Anyone watching this? First 2 episodes out on FX/Hulu. Phenomenal so far. 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. May be the next Game of Thrones.

Yup. Just like the old days. I actually prefer the weekly drop. Gives you something to look forward to and more time to talk and think about it. Worked pretty well for GOT for 7 seasons.

We watched the first two Saturday night. 

 

Read the book many years ago so already know the story ... but good gosh, the production and acting is incredible.

I have gotten spoiled to on demand TV and cannot stand having to wait week after week anymore. My wife and I spend a few hours most evenings watching TV, so we have a tendency to binge watch shows. We watched the first episode of the newest season of True Detective, and havent watched it again because I'm waiting for the rest of the season to be available, lol. 

 

I'm not sure how my wife would like this show, but I might give it a shot.

FWIW my wife absolutely loved the book and loves the show so far. If your wife doesn't like it, that would put her in a distinct minority - 99% RT score.

Don't want to prejudice you at all about True Detective as I posted about it in another TV thread. The best I can say is that, unlike many reviewers, we didn't actually hate it.

Just saw the first episode and beginning of the second 

 

The second episode starts with the current ruler dying, and he mentions the previous war in Korea

 

So, now I understand the timeframe of the setting

 

If youre into this, the Netflix series I mentioned above provides a great deal of context into the history of the development of the original samurai lords, how they came to dominate and take power from the Imperial  ruler, during a time when just a handful controlled huge geographies and fought enormous battles. Even attempting to invade Korea and China!

Episode 3 was incredible. Action scenes were great. Alliances and intrigue becoming a little more clear.

I watched the first two episodes and really liked it. Finishing up Frontier with Aquaman tonight, and then start back on Shogun and whatever else. Always liked the actor Hiroyuki Sanada. Going back to The Last Samurai.

Sanada is excellent. Interestingly I think Cosmo Jarvis as the Englishman is the only weak bit of casting. He's not bad but I keep picturing Jon Snow instead!

I tried to start Shogun last night, but when I pulled it up, only episode 3 was available to watch. I also tried Silo, and while most of season 1 was there, episode 1 was missing. I cant watch a show and not see episode 1, lol. 

 

We started The Night Of. We have watched 2 episodes, and I imagine we will finish it this weekend. So far, it is turning out to be a good show. I have a bad habit of picking shows that look interesting from the description but turn out to be terrible. My wife told me last night "I think you might have somewhat redeemed yourself with this show" lol. It has become a running joke in our house. I pick a show, halfway through episode 1 we turn it off and I give her the remote.

Shogun is streaming on Hulu. Should be able to get all the episodes there. IIRC Night Of was well worth finishing

Yeah, one has to navigate to the 'Seasons' menu to select the individual episodes. The main Hulu splash page with play the latest episode.

I typically like this genre, but I couldn’t finish the first episode due to sub titles.  This is totally a me thing, but I get super distracted trying to watch and read.  If I knew they were gone in subsequent episodes, I woukd fight through.

Unless you speak Japanese I'm afraid you're stuck with them. FWIW my wife wants closed captioning on EVERYTHING!

I watch everything with captions. The hearing loss is bad enough, but most movies and TV shows these days have way too much going on sonically to make out the dialog. 

 

Watching foreign movies/shows dubbed in English brings back bad memories of watching Japanese monster movies from the 60s and 70s. I watch a ton of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese shows, not to mention plenty of European movies in Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish, German, and French.

Not that I want to draw comparisons, but I can't be the only one that watched the 1980 miniseries, right?  I seem to recall that was one of the first shows our family recorded on our VCR.  LOL.  My mom is itching to watch this series, but she's waiting until all the episodes have come out.
