Major Winning Putters

Thanks for everyone's feedback and input.  Got some extra info on the Classic Golfers thread too.  Here is an extended and more accurate list going back to 77.  Colours added to help distinguish the most successful brands (with a special allowance made for 8802 and variations - which had a late hurrah with 3 out of 4 in 1995). Most interesting fact I learned is that Andy North won two US Opens in 78 and 84 with a pre-WWII putter.

ETA: I contacted Hal Sutton golf and the man himself replied to give me the 1983 PGA info!

“Shape” shouldn’t be confused with construction. Ping finally caught up. Maybe Theegala, Hovland, and Finau will put them back on the map one day. The PLD’s are no joke, IMO.

Obviously both headshape and construction are important.  And in terms of major wins in more recent years, I reckon paying players a lot of money helps too.

From Ping's perspective I think most people expected Oozthuizen and/or Westwood to win more than 0 majors from 2011 onwards. I agree that the three players you mention will contend in years to come and PLD is great. Mito Pereria was very close to putting the Anser back on the major wins list in the '22 PGA.

Great work. A thoroughly enjoyable memory test and read!

Full marks for tagging Faldo with a putter change in the 1989 Masters. Woosnam was the same a couple of years later, swapping out his Anser 2 for the Maxfli Tad Moore.

Thank you - took a while and plenty of input from WRXers to compile it all!

I didn't know about Woosnam's change.  Looks like he used the A2 in R1 then met Tad on the practice green before his second round 66?

Exactly so. The Anser 2 was in the bag for the first round, having been in play a few weeks earlier for his win in New Orleans.

He had a poor putting round on Thursday, reckoned the overly-light Ping was to blame on the fast Augusta greens, and swapped it out for the Tad Moore. The rest, as they say, is history.

Thanks for doing this, going through that list brought back some memories and a few "oh, that's right!" moments from me.  🙂   Also made me miss the "Nick Faldo's Equipment" thread.

Imagine changing putters, and not just that, going to a completely different style in the middle of a major championship.....and going on to win!  Can't imagine we'll see that too often any more.

This was a new one on me as I only remembered the final round - super-close contest with Watson (Ram Zebra) and Olazabal (Ping Zing) that year, and a few others too.  Plenty of drama on the 18th.  I amended the list at the top of this page.

Yeah, the mid-major switch resulting in a win is rare.  Oddly, it seems to have happened in three consecutive years - Faldo in 89 then Irwin in the 90 USO and Woosie in 91.  I have a feeling there must (or might...) have been more instances over the years? On the other hand, 99% of players who do it aren't close to winning because they're struggling on the greens.

Not a putter, but Justin Thomas put a new driver in the bag after the first round of the 1997 Open at Royal Troon, chasing a bit of extra distance.

Gary Player's faithful wand has always been an enigma. It's always described as 'unknown, black-painted, heel-shafted blade' or something similar.

Close-up photos are rare, and I'm not sure that I've ever seen one that shows anything other than blank metal daubed in black paint. No discernable stampings.

Lyle was using a weird mish mash bag of clubs in the Open in 1985. The first golf event I attended with my father as a 10 year-old.

Putter was a B60 IIRC.

Justin Leonard!  But yes, I remember that.  I was cheering on Jesper Parnevik that year (STX putter!) so was pretty disappointed when he faded on the back 9 just as Leonard was holing putt after putt...

Interesting - thanks.  I guess that means it's a putter with no name.

That's a great spot and you are 100% correct.  List amended again!  Looks like the B60 was used to win a total of 6 majors, from 81 to 04 - an underrated putter IMO.

Sutton's putter may be a Hogan Radial, as they did a model with a little tail and flange. But the search continues...

This very evening I got an email from Mr H Sutton himself who confirmed that the putter he won the PGA with was a Spalding HBA (he stopped using it not long afterwards). So, I can confidently add that one to the list...

Above is the Radial I was thinking of. So cool of Mr. Sutton to confirm that it's a Spalding. My knowledge is pretty limited when you back to further than the mid-late 1990s.

So with Woosie gaming the Anser 2 for round one of the Masters before switching to the Tad Moore, shouldn't we consider that a PING slam? or a 3.25 Slam?

I can't quite remember, did Sir Nick change to FootJoy shoes mid-Open in 1992? or where they on his tootsies from R1?

Haha - I like the 3.25 slam (and used to win all 4)...

I'll leave the major winning shoe list to your good self. 😉 I imagine FJ and Nike would be fighting that one out!

  • 4 months later...

I've got a couple suggested changes.

In 1977 Watson's Masters was a Ping A Blade.  His Open was the A Blade in the first round and either a 8802 or 8813 for the rest, he's mentioned both.

1982 Ray Floyd, there is some doubt that he used a Ping B60 at the PGA (Ping does claim that he did), the putter's certainly a butterfly style like the B60, but it has slots on the bottom that show thru on the face and is rumored to be a Ray Cook creation that had the clip on style training aide.

1996 PGA Mark Brooks was a Dual Force Rossie II.

1981 Bill Rogers is a Frank Johnston Caliente Special Dual Face Weight.

1996 Tom Lehman Taylor Made TPA II

1998 Lee Janzen Odyssey DF 550

1985 Bernhard Langer TP Mills #1

I've got a pretty complete list of all the majors back to 1940 if you'd like them.  It's taken me a VERY long time to gather it all.

Awesome list!

Did... did Tiger make Scotty Cameron cool?

Had never thought of it that way, but a pretty unremarkable number of wins before El Tigre.

Pretty much. Has there been a more recognisable and successful putter in golf than that one Scotty tiger used all those years?
