Does anybody else play at a course where their major midweek comp gets totally ignored compared to the Saturday comps?

In terms of Gold Letter events?

Speaking as someone who is in their 40s and has a real job, midweek comps are mostly for retired people or trust fund kids. Saturday is when the working dads can play and most of the best players (aside from one trust fund kid) are working dads. The midweek SWAT/sweeps/comps at my club are littered with guys 65+ who don't really have the horsepower to be anywhere near the top quartile of players anymore.

A gold letter event is a special type of event that gets your name on the honour board, (In gold letters). Eg monthly medal, matchplay.

A lot of people young and old play the weekday competition. A lot of people work Saturdays, or have other commitments.

 

It's really irrelevant what age they are or skill level they have. It's the numbers involved. If the midweek competition has over 100 golfers, it qualifies for special events.

 

I can't help but think those in power who reject the idea, are those who play Saturdays/special events, and therefore don't care about those who can't.

 

1 committee member I spoke to even argued that people who work on the midweek comp day would get upset because they would miss out on those events.

I suggested that no event needs to be taken away from the Saturday competition calendar. Just create events of note to the weekday comp calendar.

You don't have to apologize, I've been called worse. I don't disagree what you stated above. I am just posting what I see at my club. You asked:

My answer: Yes, I do play at a course like that. All the "gold letter" events are Friday-Sunday, or Saturday-Sunday. I will leave the rest of my editorializing out of it.

Strange. Most of the young fathers at my club can only get out on a random Wednesday/Friday.

They are not able to play on the weekends due to work or wanting to be home with the wife/children.

I don't have a job that works like that, unfortunately.

Also, side note, I hear this kind of comment a lot, something along the lines of "I didn't play much golf when my kids were young, I just wanted to be with them" and it always seems to suggest that by me playing 9 holes once a week for 1.5 hours that I somehow don't want to be with my kids or something. Nevermind the fact that a lot of these same guys hunted, went on frequent business trips, went out drinking with their friends, went to NFL or College football games every weekend (without their kids) etc.....all things I don't do. It always makes me feel like I have to defend myself for some reason. Candidly, most of the guys that say this aren't very good at golf and I always wonder if it is their way of saying "if I prioritized golf over my kids like (I) you do then I would be better now." For the record, most of these guys play 4-5 times a week now and are still 20+ handicaps. MAN THAT WAS A LONG Digression. 

 

No one is asking but I don't even play in these "gold letter events" because I am not a + handicap and therefore have no chance at winning. I was just saying that all our gold letter events are on the weekends or Fridays.

Here at our club in Australia we have a Monthly Medal on the first Saturday of each month and Quarterly Medal on the first Wednesday of each quarter (so March/June/September/December). Board events (your Gold Letter) are usually on Saturday. No one seems to worry too much.
