Who else has all but stopped buying Hoing?

15 years ago I was going through clubs on a weekly basis. Today, I might buy 1 golf club every 1-2 years. I bought a tour W 52 for $10 the other day.  I was looking at my bag and realized I've had my g400 max for like 6 or 7 seasons now. It has not even crossed my mind to buy a new one. I play 10 or less rounds a year and have more fun now than ever on the course. Who else has all but stopped buying clubs?

I'll say I'm trying to start stopping (ha) this season.  My ball striking consistency is crap with all the club changing and I want to actually get used to a full set of clubs again. I was a pretty good iron player in my youth and just haven't been for a few years now.  I'm sure I'll tinker with backup clubs but I want my gamers to be set for a couple years for a change

I never really did.   I'm 44 and on my 3rd set of irons in 31 years.   I'll replace wedges because they wear.  I'll generally have a new driver because of hookups so why not.    Once I'm fit and dialed in,  changing clubs is more a chore than a joy.

I stopped buying new clubs, if I want to try something out I’ll buy used, or reshaft them.  Driver being the exception, and that only after a fitting and playing a couple rounds with a demo.  And then only if I see a noticeable improvement from my current driver.

A LAB putter might be a future exception.  😉

I've hoed quite a bit but more out of passion/curiosity than searching. Thing I found was I played best with clubs I put through a lot of rounds and reps. Clubs are like dating, need the spark to pursue and see it through, maybe it goes to love at least for a time, but idea of switching out every season or interchanging gear often has never worked for me.

Interesting topic.
I love new stuff. I love watching TXG reviews on new stuff. I am all for using whatever new technology is out there to lower scores. But…… lately bag consistency seems to be what I’m leaning towards once certain parts of the bag get dialed. Don’t get me wrong, the new Mizzy 245’s are lovely but I’ve had almost a full winter SIM season with Wilson Staff D9 Forged in the bag and am pleased with their ball flight. Really pleased. I’ll have to adjust come green grass season I’m sure but I’m loving the confidence in my iron game. Changing would get me to iron ground zero again.
I’ve set lofty goals for my game this season and gear ho-ing will not get me to where I wanna get to. I’ll watch every TXG vid that lands on You Tube but will work hard to keep things consistent this year.

I'm at the point where I have a really good idea of what works for my game. I don't have to experiment a lot anymore. At this point the gains in performance are pretty small for something that is a good fit for my game. On top of that, it can take 6-12 months for me to get a club fully dialed in where I know how it will perform on the course.

Can't deny the attraction of shiny new things though. Having something new in the bag to start the season is the best. A club that has committed no sins and has unlimited potential haha.

I got rid of almost almost all my extra golf clubs during the covid golf boom.  I realized constantly trying out new clubs was only hurting my game.  The ridiculous prices made reducing  hoing an easy decision. I'll experiment a bit in the winter, but once golf season starts, the bag is set for the year.

Unfortunately with the plunging  used prices , I once again bought and sold a lot of  clubs in the last year.  But, if I can't resell a club for  what I paid I won t buy it anymore. The only thing lately I lost money was a demo Aerojet LS 3w, that was new in plastic and 1/2 price.

Bag Setup - changes too often to bother listing

For me, I just need to be in the most recent for the most part Ping G iron, with the right shaft (have went stiffer and heavier as well, after years of thinking I needed lighter and softer at 59), but in my wedges, it's all old stuff, i25's (U, S, L), and OG Glide 60 ES. Also in my 3 wood, it's old as well, after years of ho'ing, in the TM OG M2 15 degree, 65gram stock. Rest of the bag is also pretty set, with G425 5 Wood and 4 Hybrid, and G430 7 Wood. Mainly my mania now is down to driver, but only 2, the PING G430 LST or Max 10k, ---- and putters. I am just in love with putters, and I really need to reduce that stable, as that is the club that really should change the least. Still a decent putter, but could be so much better if I did not change.

I had a good run going but elbow tendonitis and getting older forced a need for graphite shafts in my irons and wedges a few years ago.  That triggered the inner ho, lol.  I'm just about done, everything in my bag works well for me including driver.

With that said Tour Edge Exotics has a new forged and milled iron called the 723 Pro and I really think I could rock them with a Recoil shaft.  Maybe the price will come down in a year or so.  One thing I don't do anymore is pay full price on clubs, they lose value so quickly that waiting a year pays off nicely.

Mostly Wishon with a few Tour Edge Exotics, Cobra, Cleveland, and one Odyssey mixed in.

I have definitely tapered off my NEW club purchases the last 2 -3 years. The prices have almost double on drivers from when I bought more first brand name drive the Ping G30SFT. Believe it was $369.00. I may buy 1 or 2 brand new clubs every year. Usually a driver.

Have also learned that my game doesn't really improve by constantly switching clubs. Had my best year recently when I didn't tinker with the bag...but when winter arrives I start looking for deals on eBay. I have access to a simulator so I buy & try in the off season. Around May every year I take to the club & try what worked well in the simulator. If it doesn't perform I sell it.

If I were going to buy golf clubs annually, it would be purely on the basis of how I liked the looks.... LOL. 😄

Man it all depends for me. Irons I keep for a really long time historically. Due to the fact it takes lots of reps to get used to an iron set for me. Wedges I swap out every other year. Putter rarely ever changes unless it needs a timeout for a round or two. Woods specifically 3 wood can be a revolving door or when I find something it’s in the bag for 5-7 years.

Driver I’m always chasing accuracy and decent distance. Feels like you can always improve on the driver.

7 wood is somewhere between the two for me.

Fully retired at the end of February.  I cleared out all of my trials and extras.  So, my bag is set for at least 2024.  I kept 3 iron sets (game enjoyment, cavity filled and blades) to satisfy my different moods.  But, I’m sticking with the new driver, last years fairway and hybrid.  If I make any changes at all, it may be a putter.

With all the new plateau of pricing, it would have to be a miracle club to get me to try it.  I’m also finding I’m at the age where there is little difference in performance at a given loft among all iron types, so why get on the merry go round again?

I have slowed down. My driver and 3 wood are the only clubs in my bag not 5 years old.  I test clubs and resell usually once a year.  I only play about 20-25 rounds with about half being a 9 hole work league.  I hover around 7/8 HC.  I think new equipment is fun but for my skill set it’s rare when something new performs noticeably better.  My switch is usually just had the club a while and want something different to look at. I can’t remember a time when I hit a club and was like wow that club is so much better and wanted to buy.

I’ve been playing the same exact clubs going on 4yrs now, minus a little putter rotation. That being said, I just yesterday purchased my first iron set since then, as a test of something new. They’ve really gotta wow me to change, otherwise I’m returning them.

One way that I’ve found to combat the ho’ing itch is to go back and reread all the positive reviews of the clubs you’re already gaming, get those ideas back in your head and you’ll soon be swooning over your current set all over again, ymmv…..

One last thing I forgot to add, I am a sucker for buying identical backup clubs, so I do have that problem going for me. I’m not completely banned yet, am I???? Hahaha
