Anyone struggle with the heavy swing weights on Vokey custom build?

I have some Vokey wedges that came in with crazy high swing weights. Part of this is my own dilemma because I play clubs +1" long. Is this just a Vokey thing? I've had Mizuno's that were far more reasonably SW'ed. My 58* around E2.

I've put in a lighter weight shaft and backweight with some grip end weights. I know that is just "tricking the scale" but would really like to get the SW down to about D6.

Just curious if others see this as the norm on OEM "custom builds" or if other mfg's are more conscious of SW. I am a huge Titleist fan etc. so this isn't a personal gripe, just want to get to reasonable SW's.

This is common for most OEM's.  Mizuno had lighter, AKA "B", weight heads for overlength builds for years.  They stopped at the T22 but I'm not sure about the current T24's.  Ping has some swingweight flexibility with their wedges that have the CTP (i.e. Glide but not Glide Pro).  Taylormade is a potential option.  Their wedges have a weight port at the bottom of the hosel.  They are a hit or miss when it comes to accommodating swingweight requests on custom builds.  You can however pull the heads, heat them up and remove the "bullet" weight.  The weights can range from a couple/few grams all the way up to around 16 grams.  Most that I have removed from various MG wedges have been 10+ grams.  You can sometimes find TM wedge heads  on the auction site without the weights installed.  You can tell when they list a lob wedge and note it with a gram weight of less than 300 for example.

I ordered Vokey SM9s through Club Champion in May 2022.  They came to me weighted at D6 with the S200 shafts, but those shafts sucked BADLY and I couldn't hit even a 3/4 swing shot w/o spinning it off the planet.  I put the Nippon 1150gh shafts I had at the time in my irons, and didn't bother to have those swing weighted...those were working great, but given how bad my elbows hurt from steel shafts, I swapped those to the Mitsubishi MMT 125TX when I changed those out in my irons a few months ago.

I actually think I'm going back to the Nippon 1150gh shafts in my Vokey wedges because I just don't have the feel I need in the MMTs.

Thanks, some helpful points. I figured I wasn’t going crazy and the OEMs are just cranking out the “custom builds” fast as possible.

Personal pet peeve - It’s a little annoying because of all the smoke EVERYONE blows about “go get fit.” Then you get your specs, custom order and receive a club that feels the same as a 9lb sledgehammer.

I get the other side though, these OEMs have many (thousands ?) builds per week. Can’t expect each of their builders to grind over the tediousness of SWs. They just say here is a ferrule, epoxy and how long to let it dry.

Bummer to hear that about Mizuno. Maybe I’ll take a chance with the T24’s and order a single wedge. If it SW’s crazy, maybe they’ve dropped the B heads. Will also have to look into TMades.

Would just prefer to keep gaming Vokeys, but can’t justify buying 3-4 wedges and no ability to get the SW down.

D6, was that at std length? If I recall the S200’s are light? Have heard the MMTs can be boards.

I am trying to work through myself a lighter shaft (moving from X100’s) in these wedges that will help bring SW down. I’m going to have to play shorter length too like it or not. Got Nippon Wedge shafts right now I’m trial running.

But did you specify your "spec'd" swingweight when you ordered?

No I ordered from Titleist And they don’t have a spot to specify that I saw. So that’s something I’ve thought about myself.

However let’s say their std length Vokey is supposed to SW at D4. Unless someone says they want a SW off that spec, it would make sense they hold to their specs.

At any rate I realize it’s mostly just wishful thinking on my part and an inconvenience of having to play well over length clubs.

D6 was at +1", as I'm 6'4" and needed the length.

Mine were spec'd as D6 and ordered straight from Titleist.  Club Champion checked and confirmed they were D6 and they were checked later on by Golf Galaxy at some point when I was trying to debate whether to pull the S200s and go w/ the 1150gh shafts (which I did for over a year...and will soon be doing again most likely).

Odd, since an S200 only weighs 3 gram lighter than an S300, 127 vs 130.  Spin rates should have been virtually identical.

The S200s were just WAY too flexible.  Their bend points were bad for my tempo on full swing wedge shots, and since even from the tips I end up with a lot of full swing 8-GW after my drives get me in range to attack pins, I need to get back to being able to hit those.  I'm much better with the long irons with the MMT125TXs than I was with the 1150gh stiff shafts regarding distance and side-to-side dispersion, but without a doubt, the feel on shorter shots is not there as much.  I also do not get as much spin on what should be stop and pop wedge shots as I was with the steel shafts.  I plan to use longer shafts tipped (AKA the spinner program) to the best of my ability here this weekend when I pull the MMTs from the Vokeys and go back to the steel shafts.  I might even do that tonight so they're ready for some simulator time this weekend when a polar cold front hits us here in Texas.

Is this the only option if I have 1 inch over standard Vokey?

Or is there another route for non vokey where I can land around D5 at plus 1 inch?

At +1" you are going to be hard pressed to get down to D5.  Options are a graphite shaft and save 20-30 grams or drill/grind the head.  You can fool the SW scale and use a back weight, but that also drives up the heft of the club.

FWIW, I have an older Vokey 60º at 36" and with a graphite shaft (~65 gr) and a midsize MCC Align (62 grams) it comes out to D5.  And I added a few strips of lead tape to get the weight up.
