DG X7 in wedges

So I am really on the fence about what shafts the throw in my new wedges. I read the pinned comment above by Howard about matching flex in wedges. I play X100s in irons, and am thinking about going X7s in the wedges per his instructions to match flex throughout essentially but a little heavier. Although, the way I would do it is x7 7 iron in my pw, x7 8 iron in the rest (so ss1 in SW and ss2 in LW, per his suggestion) My only worry is coming from playing s400s does this seem like too drastic of a change? Should I maybe do a set with x100s first? Has anyone done this method with x7s? How did it work out? Would you do it again? I should finish I struggle with a floaty wedges. Partially technique, partially speed related. So just trying to find something to help.

You could try tipping X100's.

In my experience X7's are WAY stiffer than x100.   It's kinda crazy how stiff they are.  I had them in my irons too but had to switch out.

Right now I have nippon 2s14x in my 60 and 56, x7 in my 52 and pw and x100 in the rest of my irons.  The nippons are even heavier than the x7's although launch is about the same.  I think you will like the x7's in your wedges.  You will lose distance but who cares the short game is all about accuracy.

The X7 SS method works well, but as you get closer to the greens, you have to adjust to a very different feel. I struggled to do that.

I put SS X7s in my PW and GW. Love it for full shots. It was tougher with partial swings to trust the feel. Never really got used to it when I’d want to hit the 50-60 yard pitch (or less) with my GW. So I moved on to a tipped X100 in the GW, but still have the X7 in the PW. S400 in SW and LW, which get less than full swings (and a lot of greenside action) most of the time. Trial and error got me into this setup.

I played X100 in irons and X7's in wedges for a decade, until switching to "non steel" in everything 2 years ago.

Moving from S400 to X7 (8-iron shafts) was a boon for me. A "stock" wedge flew on a lower trajectory and landed with noticeably more spin.

I play where the wind blows more often than it doesn't. Flighting-down a wedge is imperative to good scoring. X7's in my 50, 55, & 60 allowed me to do that better than ever before. That's not to say you can't hit a high floater with X7. It's just a lower launch and flighted stock shot.

As Webb mentioned above, the feel between X7 and S400 was quite stark. The X7 will feel more harsh but you will still get plenty of feedback through the shaft. I consider myself a feel player and while it was a different feeel, the X7 worked extremely well for me.

If I were to switch back to X100 in my irons I'd have X7's in my wedges.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Only issue with this is it would require reaming, which I am not sure I want to do.

You should be able to tip up to 1/2" without reaming the heads. I have my SW X100 tipped 3/8", and it fit just fine.

Reaming a hosel is no big deal at all, it might sound scary but look at this, what we remove is next to dust
If we for some reason wants to use a taper tip shaft in that head later, add a brass shim

I play x7 in my irons and tried to throw one in a gap wedge. Made about 3 swings and had the butane torch out so fast it lit itself 🔥

switching shafts is not a solution to improve/lower ballflight, take a note from the countless tour players and play the s400 and call it a day

Thats very strange if that club was a full swing club, then you must hate it in the PW too, so this dont match up at all.

  • 3 weeks later...

So I’m considering the same as the OP, but where I’m a little different is that I’m playing X100 soft-stepped one time in my 4-9i (a feel thing). In my previous set, I was X100 SSx1 from 4-50°GW, which I’m understanding to mean I had an X100 8-iron shaft in my 9i, 46°, and 50°… then went to S400 in my SW and LW.

I’ve played the X100/S400 iron/wedge combo for a REALLY long time, so Dynamic Gold just feels right to me, but I’m happy to experiment a little with a slightly different set-up.

I’ve read through @Howard_Jones pinned 8-iron spinner post, and I’m about to order new wedges (46°, 50°, 55°, 61°) but I’m still a little unclear on my best options to try.

Since my iron set (built by Titleist new T100) is already soft-stepped once, would I put the X100 9i shaft (straight in) in my 46°, then potentially go soft-stepped (twice) X7 in 50°, 55°, and 61°?

Like my irons. they’d be built by Titleist, so reaming hosels to accommodate tip-trimming isn’t an option.

Thank you!

PS, thank you @Howard_Jones for all your contributions here over the years, your knowledge and expertise is a real asset to us all. Thank you!

