Nova Scotia advice (NOT CABOT)

Looking for recommendations... My wife and I are planning a week long road trip through Nova Scotia in mid/late September this year. We’ve done something similar the last few years with trips to Oregon, California, BC, Michigan, and Colorado. We like to free-wheel it a bit with loose plans and move between cities/towns. Good beer/wine and food are our other interests. We’ll likely play golf every day,,, like to mix in a few hidden gems and splurge once or twice on nicer courses. Never spent any time in this area, so don’t have much intel except basic research to this point.  I know most who visit are likely just interested in the Cabot experience.  We may go there for a day, but no plans to stay at the resort and play there for multiple days.  Thanks in advance.

Highland Links, a classic Stanley Thompson course (look him up).

Operated by the Gov’t, conditions are average, but for many years #1 in Canada before Cabot and others came along.  Currently #8 in Canada.   
 

Also on Cape Breton, Le Portage in Cheticamp.  Very Good.  
 

Links at Brunello , Halifax.   A good test.  
 

Haven’t played this one, but outstanding reports by several friends who have:  
Northumberland Links, Pugwash, very good course, stellar views of the Northumberland Strait.

You’re close, you might consider venturing into Prince Edward Island with many great courses.

In the Halifax area, my favorite Public courses are Links at Brunello, Grandview, and Hartlen Point (right on the Ocean).

 

In the Valley, there is Ken-Wo, and Avon Valley.

 

Fox Habour Resort is on the Top 100 courses list for Canada, but I haven't made it there yet. And not far from there is Northumberland Links.

 

And in Cape Breton you have Cabot Cliffs, Cabot Links, and Highland Links.

 

Digby Pines is a sleeper that a lot of local Golfers love also.

 

Agree with @st1800e for sure, that there are some incredible courses in PEI. And it's a pretty short drive there if you have time to get some in there as well.

Depending on where you will be in Nova Scotia, it is approximately a 9 hour drive from one end to the other.  If you are mainly in the Halifax area, then I suggest a trip to Chester, it is a really fun course and you can stop at Peggy's Cove along the way.  In Halifax, My first choice would be Hartlen Point, it is a military course but open to the public.  Many people like The Links at Brunello but personally I think it is over priced and I think they ruined it wilh the number of houses they stacked into the property.  Avon Valley is a fun course and normally in good condition.  Ken-wo in New Minas is one of my favourite courses.  Truro Golf Club is an easy walk and a fun course to play.  I play out of The Links at Penn Hills.  It is about 40 minutes from downtown Halifax.  It can be hit and miss on conditions though.  Then you have Antigonish, and Abercrombie as you head east from Halifax.  If you are going to Cape Breton, then I would strongly recommend The Lakes at Ben Eion, as well as Bell Bay and Le Portage.
