and pitches.  As soon as I put in the Pro 115s, that problem went away completely.  I'm also hitting it in the center of the face more frequently.

All MMT shafts are excellent.  I especially like the 105S.  Probably going to reinstall 105S in 3i & 4i.  Having said that, I've recently realized my fast tempo may have issues with the 2.8 torque, and "may" be the culprit for some of my mishits.  If true, I may be looking at Axiom because they have steel like torque values.  I know one thing, because of composite, won't be going back to steel.

Bringing this thread back up because it has good info for graphite users.

i currently game 110 Steelfiber Stiff - soft stepped. Technically since SF said to tip trim the 9 and PW the same (3.5”). My PW is not soft stepped.

I am wondering do I get the X shaft, tip trim it to 7 iron spec (2.5”) which would match being a flex stronger than my current 8 iron and just straight into my lob? Parallel tip is confusing me here.

thanks for the insights.

These are both essentially the 8i spinner, right ?

For the AXIOM, need to determine the tip profile possibility, whether or not you will affect the shaft taking 2.5" off the tip. I did it with TRAVIL, but not so agressively with AXIOM. I don't know how the outer wall looks beyond an inch.

You will need to sand down the tip in parallel, because it's probably too wide to fit the hosel at that length.

I play the heaviest and stiffest weight in the shaft already for the irons, so I simply replicated the same shaft in wedges and cut it down shorter. I tipped half an inch, sanded it to fit the hosel and it's working very well.
Otherwise, you can tip more agressively, but be careful or do so at your own risk with a single iron first.I do have a spare.....maybe I could find a way to experiment and make the shaft still useful for a putter. Need to know the tip to graphic distance to make sure how much it's already tipped.

Playing a shorter length should also help stiffen it up a bit by default.

I have Axiom 105s in my 5i-GW currently installed. debating 125x "8i spinner" options for the 54* and 58* but I admit I dont understand how much to tip trim these shafts. If I understand the "8i spinner" concept, I should get Axiom 125x SP shafts and then tip trim 1/2" for the 54* and tip trim 1" for the 58*.  then Butt trim each shaft to desired playing length.

is this correct?

anyone done this and results? would you do it again or something else?

Also now following this idea.  I have Axiom 125X in my iron shafts and have C-Taper 130X in my wedges.  C-Tapers have given me no feel but I love the feel of pitching with the Axioms.  I also hit a lot of full shots with my wedges so I am hoping the feel with the Axioms would be the same for both full shots and partial shots as well as around the green.

Did you just use the #10 shaft for your gap wedge? I’m wondering if I should do the 8i spinner for all of my wedges or should I just do the SW/ LW and use the #10 shaft in my GW 50 cut to length. I currently have 4-PW in the 105S Axiom and I am planning to install them into my wedges. Right now the plan is to use the #10 105S shaft and install that into my 50 degree sm10 then order the #8 105X shaft for my 54 & 58.

Open to other ideas, any feedback is appreciated