OEMs has limited options here, but you have been playing X100 SS1 before as so my question is,what shafts was used for your PW and GW?

SS1 would naturally be a #9 using a #8 iron shaft, but its a open question what was used for PW and GW?

My "standard" suggestion for X100 SS1, would be using a #9 for PW (who makes it SS1 like the other irons), then move to DG X7 #7 shafts for GW, SW and LW, since tip trim is not a option from OEMs.

So you get to see the picture, if you played X100 strait in, and tip trim was a option, then the PW should use a #9, tip trimmed 3/8" (to avoid reaming), then X7 #8 iron shafts, for GW, SW and LW (butt cut only, no tip trim for GW, SW, and LW, neither in my suggestion for you, since we are "1 shaft softer or SS1" who is "full flex for YOU" included the GW.

I put X7 8i, 9i, 9i in my wedges this offseason just to try it. The performance is great on full swings but I'm not sure I'll ever get used to the feel around the greens. Performance on full swings is much improved over stock wedge/ S400, but around the greens X7 has no feel.

I moved to project X in my irons anyway, but if I ever played X100's in my irons again I would just play X100 9i shafts through to the lob wedge. I think matching wedge shafts to irons is the most foolproof way for me. I think it provides a balance of better full swing performance, while still maintaining the ability to "feel" the shaft load on partials. There will be a gradual soft-stepping as the wedges progress, instead of the massive drop off that comes from playing X100/S400 which seems to be the current "standard".

Why did you go as strong as X7 #9 iron shafts for SW and LW? thats "overkill", and why i suggest using the #8 for all 3 wedges on top.

I like your "standard" suggestion (thank you!), so I'll put the X100 #9 shaft in my Pw, and #7 X7's in my Gw, Sw, and Lw... which I guess, in a very basic sense, is X7 soft-stepped x2 in those 3 wedges.

Thanks again @Howard_Jones!

compared to full flex (SS1) is full flex for you, that means your iron set flex as SS1 goes all the way included GW, then the SW becomes SS1 and the LW SS2 "relative" to your irons.

Was done as an offseason experiment, am buying new wedges anyway.

Before I tried the "spinner trick" I had X100 9i in gap wedge, S200 sand and LW. Much preferred the X100 9i in the gap wedge over the X7, like I said I think the happy medium (for me at least) is just matching PW shaft and playing it straight in.

I've run out of my stockpile of the og spinners.  So I'm experimenting instead of pulling them from old wedges.  I'm a s300 iron player.

S400-love the weight and feel around the green, fell a bit soft and ballflight could be better on full shots.

X100 8 iron-better more controlled ballflight similiar to what I'm used to.  Feel a bit stiffer than the spinners (in between s400 and 8 iron x100) I'm used to, but not overly harsh.  This is what I'm going with for now.

If I wanted to continue,

I would try an x100 9iron straight in or tipped 3/8-1/2"

Due to the limited availability and difficulty of getting x7's. I'd ream the hosels and tip x100's further.  It's only a couple hundreths to tip them as much as you want.

When soled next to each other, the 8 iron x100 puts the first step where it would be if true temper continued the progression into wedge shafts.

I have X7 in a wedge set, and I think it makes an excellent around-the-green shaft. Straight in, no '8i trick,' it has plenty of feel for me on partial shots. But pairs best with a similarly stiff iron shaft in the 125g range, IME. I play them with either PX LS 6.5 or SPB X.

Currently have 3 x X7s on order for my wedges. Same as your setup, playing x100 SS1 so have gone with X7 7i shafts for 50, 54, 60, to effectively flow on from my soft stepped PW as '8-iron spinners'

Nice! @MP-93 Where were you able to source the 3 7i X7's? They seem to be harder to find than I thought they'd be. I want to build up a set in some older wedges to hit in a sim over the winter, while waiting for my fresh SM10's to be built.

I'd even reached out to @Peoples Golf through their website, but nobody's responded to me.

Please let me know :-)

Thanks!

I'm down in New Zealand mate, so not sure where I'm getting them from would help you ha. A guy who's active on a buy/sell page near me seems to hold a lot of stock but also orders from TT directly every couple of weeks. Don't see why any seller who stocks TT wouldn't be able to get in for you?
