Mizuno Pro 241 or 221 ?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone shipped and hit the 241's from Japan zenmarket? I just packed in my 20 year old 33's for the 221's. Heard nothing but good about the 221's one of the best recently. I like the look of 221's better than 241. Apparently they're smaller than 221 which is hard to believe. Mizuno is A1 in my opinion let me know what you think.

I had a similar situation as I had replaced my mp 37's with the 221's a couple years ago.

I recently hit the 241's, they are smaller, but fractionally so.  The feel is near identical, but the 241's felt a bit springier, but that could just be that the demos were brand new vs being hit 1000's of times.  Data showed that the 241's were 5 yds longer, but that could be a slight length and weight adjustment as their standard is 1/4" longer now and the weight is more focused behind the center.  1/4" length increase can lead to 2 yds increase by itself.  I think both are great and are rewarding with pure shots.  Miss hits aren't that punishing either, say 5-8 yds loss w/ 10mm mishits.

If you optimize your set up I doubt there is much difference when you compare them.  Going from mb to mb the changes are incremental.  I still like the looks of my mp37's the best with the chrome and sharper lines.

Irons don't get "less springy" after being hit 1000's of times.  Mizuno blade faces don't have a trampoline effect.  They don't reflex at all.  The added distance may be to another variable such as spin differential.

Mizuno standard length was increased by .25" six  years ago with the advent of the MP-18.  Since then the length has been consistent.

As pointed out above, this is not true.  They just switched the way they measure the clubs now to include the grip instead of them always posting their measurements without the grip.  The new MP line shows the measurement using the 60 degree measurement which measures to the end of the grip.  The Mizuno USA website shows this distinction as the JPX models from a year ago still show the lengths as they used to which is a 1/4 inch shorter than the 60 degree measurement used on the brand new models.  I took my JPX forged 6 iron and held it next to the new MP 243, they were the exact same finished length.

Yep, and however that measuring technique is communicated with the public, the fact of the matter is that the Mizuno standard iron length of today makes it thankfully the longest default steel iron length in the industry.  I remember playing MP's over a decade ago and had to order them +1/2".  Today I order them +1/4" because their change is more than the simple 1/8" grip cap inclusion Mizuno suggests.

...the new Mizuno standard is a strong quarter inch over the historic length.  I think this is wise.  The bulk of custom orders today are for over-length irons.  I don't know anyone who plays standard length in any iron.  Making the default iron length longer benefits more people who can shop off the rack.  Especially with the advent of some good shafts being placed in the irons at retail.  (S-Taper on some Cobras, KBS Tour on the new 241 and P7MC, Modus 120 on the 243, ZX7 etc... )

If the irons are too long and the season is in full swing, I'd rather tell a buddy to buy them, blow the grips off, and whack 1/4" off the length.  1-1.5 swingweight point isn't a big deal when custom order times are approaching a month in June.

Awesome insight!

i had to order my +.5" three years ago.

Are you saying that if i order my next Mizzy's +.5", they'll actually be .25" longer than my 221s?

Curious on your reasoning for not hitting the pro s3? I came from mp 18 mbs. I was dead set on the 241s but on a whim hit the pro s3 wow. They felt super soft , but not mushy. If your a blade guy I think it's worth a shot anyone who looks at those and thinks they are not a muscle back will need a strong argument.

Agree,  I hit the S3 and they were sex on a stick.   Waiting until the S1 heads come in to demo.  I was almost sold on refreshing my T150’s, not anymore.  The S3 could possibly the best iron for me in terms of look and feel.  Insanely good.

I know I just saw those drop and pulled the trigger on the s3 a couple of weeks back. I still have a set of mp 18 if I need a "pure blade" feel. The S1 look fantastic.

I still cant get an answer from any of my local fitters as to when the S1 heads will be in to test.  Not saying I’m going to go with them but would like to at least try them if not just hang them on my wall.   Lol.  The S3 was insanely good, wasn’t expecting anything just tried them and was wowed from the beginning.  I have to take a deep dive next apples to apples to look at my numbers but I have yet to demo a club that felt as nice as the S3.
