Having said all that, as a 52-year-old with a slowish swing speed, I am a fan of the HALO irons.  I have a set of the regular Cleveland Launcher XL irons in DW-6i and bought a 5i and 4i with graphite shafts in the HALO model. They make a world of difference to me.

Yeah definitely, he doesn’t need a full set. The set makeup you’re talking about should be about what he needs.

Mine is 86 and until 84 was going pretty strong and was always athletic but ….. suddenly some nagging back/hip issues have intervened more than ever and he’s frustrated he can’t play like he could at even age 80-84. Down to just 9 when I can get there to play, but looking forward to this season!

Just had to comment on the new (or maybe previously used) profile picture. That same magazine is on the magazine rack in the man cave. Along with a couple college football issues from the mid 90’s (you know which team😀), a couple of Larry Bird and Celtic magazines, and a couple Dodger ones.

I don't have many old magazines, but same here, a very few with some key articles about favorite players, a Des Moines Register Peach section or two, and yep, Jack and Larry among them.  And you also know which college team, haha!  There is still a cover ripped off the SI from Tiger's first Masters that my oldest daughter found a couple years later and decided to separate from the magazine and tape up on an unfinished wall in the basement, haha.  As an homage, after we finished off most of the basement we taped it up in the storage room at her age 7 eye level - it's still there!

Cobra T Rail hybrid irons.  They are 5 and 6 degree gaps standard.  Standard lightweight Recoil shafts.  Excellent hybrid irons! 

 

I'm a 68 year old, single digit cap and play the 7 to SW. Shot a 72  two days ago with them.  33 on the front! (Direct brag!)

Depends on budget, but no need for a full set (14 clubs). Maybe go with driver, 9 wood, 6/7 hybrid chipper and a wedge? Brands and models

all are lightweight and help launch the Ball for more carry

Just get him into this forum.  he'll be smacking it 270 down the middle in no time as it is all about the toys we have and this place is like having local knowledge.

Take a serious look at the reviews of the Eleven hybrid irons. The cool thing is that you can buy them individually, so much lower cost than typical iron sets.

I endorse a variation of the above - a high lofted driver (maybe a mini driver at 14* or 15*), 5-wood, 5-hybrid, 7-hybrid or 7-iron, 9-iron, SW, Putter.  But he may not do will with ladies shafts, they may be too light for him.  So that part might require some trial and error.  I'm 71 with a 12* driver, 5-wood, 5, 6 and 7-hybrids, 9-iron, PW, SW and putter.  I hope that I can play if I get to 80; my back is becoming a problem.

I am playing TSR1 with regular shafts at regular weights (58 gram driver, 75 gram hybrids, 95 gram iron shafts).

I'm 71 and after some trackman time, I've filled my 2024 bag with 12 deg driver, 7 wood, 5 hybrid, 7-9-PW-SW and putter. Woods are all senior graphite, irons are regular flex steel. Hope to get out for my first round of 2024 next week.
