Recoil SmacWrap 760 vs 780

Forged5

Recommended Posts

Had an iron fitting and the Recoil SmacWrap 760 F3 surprisingly came up on top.

Didn't feel light, except at transition it was super easy.

They did not have a 780 to try.

Im coming from the Modus 120 s. I know I know, that Recoil is way too light. I would have thought so too.

Question. Besides the 13 grams difference, is there any else?

Anyone try them both?

Thanks and FORE!!!

Here is my experience with Recoil ES Smacwrap shafts:

780 F3 will be a bit more linear and heavier feeling than the 760 F3. If you like the 760, but want a bit more stout/linear feeling than the 780 would be a great option.

I have a set of 760 F3 due to an elbow injury a year ago this month. I started playing again in late April of  2023 with these shafts and I am still playing these shafts as of today. These are great shafts.  I bought them since I knew it would be a pretty seamless transition with my swing limitations as I healed up. I have played 780 F4 for the past 3 years and will be going back to them when I heal up. But, I have considered the 780 F3 as a tweener option going forward. I play a round or go to the range with the 780 here and there, but I just do not have my strength back fully yet to commit them back into the bag. The difference for me is the 760 F3 can be whippy feeling vs the 780 F4. Which is no surprise with there spec differences. Both are great shafts, but I prefer the 780 vs 760 due to the more linear and stout feel.

This is just my 2 cents and experience this past year. As we know, experiences and results vary for everyone.

Good luck!!

You might recheck shaft weights.  My records show Nippon 120s is 114g, and UST's website shows Recoil 760 ES SmacWrap F3 is considerably lighter, a lot more than 13 grams.  I have the 780 F4 at 87g, and Nippon 130s at 124g

On the other hand the difference between the 780 and the 760 is about 14 grams. I switched from Modus 105 to the 780 shafts and found the transition to be fine. Not sure if you would notice the difference between the 760 and 780 shafts but I did.

  • 6 months later...

Tbh just threw an old callaway forged cf16 4iron with regular flex 760-F3 and my only complaint is that it’s made golf too easy.

I have decent speed and whatever, I think online I’m prob about a +7, on GHIN closer to +2, so yeah 190 club speed etc etc etc.

Joking aside, I’m a good player in my mid 30s and this shaft has turned my 4i into a bombster. Launches insanely hight and doesn’t really hook all too bad even givin its “way too flexy” internet reputation. Only downside is there’s <100rpm spin so hitting it into greens you gotta get creative (slice etc.).

tldr I’m the best internet golfer and this regular flex shaft on a 2015 callaway super game improvement has a pretty solidified spot in my bag.

What is it you like about a 'stouter' shaft? I ask bc I also am recovering from a damaged elbow (BTW, how is it for you? Healed yet? Was yours 'fixed', or did they just remove stuff, and file?), and have always played S-X until I hurt my arm. I dropped from 110-125grams in X-S to 80 grams in R. I just bought a set of irons with the 760 R Smac Wraps so am curious if you are unable to control the whippiness or what your reasons are for the desire to go more stout? Thanks.

Good luck with the elbow. My elbow has healed, but I am just careful and went from X to S shafts. I just did rehab/rest and lost about 5 months of a golf season after it happened. My current shaft weights are still the same as pre-injury, but just going down a flex helped me out.

The 760 are a great shaft and were good for me while recovering. The whippiness was not noticeable while my swing speed was down. I just had to learn to swing with them and not overpower these shafts as I was healing. They are smooth, but less weight/torque vs the 780 I was use to playing. My speed was down at the beginning so that was not an issue. But, as my speed increased I just had to keep a smooth swing vs going after them.  I just prefer a more linear/stouter shaft for timing/feel. When my swing speed was down these were a great fit. Very smooth and easy to hit for my injury set. But, as I healed I went back to the 780 Smacwrap and then into MMT iron shafts (MMT are more linear than the Smacwrap). I just found the 760 were not a good fit not me once I healed up for timing/feel. I played UST Recoil shafts for many years and would not hesitate to recommend or play a set with them in the future.

Good luck with your journey!
