Hip movement in takeaway

It seems to be an article of faith in many quarters that the hips should not begin to move until the club reaches parallel in the backswing.  This would look something like this:

To me this does not look much like this:

We are told by Golftec that pros have 25-30 degrees of turn at this point while the rest of us have 15.

I saw a X post that said the golf should accelerate faster than the hips, but was not sure if they meant angular acceleration and if so they meant increase in orbital angular velocity or spin angular velocity.  In other words this higher club head acceleration could be simply due to the club head changing its angle at the hands which can happen even if you start the hands and hips and arms and shoulders moving at exactly the same time.

In other words, I am not at present buying the concept of it being a swing killer to start the backswing with the hips.  The idea may be doing people more harm than good.

I always thought was the other way around.  Most Ams rip there hips open too much and too early in the backswing.  Also most Ams have more hip turn back than most pros, so they have further to go to get back to square and then open.  Basically most Ams are doing a lot more with their hips than the pros.

Read the article. It doesn’t say anything about the hips not beginning to move until the club reaches parallel in the backswing.

Best just leave it alone.

It's definitely a swing-killer for me, and for the reasons given in the article.

Any idea can do more harm than good if it isn't pertinent to someone and their swing. For someone who can turn his hips too much and too quickly, and who then often gets stuck on his trail foot, this concept and article is very appropriate.

When one's hips start turning and how far they turn right, depends on each person's physique.

Using the Tiger image, my hips are turning similar to his in the 2nd image from left.  Maybe some of the difference is my wide shoulders, down, are more stout, so the turn doesn't "feel" as pronounced as Tigers appear.

I think you're missing the main point of the article which is the clubhead moves first to get everything in sequence.  The photos are for illustration purposes.  It's a general guideline which is usually the case in a lot of instruction articles.  It's similar to seeing tour pro's are 4.3* down with 7 iron.  If you are at 3 or 5 that's probably fine..you just don't want to be at 1* or 8* down.

If you segment the components starting back, you'll be out of balance and out of sync.

Same thing in the downswing, all the parts work together synergistically. Don't fire the arms, don't cast and don't try to get the left hip out of the way.

Hit it off the right hip.

I think the problem is that different feelings work for different people.  Even the same swing thought or feeling which seems to work well one day can stop working on another day.

It’s the old adage of feel vs real.  You have to be able to relate swing feelings or thoughts to the results they produce compared to what you are trying to achieve or work on.  I think it’s why so many good golfers regularly check their form on camera these days.  But of course to make that work you need to have a good idea what you’re looking for and for your own swing tendencies as well as cause and effect.

Its why it is such a difficult game to get very good at for most people and why we can be great one month and terrible the next when all that seemed to work before no longer works and we get frustrated.

I am now using a gravity fit pro to try and fix my restrictions in my pivot following a few surgeries last year which made my body seize up.

I definitely feel that solving restrictions in your body becomes more and more important for golf as you get older.

Yeah your own feel on your hips is everything. Me left leg is shorter, it effects how each side feels.

It's tough to get the feels and shift correctly when legs are different lengths.  My right leg is 1" shorter then the left. Also 2 titanium hips makes them hard to feel.  Tough to get weight forward when it's uphill!

I improved my sequence by having my hips move naturally, as a reaction to what my arms are doing, rather than intentionally moving them. From Monte’s NTC video.
