4hy / 4i / 9wood

So where I play I am faced with a lot of 215-230 Par 3s as well as approaches into Par 5s. 5w carries 240-245 and can only cut off about 10 yards and control it. 7w cut .5” flies bout 230 in the air.

Have a 770 4i that is nice when it’s windy but I have no chance of stopping it on a green here in Nashville on these Bermuda greens during the summer. I just built a Qi 4hy with a Ventus 9x blue. The only issue is my standard deviation with it is all over the map. I go to hit a choke high skinny shot and because I hit down on it because it’s a hybrid I hit these trap nuked balls that’ll go 10 yards farther than I planned. Was curious to see if any scratch or better players have built a 9w or if they are happier with just going with the hybrid option?

I'd recommend the ZX utility as an option.  Plenty of height in it and it feels solid like an iron.  I cut mine to standard iron length and added some lead tape.

You could also try not to hit down as much on the hybrid.  I hit mine like a fairway wood, still down but ball further forward.

Had a titleist 500 and loved it off the tee but just doesn’t get it done off the deck.

anyone know if they still make like an old Adam’s DHY?

First let me preface this by saying I am NOT a scratch golfer but I have the same issue as you just 10-15 yds. closer.

Basically, as you know, the tradeoff is precision and spin vs. height. I never got along with a 7w, but am typically a low ball hitter. I like a more iron-like hybrid in that spot. Currently using a g400 hybrid because it's (a little) smaller although not the longest option out there. The last, great hybrid I had was an Ping i25. Small, very neutral, very little offset. Could probably pick up one cheap if you don't mind older tech.

Another option that fits between a 4-iron and a iron-like hybrid on the continuum is a G.I. 4 iron. That should get the ball up slightly more and provide a touch more forgiveness as a bonus without venturing into hybrid or wood territory.

Is this your first journey with a hybrid? I see you mentioned that you just built it. You're obviously a really good player, you might be able to bring in your dispersion over time and develop a few different shots where you are proficient (i.e. bullet trap and high fade that are 15-20 yards apart). There's a ton of pro's using hybrids so the club is capable if you put the time in.

I used to only be able hit hybrids and used to spin 5 woods 4.5-5K

However ever since fixing my swing this past season my 5wood has been the unicorn club for me. Hence the reason why I am leaning 9w since the 5wood has been such a game changer for me

Yes - there is a stealth model DHY (or the prior SIM model) which is basically identical. Sounds like a 4/5 head in that might be right up your alley

If you can find one, the GAPR Mid is a very similar head as well, with an adjustable hosel

How did I miss this launch???? I literally have the driving iron and it’s a rocket.

This with my LAgolf 4i shaft might be perfect.

Do you use a stats tracking package? This is such a tough spot in the bag because those clubs have a clear set of pros and cons vs each other and it's hard to tell which is the best overall.

If you play a few rounds with each and look at  the stats, the answer could become a lot clearer.

Well kinda I use 18 birdies. I have played 3 rounds this year and my par 5 avg is 4.4 but those specific holes I’ve made birdies have been 3/5 wood due to slow fairways or cold weather. In the summer they will be closer to 220-225

I'm not familiar with 18 birdies. Some of them like Arccos let you see your strokes gained per club, so you can directly compare 4i vs hybrid or whatever.

Update played again today. The best I can say about this 4 hybrid is that it’s just okay. Right now from range sessions and on course under pressure situations I really don’t know how to make it do what I need it to lol. Hit is from 225 and it just kinda ballooned on me on a stock shot went about 214 into a bit of a wind. And then had 217 and I choked down a good inch and tried to hit a high cut and it turned into a trap power fade and went 230.

9 wood is looking reaaaaaal good right now

Fwiw, a 9W might be more like your 5i/5H distance.  4i/4H replacement is a 7w for many players.  That may not be true for you, but I wouldn’t buy a 9W assuming that the yardage will match.

But in any case, shouldn’t you give the 4H more time?  There are trade offs in all of this; a 4 hybrid is NOT going to be more accurate than a well-struck 4i, but the 4H is MUCH easier to hit, much more forgiving, and much more versatile; a poorly struck 4h is going to be better than a poorly struck 4i.  And the advantage of a 9W or 7w is elevation and holding greens, but again, there is typically some loss of accuracy.

So the DHY will be here a lot sooner than anticipated, will try and throw some numbers up this week before selling the 4hy. I think the jumper is scaring me the most about this club. Like I can’t try and hit a high 5-10 yd fade and it come out piercing and fly 15 yards farther than expected (yes it’s the standard not the tour model)

I think a shortened 7w could be a good idea. At your speed, 9w might give you more height than you really need. 7w gives you enough height (comparable to 4H) and if you can shorten it, you’ll have a nicer gap with your 5w while gaining the forgiveness of the clubhead and the ease of using a shorter club.

How much do you think I should shorten it? .5” wasn’t enough

so you think 1”?

When you said “cut”, I thought you were talking about a shot shape - my bad. I’m not sure what the right amount is but you could always try choking down and using lead tape at the range until it feels right. My feeling is that the 7w head is enough loft but you’d want to play around with club length to get a desired distance. A 20.5 degree 7w should give you comparable height to a 22 degree 4H.
