Just Another WITB

Of all the gear sicko/true WRX’er aspects of this board, one of my favorites has been looking through the detailed user-submitted WITB, so here’s mine:

 

 

 

DRIVER: Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond 10.5* (DS) w/ Fujikura Ventus TR Blue 6S @ 45”.  In a short period of time, this driver has been a revelation. I’ve never played a 10.5* head but having more loft and moving the heavier weight to the back has brought up launch (carry) and kept spin down. *Chef’s Kiss*

 

 

3 WOOD: Titleist TSR2+ 13* (D-3) w/ Mitsubishi Tensei 1K Black 65S. A club used almost exclusively off the tee when I want to eliminate the right miss. Probably a stupid reason to have this club, but I love hitting it and it’s exactly what you’d expect: an oversized 3 wood low-launch low-spin missile machine. It looks right to my eye and on my home course I have specific holes where it works quite well.

 

 

5 WOOD/WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT: Callaway Apex UW 17* w/ Project X HZRDUS Smoke RDX Black 70S. Again, in my avoidance of fairway woods off the deck and after not getting along with any hybrids I’ve tested, decided to try out the UW in my 5 wood spot and my goodness… What a fun club to hit and it serves a purpose that I needed in this spot in the bag. The shape and look at address is perfect, very neutral and workable. Love the shorter shaft and the penetrating ball flight. I look forward to situations on the course where I have to play this club. I do intend to experiment with some higher launching shafts.

 

 

4 IRON: Nike Vapor Fly Pro bent to 20* w/ Fujikura Pro 95i AKA The Koepka Clone. Funny story: a few years ago this was an impulse eBay purchase (much less $ than these clubs go for now) I have no business playing this club but I now completely understand why Brooks and Finau still have it in the bag. Awesome awesome club and my go-to fairway finder off the tee. My favorite club in the bag.

 

 

5 IRON - PW: Ping i230 (power spec, blue dot) w/ Project X IO 6.0. Remarkably consistent irons and forgiving for the package. The offset doesn’t bother me, though I wish they looked more like the Blueprint S at address. Bottom line, they just work, and the fitting process revealed the IO shafts were an ideal match. These are great irons if you miss it low on the face or off the heel (which I do.)

 

 

GAP WEDGE - Ping Glide 4.0 50* (all stock off the rack). Put this club in the bag when I played PING i500 irons because the UW in the set didn’t spin nearly enough. This looks nice at address, spins the right amount, and I use it for pitch shots and bump-n-runs quite a bit.

 

 

SAND WEDGE/LOB WEDGE: Bettinardi HLX 5.0 Oil-Rubbed Bronze PVD 54* and 58* RJ12 w/ KBS Hi-Rev 2.0 Black. I’ll be honest, I’ve never done a wedge fitting and I probably should. These were bought on a whim because they look insanely cool and Bettinardi made an extremely soft-feeling milled wedge that really stands out in the bag. Not crazy about the sole compared to my Vokey SM8 D grind wedges but you know what? I don’t care because I feel great pulling these out of the bag, even if I’m blading it over the green.

 

 

PUTTER: Brandon Matthew Custom Truxton Wide-Blade Carbon Patina 34” 360g w/ single bend shaft. I have been in full blown putter exploration and collecting mode in recent years, and realized that I prefer to game a wide Anser 2 style head with no offset and low toe-hang. After fawning over the many boutique/custom shop companies, I came across Brandon Matthew’s work on instagram and it checked every box I was looking for. The raw carbon patina look is awesome, the stamping options, the smooth face, milled bullet sole and milling on the bumpers, I love having exactly what I want and a true 1/1 unique putter. The red Iomic grip feels like home.

Awesome WITB! Nothing wrong with having a 3 wood as a tee ball only club. I rarely hit a fairway wood from the fairway so I have recently added a mini driver to the bag and it has proven to be a great move. 

 

That putter is awesome, definitely going to check him out!

Yea I agree with Ben. If you have a home course that the majority of your rounds are played at, then by all means, if there is a consistent scenario/specific shot you face every round, find a club to deal with it. That’s a great choice for a 3wood as well. Solid looking bag!

Love the putter.  I've had a truxon in the bag for the last year, raw carbon as well

There are so many companies doing cool headcovers and just accessories in general. Definitely a slippery slope when you start collecting em but they just give me a good feeling taking em out of the bag and that in and of itself is worth it!

Cleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeean! Been wanting to get one of those Nike DIs in the bag for awhile but my GAPR Lo just keeps finding it's way back in.

Upgraded the Callaway UW shaft to a Ventus TR Red 7S. Stiffer handle section with higher launch is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Best wood I’ve ever hit off the deck.

Interesting that you like the i230 for their performance on thin strikes. I tend to miss high on the face and no other irons (which I tested) keeps its trajectory and spin on those like i230 does.

 

I also have them in IO 6.0 and absolutely love that shaft. Came from „normal“ PX in 5.5, which I used for ~12 years

i230 really impressed me and its interesting that they perform so well on a variety of misses considering the size of the iron. A big thing for me was flyer avoidance and maintaining spin. Big big fan of these irons, and I’m glad I’m not the only one who found the PX IO shafts to be the ideal match!
